Sorry to get serious on a joke but this is why using Unique passwords site-to-site is way more important than having complex passwords or changing them frequently. Chances are much lower that your, say, bank, is going to have a data breach that exposes your password. Never impossible, but pretty low. But if you sign up for some random retail site with the exact same login details, and that site has a data leak... People take those login details and try them on every higher-target site possible. Your best defense is to not have those login details match up. That's why it matters

Get a password manager. You will create 1 trillion accounts in your lifetime because everything is garbage now. Avoid cloud garbage.

Use easy to remember passphrases for things you need to remember, each unique to its one application. KeePassXC can generate them (and pws in general) for you.

Back up your password manager regularly. Your drives will fail in your lifetime. Write important ones down and store them as safely as you would cash deposits.

Every site that tells you you need special characters (hahapenisfuni is not more secure than hahapenis&69funi, a passphrase of 7 random words from a sensible word list is no more secure than one with two random characters from a pool of, what, 20?) or change your password frequently is bullshitting. Any site that has a character limit on their pws considers you mentally challenged.

I don't think I need a data leak to guess Janel's password123. Don't make up your own passwords by trying to be creative, see 1.

I think they just assume that a slur is very easily guessed because a lot of people would put profanity in these fields (because account creation is a form of psychological warfare).

Important security tip: these fucking security questions are bull crap. If you answer truthfully and someone knows you they will have an easier time guessing them than your password. What you should do when these things are mandatory is to put another password in there and save it in a secure location. Get a password manager like KeePassXC, don't use anything with cloud backup bullshit (Bitwarden, LastPass, Dashlane, 1Password...) and you're golden. KeePassXC lets you store things like security questions for accounts as well.

I do not recommend using your browser's password manager because it is one step removed from keeping all your passwords in a .txt on your drive.

the above will decrease the amount of ads you see system-wide. however: hands down the BEST ANDROID ADBLOCKING feature is the ability to install Firefox with uBlock Origin enabled.

Install Firefox -> Settings -> Extensions -> uBlock Origin

this only blocks browser ads, but HOLY SHIT does that matter if you try browsing websites over apps when possible. which you should bc it's awesome and gives you SO much more control. E.g. blocks youtube.com ads and you can play videos in the background. works with spotify.com too

Pro tip: toggle on 'Desktop site' to avoid mobile sites that are purposely designed to bully you into using the app. Desktop mode fixes a surprising number of problems

I think the thing that annoys me most about AI on a personal, day to day, level is what it has done to grammar checkers. If you've never done a lot of editing, or used to 5+ years ago but haven't really in the last couple years, I can't even begin to describe how fucking BAD this shit has gotten. And as an author it is EXHAUSTING.

I just want to catch spelling errors and accidental double spaces and repeated phrases and whenever I use the wrong too/to or affect/effect and shit. But no. They've shoved AI up the ass of every grammar checking software out there and now they all fucking suck and make the most random, obnoxious, nonsensical suggestions.

And yeah, I can ignore all the times it's trying to get me to cut out any semblance of my own voice, or shove things into the wrong tense, or make the most random suggestions on comma usage. But if it's getting all that WRONG, what is it just straight up missing that I SHOULD be correcting? What real spelling and grammar errors are still lurking in there?

Even my own 100% personal projects are getting sent to other people whether it's editors or printers or beta readers and unless every single person in that train is using the same products, things can get wonky.

Libre Office and Word handle formatting differently on the back end, which can completely break documents if you move them back and forth between the two. So if I write in Libre Office but my beta readers are still using Word, when I send them a manuscript for review there's a good chance things won't look right and my beta reader will not actually be reviewing what I sent them.

Industry standards are industry standards FOR A REASON. Having everyone on the same workflow can be crucial to getting things done effectively and correctly without creating a lot of extra work. And those things are not going to change overnight, as much as we might want them to.

If you're a young writer you're likely not going to have the background knowledge to know what is and isn't a good suggestion, you're just going to see a document that makes it look like you made every mistake possible so clearly you must be a terrible, stupid writer and should just give up.

Trying to impose a rules on a dog shit factory like MS to make their product 5% less fecal is not only not feasible, it is absurd to think it can do anything. Enshittification is Microsoft's entire business model so unless we stop vendor locking ourselves nothing is ever going to change. In academic writing (specifically, the case where people agree to use LaTeX) you aren't forced to use a garbage editor because there are countless editors that all produce the same files. But (La)TeX has terrible syntax and an extremely duct taped ecosystem. It can't replace word.

I'm guessing this is why Ellipsus chose to run with Markdown. Syntax is simple and quick to pick up, and is probably sufficient formatting for the majority of people doing creative writing (vs. the formatting complexity of academic or technical writing).
