Hot damn The Pitt absolutely nails its setting. Other than a couple establishing shots it all takes place inside a hospital, but due to the details and dialogue it genuinely feels like it's taking place in Pittsburgh.
The stolen ambulance going down 376. The patient who was at Pamela's right before. Primanti bros sandwiches. The woman who brings her husband Burgatory. Tying in somewhat recent local events like a patient with PTSD because of what happened at the Tree of Life. In two seasons they mention everywhere from North Shore and Squirrel Hill to Monroeville and Swissvale. When it's the 4th of July a fursuiter comes in with heatstroke because of course, Anthrocon is almost always over the 4th. The historical reenactors from the Fort Pitt Museum.
Not a lot of shows bother to do that so thoroughly. I immediately thought of House, since it's also a medical drama I've watched (though one that's constructed very differently and enjoyable for different reasons). That show is set in Princeton, New Jersey. I lived in Pittsburgh seven years but I also happened to live near Princeton for five years (West Windsor, they're both in Mercer County and I enjoyed wandering into Princeton). At no point does House specifically feel grounded in NJ.
Obviously a show doesn't have to go all in on its setting, but I wasn't expecting that and it's absolutely delightful. I want Pamela's now; maybe I should try and recreate some Gail's Favorite Eggs sometime soon. Thanks for the Pburgh nostalgia trip, The Pitt. Still my favorite city I've inhabited yet and I do miss it sometimes.
