Casual observation from someone old enough to remember: in the year 2000 financial advice was that rent should be no more than 1/4 of your income.

Until the mid 80s, the advice was that if you must rent instead of owning, then that 20% of your monthly income (oh yes, only 20%) should include all your utilities too.

After all, rent costs more than a mortgage, so it should offer more too.

It's August now, which means the Sockeye run is pretty much done. Soon we should start seeing the Coho run, which is smaller but still important. After that will be the Fall Feast -- when the bodies of spawned sockeye start washing down the river from Lake Brooks.

The sockeye run this year was smaller than the modern average, one of the worst runs the Naknek River has seen in the last decade. That's why we are seeing so many bears pile up at the falls: they're hungry, and looking for food. We've still had some good pulses though, and it didn't run late like it has in some previous years.

I hope the Coho run is good this year, because the bears could use the boost. I know we've seen some Pink salmon this year also, which i haven't really seen much before. I imagine that the diversity of salmon is extra important when the Sockeye run is worse than usual -- it means the bears have more species to fall back on for food.

also, during August the number of bears we see usually dips. Lots of bears go on "August walkabouts" -- they head up to Brooks Lake or other smaller salmon streams in search of food. There will still be bears on the cams, to be clear -- there are actually more bears during August these days than there were 10 years ago -- just less than there are in July or September.

So there's two species of sea lion in North America: the California sea lion, ranging along California (including Baja) but not ranging into the north coast or into oregon

And the Stellar's sea lion, which are WAY bigger and live in Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska

A male Stellars sea lion showed up in SF like a month ago and just kinda. Didn't know what to do, and joined a colony of California sea lions, and is just kinda chilling there now.
