I loved Atticus Finch. All the girls were in love with Gregory Peck. No, I wasn’t in love with him - well, a little - but no, I wanted to be him. Fight the good fight? Change the world?
just saw pictures from mike flanagan carrie
okay serious fucking question, must he de-fang every female character he touches?
mike, it's actually more interesting for audiences that margaret is an abusive religious fundie (and also a victim of marital rape) who tries to literally beat the idea of sin into her daughter, it is actually TIMELY to adapt that correctly at this particular american moment. WHY is he so scared of every piece of source material that has ever been handed to him? i MUST know
you're laughing, mike flanagan wants to do gilmore girls with telekinetic rage and you're laughing
what if carrie was about a young witch searching for a missing cat in the alps
"To the best of my knowledge, that was the first show that truly approached the look of the TV show itself in terms of cinema in terms of, "How much of the story can we tell visually?" "How much can we make this look like not just a movie but a really wonderfully shot movie?" - Vince Gilligan on what he learned from The X-files

yes, the portrayal of healthy platonic male friendships in lord of the rings is extremely important in showing not only healthy masculinity, but healthy complex and deep non-romantic same sex relationships. however, that doesn't stop frodo and sam from being gay as fuck

When I was at the Nuclear History museum in Albuquerque a week or so ago, one of the items on display that instantly caught my attention was this shoe fitting fluoroscope! I'd never seen one in the flesh before, obviously, but it was very exciting because of that one Eddie flashback in IT where he was very young - soon after his dad passed - and at the shoe store with his mom. Excerpt below:
There is so much to unpack here, and I don't want to write like an ENTIRE thing about it because it's been a hot minute since I wrote any IT meta...
But, this one tiny little memory just says so much about Eddie. His 'mad joy' at the idea of FINALLY getting hurt, of finally being able to have the human experience of pain and to survive it, is such a vital part of his character. He wants to fall. He doesn't want to get caught. He wants to have that experience, and the knowledge that he'll be okay after it happens. This of course comes back again later when Henry breaks his arm and he laughs through it, even as he's screaming and crying, because it was finally real pain, for the very first time. No one to catch him that time, no one to prevent it. "Finding out you could still exist inside the pain, in spite of the pain." And it cleared his mind - he saw Henry for what he was, and he saw his mom for what she was. The pain was awful, but he realized with this sort of hysterical appreciation, that he could handle it. And when he's about to pass out from it and he hears Officer Nell's voice, he briefly imagines it's actually Richie doing his impersonation of Officer Nell. Even when he's dying later on he has the same kind of thought, that this isn't bad, not bad at all - after all, the pain allows him to finally see himself clearly for what he is, no guilt, no shame, and able to try to say what he needed to say to Richie.
Not to mention that in this passage, he wonders if he will go to Hell after the fluoroscope's cancer causing radiation inevitably kills him. I know I've written at length before about the religious elements in Eddie's chapters (constantly fearing that he is going to Hell for no reason he can really identify other than his internal, inherent 'wrongness', among other things), but I just have to point it out again. He has NO reason to wonder that aside from being made to feel guilty for existing, though he can't yet explain why. And the fact that he's remembering this as an adult, and he specifically remembers having that thought, the same way he specifically remembers his mom making homophobic comments about the Tracker Bros later on... these memories stay with him for a reason, and in my opinion, the reasons are directly related.
Finally, shoes are a theme in Eddie's character arc both in relation to Richie (though he is not in this memory, obviously) and to his always just out of reach independence. He's in a shoe store, excited and fascinated, and his mom swoops in to terrify him. Right before this memory came up, he reflects on a different memory of his mom preventing him from participating in P.E. although he loved to run and was good at it. Right before that, he's packing his shoes and starts to think of Richie before he's cut off by his 'asthma'. Later, Richie gets taunted by IT about Bev and Eddie specifically - she wears her husband's ring around her neck and Eddie brings his saddle shoes to the sewer sock hop. And then of course there's the battle with IT the first time around, when Eddie loses his shoe beating the shit out of the crawling eye and Richie promises to buy him a new pair of Keds afterward.
Eddie running is threaded throughout - he runs fast, he should run in the opposite direction of his mother, etc. IT's 'it won't do you any good to run, Eddie' during the leper scene and then later, again, he thinks of that line when he's around his mom again in Eddie's Bad Break and sees her as predatory (along with his internal plea of 'she's only eating me because she loves me'). Shoes symbolize mobility, a way of escaping, of leaving, just like the trains and seagulls and anything else that can get out of Derry and away from Sonia - but shoes are also intertwined with Richie, who teases Eddie but doesn't see him as fragile, who has big dreams and aspirations that Eddie admires. Because Eddie isn't allowed to have aspirations. He's not allowed to run. After all, he's too delicate for that.
Anyway, love how I said I wasn't going to write a whole thing. But I promise this could've had a lot more meat to it. Mostly I was just really excited about the fluoroscope. It was very important to me that there was one at this museum.
Eddie Kaspbrak just lives in my brain rent-free to this day.
