I know intersex people are still getting excluded in a lot of LGBTQIA+ spaces (let alone wider society) and I think it's crucial to show this group is included in the statement that we all deserve equal rights.

it's like the shaving thing. we can't deny that there are women for whom wearing a bra or shaving provides physical comfort/sensory relief. but it would also be unbelievably naive and shortsighted to deny that the predominant cultural expectation for women with regard to wearing bras and shaving is that it is a practice that maintains an image of how women's bodies should naturally look and that decrying other women who criticize or even forgo that practice (often for reasons related to their own comfort or relief!) often just has the impact of reinforcing coercive gender norms!

women are different people with different experiences, bodies, and preferences, not a monolith. but recognition of this difference can't supersede a structural analysis of how women are oppressed as a class in a way that does, in fact, flatten the manifold experiences of women into a norm of Woman that we are all expected to live up to.

#i feel like something that gets lost in these conversations is that you can also do these things 'wrong'.#the expectation is that you shave or wear a bra etc but you can also shave Wrong or wear a bra Wrong#the cultural expectation is not only that you do this but that you do it a specific way#doing it Wrong doesnt actually count#which kind of proves its all to an end (conformity to an ideal of womanhood) rather than an overall vague unknowable thing (tags from @tittys)

this is really an interesting and useful thing to point out because it gets to the heart of things i don't think is acknowledged enough:

a) that Womanhood (or, indeed, Manhood) is a phantasmatic ideal that no human person can ever live up to - this is a key insight of butler's that i think popular representations of their theories often miss - and

b) that Womanhood as an ideal is still considered hierarchically lesser than Manhood as an ideal, so that even doing Womanhood 'right' means you're doing gender wrong.

women are set up to lose, to be the objects of gendered scrutiny no matter what and this ought to be a basis for solidarity among women, a starting point for multifaceted conversations that take into account the different ways that misogyny punishes women differently (especially when inflected by racism, classism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.). and sometimes this does mean taking the l and realizing your perspective on misogyny and women's experiences is necessarily limited by your own situated perspective. and that maybe other women talking about how they experience oppression differently isn't an attack on you. our assumptions about how and where women who are different to us might experience misogyny or not are always potentially fallible and a good antidote is listening in good faith.
