im losing my mind….shes jus a lil baby…
She’s oiling!
Sea otters have oil glands in their cheeks, and the vigorous rubbing is how they extract the oil, which then forms a layer on top of their fur.
(And yes, she is adorable).
this bitch got a skincare routine! she is THRIVIN!
Sea Otters have a SERIOUS skincare routine. Or rather, hair care! They’re the only marine mammals without a thick layer of blubber, so in order to stay warm in the frigid waters of the Pacific, they have to keep their coat in perfect condition. They have the thickest fur in the animal kingdom… over a million hairs per square inch! (It is insanely soft.) Their skin never gets wet because they oil/clean/groom their coats so well that it repels the water. (On average, they spend about 5 hours a day grooming.) They also eat like 25% of their body weight in seafood every day to keep their energy and body mass up.
And these little guys are a keystone species. Without them, kelp forest ecosystems would collapse, which would contribute even more to global warming.
So yeah, self care is important! Take it from the sea otter.
