Drinking soda is better than drinking nothing all day. Eating ice cream for dinner is better than eating nothing for dinner. Eating salsa is better than having no produce in your diet at all.
Water is way more hydrating than soda, but soda is more hydrating than nothing. A balanced meal is way more nutritious than ice cream, but ice cream is more nutritious than nothing.
Something is better than nothing. Some hydration is better than no hydration. Some nutrients are better than no nutrients. Some produce is better than no produce.
Don't let societally imposed food guilt trick you into believing that nothing is a better choice. Nourishing your body, however you can, is always the better choice. Fed is best. Always.
I finished reading Blood of the Gods by Wren L. Rivers, I loved it of course!! It kept me so hooked the whole time. And it was so exciting to see it completed after they developed it for years. Who doesn't love a queer found family pirate adventure?
So, @corvidarcana, I believe I've finished a playlist for it! I'll explain all of my reasoning below the cut, because I'm passionate about this, and while I will try to keep the language pretty general, minor spoilers be warned! And for this playlist, the order matters!
New River, The Oh Hellos
An upbeat start to the playlist, this one is probably the most literal song on here. There's water, and a lot of it. It's also the earliest event that happens in the timeline, as far as this playlist goes.
"I know the winds from the south have the waves riled up like a hungry mouth, and your stomach goes hollow with the thought that it could swallow you whole"
In The Wind, Lord Huron
This one has a double meaning. It's a song about loss, so in that sense it resembles Jonah, early in his story. On top of that, it can also refer to Aeris at that same point in time, still in his element. Especially at the end of the song, where the main melody of the album turns absolutely ethereal. Definitely a more mellow song.
"Death is a wall but it can't be the end, you are my protector and my best friend"
Human, Of Monsters and Men
The start of Stranger's journey. I like how dirty and gritty the theme is, it's a good contrast from the pretty melody before. Emphasizes how their start was not smooth, being human is hard enough without everything else!
"Cage me like an animal, a crown with gems and gold"
The Stranger, Lord Huron
Yay another literal song! Stranger has joined the crew, and Jonah is not welcoming. Realizing as I type this up, the ending of the song is a nice touch, too, after knowing how this story ends.
"Came out of the ocean like you came out of a dream ... Of all the strangers you're the strangest that I've seen"
Abandon Ship, Fin Argus
The found family anthem. Forget your past (pun intended), you're with us now! It's nice to be accepted for who you are. And, of course, added bonus for being a pirate-themed song!
"Everything you thought you knew, like no one being there for you, just trust me that it isn't true. This is our ship, and we're you're crew"
Rain Clouds, The Arcadian Wild
I see this song focusing back on Jonah and Stranger. Stranger hasn't quite found their footing yet, and people are less than kind in this harsh world. Jonah is starting to support them now! Bonus points again for the rain metaphors.
"Close your frightened eyes, hide behind my love for you"
Lightning and Thunder, Marianas Trench
With the rain comes lightning and thunder. I found out, in making this, that this album is based on the Hero's Journey archetype!! This song is the "Call to Action" aspect. Now everyone is getting their bearings together and something big is starting. On top of that, Jonah and Stranger's bond is building into something strong.
"Fate is calling. It's turning, burning, in my veins. It's stronger and harder than lightning and thunder"
The Last Shanty, The Celtic Collection
I couldn't NOT put a sea shanty on here, and this one fits the most out of those I know. It's a silly song, it feels like a fool learning to sail. Which is perfect for this.
"Don't climb up the mast, if you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Just get your civvies ready for another run ashore"
Ship in a Bottle, Fin Argus
Back into darker territories now. This is an awesome song. It's desperate at its core. Literally, it's about sailing alone. Metaphorically, it's about pushing away your support system to deal with life's pains alone. Jonah has issues, but at least he has friends that aren't afraid to break down his walls.
"Oh captain, make up your mind before the salt burns your eyes and you run out of time"
Hello My Old Heart, The Oh Hellos
Mellow song again. Similar to Ship in a Bottle, but more raw, and with a touch of hope at the end. It hurts to love.
"In there you're safe. And it's true you'll never beat, but you'll never break"
Meteor Shower, Owl City
A beautiful song about connection and change. It says, I know I'm different now, but please don't leave me.
"I have been made new. Please don't let me go, I desperately need you"
The Cave, Mumford and Sons
Answers the last song, saying I will always be here with you. Odyssey references give it points, and now the playlist starts to pick up tempo again.
"I won't let you choke on that noose around your neck ... let me at the truth which will refresh my broken mind"
Thunderstruck, Owl City & Sarah Russell
This song has great contrast between the meaning and the upbeat tones. It's the "lovers doomed by the narrative" song. Again, points for having thunder in it.
"I'm just a stranger in the stars ... I'm leaving the world behind"
Your Bones, Of Monsters and Men
A chill song before the finale. A song about sailing and mortality. Seems appropriate for this story.
"All that's left are your bones that will soon sink like stones"
Haven, Marianas Trench
The epic finale. I love a song with different phases to it, and included in this one is a mashup of the Hero's Journey album I mentioned earlier. It sounds so awesome, and it gets more points for including the Pirates of the Caribbean melody.
"Destined for the storm all my life. This tempest of mine ... My final denial to resurrection ... It's only you and me now, no one's getting out alive"
the concept of percy and annabeth watching a marine life documentary together and annabeth is sobbing because the narrator is discussing climate change effects while sad music plays and percy is giggling because the octopus and shark have been calling each other sea slurs in almost all the footage
i think we should be ridiculing them more for this. you don't get to try and go all "queer website" when your staff likes to go on nuking sprees targeting the trans fem users
