Yeo-ri is a better person than me. If I had the power to get other people haunted with my touch AND people were acting up and working against me, you best believe I would be getting bitches haunted left and right.

it's such bs that the whole guilt-ridden stoic self-sacrificing martyr thing doesn't work outside of fiction. repressing all your emotions and neglecting your physical wellbeing should make you god's most tragically beautiful morally unassailable little soldier of righteousness but all it does is give you bad skin and gastrointestinal problems

Watching this season of My Dearest crystallized something I was already thinking:
Is Jang Hyun a perfect choice in abstract? Probably not. He is terrible at making himself emotionally vulnerable first or communicating or trusting.
Guess what? None of it matters in the least.
Heâs the perfect choice for Gil Chae, a 17th century lady living a horrifying invasion and its even more horrifying aftermath.
You know why? Because in the insane, bloody, human lives have literally no value and death and rape are constants world she finds herself in, all that matters is that Jang Hyun is the sole man who is both willing AND capable to do anything to save and protect her. Whether itâs fighting an entire military unit alone while ill and winning or committing to save her from Qing concubinage to a literal prince and everything else in between large and small.
If she were a 21st century yuppie, she could discuss with her girlfriends at leisure as to whether his habit of verbally lashing out when heâs hurt is acceptable or whether the fact that he tries very hard to pretend he doesnât care as much as he does and just teases is annoying or whether the fact that he doesnât understand her ties to her family and doesnât want to accommodate them makes him a problematic long term prospect. Hell, she would even think long and hard whether his issues about his background would come back to bite if they have kids.
But none of it matters in the least in Gil Chaeâs circumstances. All that matters is that heâs the sole man who always protects her. Everyone else, her husband included, is incapable, unwilling or both. They all have limits to what they will do. Jang Hyun does not. Itâs like the Maslow hierarchy of needs only in a relationship.
I often joke watching period shows that the most attractive quality in a period man is his giant army. Jang Hyun does not have an army. But he does all he can to become a one-man army for Gil Chae and in 17th century, during an invasion and its aftermath, nothing else ever can compete with that.
Prosecutor Ma is the funniest guy ever, and they're both so kind and cool and just. I really am enjoying this so much. Rooting for them T_T
MY DEAR TUMBLR USERS!!
WONDERFUL NEWS!!
NETHERFIELD PARK IS LET AT LAST!!!
What a wonderful thing for our girls!!!
How so? How can it affect them? đ¤¨
My dear Merian! You must know I am thinking of his reblogging from one of them!
Is that his design in blogging here?
Design? nonsense, how can you write so! But it is very likely that he may reblog from one of them, and therefore you must follow him as soon as his blog is online.
I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may follow him, or they may follow him by themselves, which perhaps will be still better for them, for as you are as clever as any of them he might reblog most from you of the party.
My dear, you flatter me. I certainly HAVE had my share of cleverness, but I do not pretend to be anything extraordinary now. When a woman has five grown-up mutuals, she ought to give over thinking of her own reblog counts.
In such cases, a woman has not often much of a reblog count to think of.
Ray Bradburyâs short story âThere Will Come Soft Rainsâ that was written in 1950 is set on the day of August 4th, 2026 (tomorrow)!! Nowâs your chance to read it around the time itâs based in!
Audio: A recording of Leonard Nimoy reading it on Internet Archive.
Text: A PDF version.
Graphic Novel: On Internet Archive.
I used to set this one for second year undergraduate creative writing seminars on writing science fiction on a double bill with Octavia E. Butler's "Bloodchild" and no-one here gets out alive.
!!!! Today is the only chance weâll ever have to listen to this absolute banger of apocalyptic fiction on the very day the story is set đ˛â¨
Nemoyâs voice is PERFECT in this!
(A content warning if you do listen - the dog dies, though itâs not super graphic)
I paused the robot vacuum so I could listen to this 1950âs story predicting the robot vacuum.
Adding Sara Teasdale's poem of the same name that inspired the story because you gotta read them together.
My single favorite sequence in Ever Night is neither battle nor a shippy scene
It is this.
The Emperor has gotten to the bottom of the Lin case and cleared the household and his attendants recite the royal decree listing all those wrongfully killed in that household. And Ning Que says he loved hearing familiar names, but that is not all - and he mentions servants and cooks. I love the bewilderment on the officialsâ faces because those people didnât even register to them. And Ning Que mentions his parents werenât listed; to which the attendants point the General and his wife were mentioned first. âThey were not my parents,â responds Ning Que.
GUUUUUH!!! I love this so! Because it really upends not only the courtâs presumption but the viewerâs - through the whole drama, it really looks like it is the Generalâs son who escaped and now seeks revenge. But no. Itâs not. And it really brings to bear the horrifying collateral damage of all those big political and mystical games. Ning Queâs family wasnât the target not just because the prophecy was misunderstood (hello, wrong house!) but because they werenât even gunning for them in that house; it was just some collateral murder.
And I love love love love love that the heavenly sectsâ sins, the generalâs sins, and courtâs sins, are brought back home to roost not by a noble survivor heir a la Nirvana in Fire (I love NiF, donât worry) but a complete nobody, a step up from a slaveâŚ
Also, I love this shot:
This is why he said this when he met Chen Zixian:
I wondered for a second why he would say that there were 100 people in the Lin household and âwhy slaughter all the householdâ with emphasis on the doorkeeper but then totally put that thought away because they started fighting lol. But it totally makes sense because why would the Generalâs son take revenge for the servants of the Lin household who were wrongfully killed unless of course, he himself is not the Generalâs son but one of the servants.
It was such a jaw dropping moment that smacked you in the face not just with the charactersâ assumptions but with the viewersâ own assumptions about revenge narratives.
Why CANâT a servantâs son seek revenge?
And I will also never be over the fact of how the narrative drives him without preaching or being in your face the utter cruelty of that world of how little life matters - NQâa whole life, whole family, was taken apart not because he (or his loved ones) was the target of a prophecy, because his family was the target of a conspiracy - they were collateral damage to a wrong GPS reading!!!! Itâs like all those revenge dramas, from great ones like NiF and Zang Hai to ones I didnât care for like Anle - itâs always the survivor of the noble family and yes they also mention the household/soldiers/whoever who died but in one mass. And in EN, for once, someone stands out from that inchoate lumpen mass and goes - I donât care about your noble goal, I want to avenge a nobody none of you knew or cared for except in concept.
Itâs actually an echo to me of Joy of Life (which is also adapted from Mao Niâs novel) where almost nobody in his circle except Fan Xian gets the tragedy of TJLâs death - nobody can comprehend that Fan Xian is willing to go to war and overturn the world and even wreck his own hope of love and happiness for aâŚguard. Class is too ingrained.
âan echo to me of Joy of Lifeâ YESSS! Reminds me of how even Wan'er thinks the reason why FX is so affected by TZJ is because he was his friend. And while thatâs partly true, it totally ignores the fact that FX is mad at how easily the nobles take away someoneâs life. The Shijia town that Crown Prince burns overnight. The dad of the prostitute who was killed in cold blood in broad daylight under Li Chengzeâs orders and he doesnât even recognize the dadâs name when Fan Xian speaks the dadâs name in front of him. The Ming Family torturing, exploiting and murdering the refugees. To all these nobles/royals, the people they kill are nameless nobodies. And since they are nameless nobodies, their life and death means nothing to them. And if their life and death does affect them or one from their class, then it must be because they were friends because if not for that there is no reason to lament over the unjust killing of a nobody.
And it makes sense for these characters living in times of absolute class divide to not care for deaths of ânobodiesâ on the streets or as you said mention them in mass but it did really opened my eyes to how itâs always someone from the nobility taking revenge like what is up with that omg. This narrative of a royal prince taking revenge has been done so many times and each one in similar way that I didnât even question NQâs identity to be anything other than the Generalâs son. He himself never says who he is but the characters assume and I believe that assumption. I see what you did there Mao Ni and I appreciate it. More commoners taking revenge, please.
Also, now Iâm missing JOL lol. They really just dropped a poster of season 3 and dipped.
