This has been driving me insane because this quote is so incredibly Jewish but every time I saw it was completely divorced from Judaism in the version applying it to 'transsexual'.
The original concept that humans complete the act of creation by making bread from wheat is from the Talmud! And the specific "wheat but not bread, grapes but not wine" phrasing is from Jewish theologian Abraham Heschel but it is missing "clay but not bricks".
And among trans Jews the sentiment was already popular before I ever started seeing this specific phrasing so I knew, knew, knew a Jew and likely a trans Jew was involved.
As it happens, Ortberg's friend Julian is Jewish and they have strongly negative feelings about the way the quote has been removed from the context of their life as someone trans and Jewish. They used to have a thread up on xwitter about it but have since made their account private and only have a very terse FAQ online from which you can glean the treatment they likely received when being more open about their Jewishness, relationship to transness, and the interaction of both.
I've always thought there was something extremely Jewish about that quote! I had no idea that Julian is Jewish.
listen to me, this is so so important: you've gotta get used to really giving it your 60% as a default. like don't half-ass it necessarily but try not to go over 70% or so of an ass. you'll feel better and live a happier more fulfilled life, and on the rare occasions where you do need to lock the fuck in you'll be able to pull off bullshit that the sad miserable wretches giving it their 100% can never dream of, because they're busy draining themselves dry and you have energy reserves to spare.

For anyone interested the NCPN (Nieuwe Communistische Partij Nederland) has done a series of long article's on the economic reforms of China in the 70s and 80s. This article includes a section on the reintroduction of income disparities as a form of economic incentivisation.
Unlike a lot of similar discussions, the article series includes a high number of primary source documents published by the CPC during the reforms, allowing for more adequate discussion of how officials in the party saw the economic issues of the period and why they chose the path they did.

my serious answer to this would be moderate-high dose psilocybin followed by regular exercise and concentration meditation practice.

Psilocybin? Why psilocybin? Stimulants n such sure but I mostly associate that with having mystical revelations and Meaningfullness experiences.
The serious no-joke answer to this is because psilocybin and other psychedelics increase the entropic temperature parameter of the brain (see carhart-harris's well-supported entropic brain hypothesis) meaning that it dramatically increases neuroplasticity, flattens the habit energy landscape, making it easy to break existing habits and form new ones. For someone who's used to lackadaisical hedonism, going into a trip with the intention of cultivating discipline will allow a clean switch from old habits to new ones.
This effect is valence-agnostic, meaning it's as easy to form toxic new habits as it is beneficial ones. this is why my recommendation is coupling the trip with the establishment of an exercise habit and a concentration meditation habit, which are as far as I can tell the most effective habits to establish to train the mind-body into discipline in a healthy and sustainable manner while prioritizing wellbeing and personal autonomy.
Additionally, (but more speculatively) concentration meditation has been proposed to selectively lower the entropy of the brain, taking it further from a state of criticality, (Irrmischer et.al. Controlling the Temporal Structure of Brain Oscillations by Focused Attention Meditation. Hum Brain Mapp. 2018) meaning that the trip opens the door for positive change and then a subsequent concentration meditation habit, in addition to directly cultivating discipline, 'locks in' the positive habits gained in the period of neuroplasticity through a mechanism analogous to annealing.
