like I mean this very seriously as writing advice. the character should experience events and make decisions that make them different at the end of the story. they should be changed. they do not have to be improved.

they can get worse. they can make decisions of an increasingly terrible nature. they can stop taking risks on kindness. they can discover how much they can get away with. they can find religion, or abandon it, with negative effects on their moral creed. the character has to develop. the character does not have to grow.

#Helena #Helena Lewis #accidentally gets thrown onto an alien planet for two years in the middle of a rescue mission for her siblings and one of her good friends #friend got possessed and kidnapped said siblings #Helena is very very sure going in that sure if we can rescue them all that’s great—#—but if it’s between her friend and her siblings it’s her siblings no hesitation #(slight problem with this being that this mission is being organized by her friend’s mother who. is not doing that. tensions are high)#then they break the space time continuum she gets thrown to space for two years—#—her magic gets replaced with space-time magic from the whole thing so she’s only gone like half an hour from everyone else’s perspectives #but she gets back splits her siblings from her friend (who was guiding them out) and starts up the torture maze #the friend only gets out alive because a different friend who had been working with Helena saves her instead of herself #(they both end up fine don’t worry other friend just spends three hours walking to the edge of the torture maze where everybody’s looking—#—for her and then gets taken back to the group safely)#even after the whole debacle Helena and the first friend never really repair their relationship. friend tries Helena just will not have it
