Not long ago (and still in many places!) it was unacceptably masculine for women to do any of those things. They had to invent special kinds of short hair it was okay for girls to have. You had to brand it as belonging to her boyfriend. People fought really hard for this!

Yet another route in thl that centers on takumis tsukkomi, a word they feel they MUST translate in a way that is weird and bad. I have some sympathy bc the closest eng equivalent is 'straight man'. and they can't call takumi straight. that would be stupid.

so instead we get a bunch of awkwardly constructed sentences about 'retorts'. Stop this. just Say tsukkomi and let people google it. we're so far in they can stand it.
