Philippians 2 says,
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
Through Jesus, we are welcomed into God’s family. We have become brothers and sisters, and He is now our Father. In this world, we are children of our parents, and we are acutely aware of the influence we have over them. They would give us the world if they could—all the more so could God!
With that knowledge, we boldly approach God, exuding the prestige of being called one of His. We humbly request things that only a Supreme Divine Being could accomplish. Hesitation is discouraged because it implies a lack of trust in our Father’s ability to provide.
This passage from Philippians made me reflect on how many times I’ve sought His Grace, not with a childlike heart, but with an imposition. My prayers have become less about asking for His mercy and more about “I am Your child; give me what I need.” How many times have I asked God for things that are essentially riches and glory? Sure, I could argue that gaining them would enable me to benefit others, but is that the true purpose of my wishes?
I am your child, Father. Help me lead a holy life by imitating Jesus.
