In the continuing story of "genius" Elon Musk taking over Twitter and then possibly fucking up entirely, apparently you have to give at least 60 days notice of mass layoffs by federal and state law in California, and shockingly enough, Musk didn't do that when he bought to company and planned to start mass layoffs within a week.
Link to a non pay-walled version of the story at Archive.org.
I've been saying for 15 years that Elon Musk is an idiot.
It wrinkles my brain that Jupiter’s moon Europa has oceans that are sixty miles deep, while Earth’s oceans only reach seven miles deep at most. I’m willing to bet good money that there’s life in Europa’s oceans. Like five bucks. You hear me, NASA? I bet you five bucks that there’s life on Europa… Now that there’s money and reputation on the line, I bet they send a mission there real quick.
I have no idea when this was originally posted, but NASA is working on their Europa mission RIGHT NOW to look for alien life! But get this, they theorize that because of the depth, gravity, and composition of the oceans, any organisms that lived there would be waaay bigger than aquatic life on Earth. So far everything’s going well with regards to their Europa mission so they should have a spacecraft on its way to look for giant sea monsters in space in only a few years. (The planned date is in the early 2020s.)
Looks like my negotiations worked. You’re welcome, humanity.
I’ve never been gripped with such cold terror and pure delight in my LIFE
explaining to an 18th century sailor that we’re looking for sea monsters in space.
The launch date for the Europa Clipper is October 2024.

Something I randomly think about a lot is how when very old castles, manors, and large country estates were built, they were built with the expectation of guests. In eras when you rarely travelled over a hundred miles from home, when one did travel guests stayed for long periods of time with friends and relatives. Wealthy people would have guests in their home frequently (virtually all the time, if you were royalty), so huge houses (and staffs) accommodated for multiple guests on long stays. More homes were multi-generational, too.
And now when people live in big houses it’s usually just themselves. Maybe 4-6 in a family, and when the kids get married and move away? Maybe only 1 or two. Guests rarely “sleep over,” and almost never longer than a weekend. I don’t know exactly what caused the cultural shift, but it fascinates me.
Every time I read an old book and some young person “visits a friend in the countryside” for weeks or months I get emotional. Imagine if your friends had the resources to host you at their house for that long. And you would live there very like if it was your own home. Nowadays even if you do stay with friends or family, there’s usually events or activities intended to fill the time. Suppose if you just went to visit your friend for a month, and the two of you just read books or took walks together.
That's why I no longer envy the rich their mansions. I mean what am I going to do with all that house? Realistically who needs 12 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms? As it is my family who lives a half hour away never comes to visit me as it is. Am I supposed to let the staff live in all those rooms? Seriously, what's it all for? Give me a three room place in a really good neighborhood anytime.

Radfems' syllogism: Labor is coercive when people must work to survive. Coerced sex is rape. Therefore, sex work is rape.
Here's what's wrong with that.
The coercion in "labor is coercive" and the coercion in "coerced sex is rape" aren't referring to the same thing. There's a difference between feeling indirectly "coerced" to work to survive and being directly coerced into an act of labor. (Otherwise, "coerced labor," as in indentured servitude, wouldn't be a distinct issue, just a tautology for all labor.)
Sexual coercion occurs when something you're already entitled to - privacy, physical safety, a grade you've earned, a job position you've earned - is directly withheld until you agrees to a sexual favor. This can't be fair consent. Nobody has the right to threaten you like this.
A very different matter is a sexual transaction - exchanging sex for something you're not already entitled to. I'm not entitled to hundreds of dollars from any man in particular. But we agree that he gets sex he otherwise would not receive, and I get money I otherwise would not receive. Where is the violation of consent there?
“You never pretended to be a bride when you were a little girl?” No???? Like literally never?

I played with science sets, made mansions with leggos and dreamed of living on the 83rd floor of a penthouse apt. in Manhattan.
I was talking about being afraid of people leaving me behind because I'm too sick, and my boyfriend just looked at me and said: "It's my choice to be your boyfriend. It's your friends choice to be your friends. You don't have to understand it, but you have to respect our choice. Don't try to make the decision of whether you're worthy of people on their behalf because that's not your decision to make." I think that's an important thing to remember. That whether we're worthy of someone's time and effort is something others can decide for themselves regardless of whether or not we agree with them. There's a lot of peace in realizing that literally all you have to do is accept the love other people choose to throw your way. That you aren't the one who gets to determine that you aren't worthy of their love. That other people can choose to love you regardless of how you feel about yourself - and that you can learn to respect their choice even though you're feeling unworthy.
It's also a matter of respect. You have to respect other people's decisions, even their decision to love you.
i think the inherent purpose of humans was just. to have fun. literally what are we doing

Holy shit.
In the fourth grade, we had to pick an inventor, dress like the inventor, and explain our invention. I decided to pick something off the wall (instead of, like, a light bulb), so I ended up doing my little presentation as George Crum. I remember reading about his work as a chef, learning about his shortness with customers, and the interaction (possibly apocryphal, although Crum certainly invented the potato chip) with the diner who kept complaining about his home fries being too thick.
I literally made a presentation as this man, and used a few websites and a couple encyclopediae (yeah, I’m old) to source all the data. I certainly know more than most people do about George Crum.
The point of all this is that, until I came across this post on Tumblr, I had absolutely no idea he was black. I’ve known who Crum was for over twenty years and never knew his race, because no website or encyclopedia thought it was worth mentioning.
Erasure is a fucking disease.
Wait @aurric if you had to dress like him for the presentation, wouldn’t you have had to look up a picture reference? How would you not know he was black?
It was 1995. I found encyclopedia articles and some old websites that referenced him as a chef, but never as a Black or Native man.
I dressed up like a chef.
I lived 49 years before I discovered Alexander Dumas (author of the Three Musketeers, the Man in the Iron Mask, and the Count of Monte Cristo) was black.
I'm 57 yrs. old and TIL that the inventor of the potato chip was a black chef.
if you’re famous in your imagination, you’re famous period. if you’re the most beautiful person ever in your imagination, you’re the most beautiful person ever period. if you’re rich in your imagination, you’re rich period. why? because your inner self (who you are in imagination) is your true self. stop identifying with the outer world, stop being enslaved by the world of the senses, and start identifying yourself with your inner self. who you are in imagination will project itself unto the outer world so why identify with the outer world if it’s just a projection of your inner world?
