4. the femboy character's response to being promised continuous sexual violence by a group being "cool thanks" reflects how the femboy community will do one of 3 things when confronted with the real violence transfems face : completely gloss over it, turn it into a joke, or say "that's hot" and turn it into more fuel for the degradation of transfemininity through sexualisation. this somehow manages to be a bit of all 3. mainly the third though

I've known a number of non binary people in my life and I think single biggest conclusion I can draw from that is that non binary people are not the same. Like if Men fit in box A and women fit in box B, people really, really want nonbinary people to fit in a theoretical box C, and it just doesn't work like that. They are outside the boxes. They defy any simple categorization because they are not a third way of being, but every other possible way of being.

Being supportive of binary people is relatively simple, they have decided to sort themselves into one of the boxes that we have lots of experience interacting with. Being supportive of nonbinary people can be comparatively tricky, because you have to resist the urge to create box C and drop them all there. That's how we end up with various prejudices like "woman lite". Humans really, really like to categorize things. It helps us think. Unfortunately, sometimes it helps us think wrong.

If you have a non binary person in your life, I think it is important to take the extra effort to learn about them specifically.

I just read an article about a man in Missouri who collected a woman’s skeletal remains he found in a cave and kept them in his house for roughly 60 years until his kids surrendered them to the local PD. I wish I could say this is the first time I’ve read about something like that happening but no.

I should clarify that the remains were declared to not historical in nature (usually signifying remains over 100 years old) and the death seemed suspicious but because of the 60 years that elapsed between her being found and the authorities being notified of her death, it is unlikely she will ever be identified and returned to her family. A 25-35 year old woman who was likely murdered in the 40s or 50s. Sitting in a stranger’s house for decades. It makes my skin CRAWL.

Historical or contemporary, unearthed grave or recent accident/violent death, DO NOT TAKE HUMAN REMAINS HOME WITH YOU WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU??? That is a PERSON.

I am trying to understand the point you are attempting to make by saying “bones aren’t a person” in the context of this post as human remains are, indeed, what remains of a person and every culture has unique ways of honoring their dead. Is it semantics to you? Is it an attempt to trivialize the humanity of remains that have been mishandled and/or stolen?

If I had a family member go missing and for decades I had to live with all the stress and axiety that came from not knowing what happened to them, and then found out a stranger had found their bones and kept them- kept my family's ability to rest- all that time, I'd burn down the house of anyone who said it was perfectly acceptable for someone to do that.

I'm gonna play the "just in case they aren't trolling" game for a minute here and clarify:

you're right that bones, or other human remains, are not literally a person, because the person is dead.

However, human beings do not--across known cultures and time periods, they do not--treat human remains like any other inanimate object.

Exactly what is done with the remains varies from one culture to another, but they are always treated as a special category of matter, and usually in a respectful way, often treating them as though the person were still in them. (Especially when the death is recent.)

We know the difference, of course, and in an extreme situation, we'll acknowledge it. If you were--for some reason--in a room with your grandmother's remains and a live baby that you've never seen before in your life, and that room catches fire, obviously you're going to grab the baby and leave the body, because when you get right down to it, the baby is a person and the stuff in the coffin isn't.

But in normal life, outside of emergencies, we treat human remains as honorary persons. It's not necessarily logical, but it's pretty deeply ingrained; there are no known human societies, past or present, that threw human remains out with the rest of the trash.

(Well, not their own people's remains, anyway. When you see human beings treating human remains like trash, it's generally because they had also been treating the people like trash when they were alive.)

Arguing that it's "superstition" and religious to care about people's bones not being used for science, since they're dead and not a person anymore so it shouldn't matter. It would seem that every culture regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof have a taboo about the dead but I guess the anthropology professor missed that

In actuality, people already know you have a preference because that is a very normal thing to have. So the actual kindest choice to make is to just be honest about what you want, because most people will feel most comfortable when they know for sure that the decision you've both made is truly a mutual agreement.
