And I guess he doesn’t count as a serial killer but Eric Harris had already been making threats and harrassing students to an extreme degree before Columbine- police literally had a search warrant but they just never acted on it. If they had, they would have found the guns and pipe bombs and the shooting could have been easily prevented. They even tried to cover this up afterwards.

Serial killers and mass murders are usually not that smart, police have just historically refused to do their actual jobs.

There's a stanza from Annabel Lee that's been tickling my brainstem for a while, and it feels even more relevant now that we know how John and Alecto are bound together, and that their love was and still is mutual:

That's the heart of it, isn't it? The source of all of John's power, the reason he's God, it's because his soul is connected to his Annabel Lee's. To end all of this, they'll need to be dissevered.

I'd say that the angels have already tried and failed, and the demons look like they're winding up to take a shot. Odds are that'll go about as well for them as it did for Augustine and Mercy. But there's someone the poem doesn't ask. It doesn't account for Annabel.

I think that may be why it matters so much that that Alecto still loves John, and where the true horror of love comes in. If Alecto's soul is going to be seperated from John's, Alecto has to want it. No one else can do it for her. Annabel Lee has to become the subject, and not the object.

I know you're joking about the lesbian breaking up with her shitty boyfriend thing, but part of the point of all of this is that Alecto's love for John is both sincere and something she chose. It's not some aberration that she got pressured into, she chose him out of all of humanity. She had agency in creating this situation, and it's probably her initiative that will resolve it.

I understand the urge to downplay the depth and importance of John and Alecto's relationship. It's easy to say "throw the whole man out" and move on. It's much much harder to cope with the complexities that come from someone deeply loving a person who has hurt them. But I really think that discomfort is something we have to learn to sit with, if we want to understand Alecto as a person.

On one hand, there several reasons I don't care for romantic Mercy x Cristabel. I'm arospec and polyamorous myself, so I don't like the implication that Mercy couldn't be this eternally devastated over her actual best friend— that Cristabel couldn't be the most important person in the universe to her and also platonic— and I don't like the way it often feels like people push it to downplay or erase the polycule. I could ramble a bit more, but those are the big ones.

ON THE OTHER HAND... Christabel, with the h, very much is the name of titular character in a roughly-1800 unfinished sapphic and maybe-vampire poem, as the main thing the name is associated with, so like. This doesn't give me evidence for Mercy but you know what?

My new terrible headcanon:

Mercy was not romantically in love with Cristabel. Cristabel was in love with Mercy, but first she was a celibate nun and then she didn't want to overstep when, well, yeah Mercy was polyamorous but her love life was clearly complicated enough, and she wouldn't wanna put any pressure on her, so she simply did not say anything Ever.

:) Mercy learned about this via permeability of the soul and starting to experience Cristabel's memories.
