I just saw this ask post about reading and the need to learn reading by sound and I have always wondered this: How do you teach kids to read in English by sound when the spelling mostly does not reflect the modern sounds but the historic pronunciation? I'm a German native speaker and here we also learn to read by sound but phoneme-grapheme correlation is way more consistent in German. How do you teach kids that "ee" is [iː] (see) and "ea" is also [iː] (sea) but "ea" can also be [e] (jealous) and so on and so on? I had always assumed that english native speakers must learn reading more or less one whole word at a time since that's pretty much how we learn reading English as a second language. (I mean at that time we already know how to read in German and can get some rough orientation from the consonants at least some of the time.) But apparently I'm wrong. Any tricks or tips?

reality tv shows i think the mighty nein would win

beau - survivor. she can live through anything: poison, hunger, dehydration, etc. i think the challenge for beau would be to not kill the other contestants for being annoying to be honest.

jester - love is blind. she's gonna charm the pants off of everyone, win the season, drop the ball and use the money for her and fjord's second honeymoon

caduceus - masterchef. moves the slowest out of everyone yet still manages to finish on time. refuses to cook any meat or fish and uses substitutes but still doesn't get eliminated because his food tastes so good.

fjord - big brother. he can do well in the social aspect of the game while also being physical enough to win the challenges. he'd never get to be head of household though. will kill a man to win a phone call with jester.

yasha - great british bake off. she might try to add some bugs but with her charm and skills, the judges don't mind at all. bakes her winning creation for beau when her wife returns home

caleb - who wants to be a millionaire. the only game where the only thing you need is smarts. uses his one phone to call to essek to talk about tonight's dinner plans then wins the million.

molly - drag race. would do a killer impression of the ruby of the sea for snatch game. sewing skills unmatched. delivers it all during the rusical. queen.

veth - taskmaster. the quickest with the tasks and finds every loophole there is. somehow every item she brings is something that embarrasses fjord.

essek - the traitors. easily fools the rest of the residents. but secretly throwing up in anxiety every other day. makes it to the final three then forfeits himself out of guilt. fan favorite.

During yesterday’s game I made an off the cuff remark that Infernal music uses a system of nine modes named after the layers of Hell as opposed to the traditional seven in Western classical music so of course I’ve been coming up with a system of nine tones per octave for no gain whatsoever, I don’t think I’ve ever spent so much time on something with absolutely zero game effect

I haven’t had the time to play around with it so it probably sounds horrible, but okay it’s a system of alternating half-steps and full steps but with two sequential half-steps. The basic Avernal mode in C would be C, Db, Eb, E, F, Gb, Ab, A, and B (and with a final half-step to bring it back to C).

I mean it wouldn’t be hard for me to write a piece like that. It won’t sound “correct” to western ears because the root note, C, in that scale will sound like it wants to resolve up to the Db, but if your goal is for music to sound like it’s from Hell, then it’s doable.

I’m not stupid. I understood that just fine. Hell, my kids would have understood that just fine. But no one bothered to tell us.

i did know this before having kids (i have six). we have a kid that's needed multiple procedures requiring anesthesia. and every single time, i am asked multiple times if i'm sure he was not given any food or water after a certain point.

every single time i have had to say, "i understand that if he had food or water, he could aspirate it into his lungs under anesthesia. i am not lying to you." THEN someone would make a little note and i would stop being repeatedly asked.

not a single time was that risk explained to me. the only reason it came up was because i already knew. i still don't understand why it isn't standard pre-op counseling or pre-op check information, when me as a parent acknowledging the actual risk also put THE MEDICAL STAFF at ease because i conveyed that i had informed understanding as reason to not lie about giving my kid food.

"maybe some people will get nervous and refuse surgery" okay so they need more counseling about risks and anxiety, not less information in a way that actually does endanger their child or themselves!
