Did they task the vampires with hanging up the flags š
favourite things from phmovie that were added in/well adapted:
'good luck' on a sticky note on ryland's coma suit
the use of the videolog as a way to convey the inner monologue to the screen
grace rocky save stars
the scene where they activate the IR view when ryland is doing the petrova line EVA collection at tau ceti and he's amongst the astrophage. god
just the entire execution of rocky and eridian language. PERFECT. that last scene where ryland doesn't need the translator? god
eva stratt double parked coffee
BLIP-A DESIGN. XENONITE DESIGN. ERIDIAN DESIGN. all impeccable.
'time to go fishing, question?'
the mental health screen room and rocky getting to experience bits of earth via it
the music while the hail mary and the blip a start spinning in sync. actually, just all of the music
ryland grace earth hackey sack packed on the hail mary, presumably on stratt's orders + ryland grace nerdy as fuck graphic tshirts packed on the hail mary, presumably on stratt's orders
implication that PHM sent a military jet to grover cleveland middle school to draw those 'save the world' pictures within 3 days so that they could send them with ryland on the hail mary. GOD.
nannybot -> armando. also ryland calling the ship 'mary'
not strictly within the movie but the tagline 'believe in the hail mary'. yeah.
yao and ilyukhina's collections of photographs and the way ryland cries over them when he does the space burial. they were his friends. he can't remember.
the scene where he's walking through the dark tunnel in the orange eva suit and it's like the inverse of the iconic 2001 space odyssey shot
he bikes to work and it's not for exercise
he vomits into a traffic cone after the supersonic jet ride
he runs from the baikonur facility and claws at the earth under his nails before getting sedated. one last look at the sky.
"WHOOMP THERE IT IS"
ryland grace in his classroom looking at the taped-up line running from venus to the sun that he's made to try to explain to his students what no one understands
ryan gosling's delivery of I showed you a clock and now youre showing me a clock <- THATS A NERD! THATS MY RYLAND GRACE!
"of course i'll watch you sleep, buddy. you gotta promise me you'll wake up though" just kill me now
grace getting to see the the blip-a! also, grace only remembering he didn't volunteer when he sees the light refracting off the blip-a.
rocky make door you close door
AND MOST OF ALL. they. made rockys handprint a scar on grace's arm. forever.
things I missed most from the book that weren't included in the movie
"I don't know if you can hear me. but i'm here, buddy, I'm on your hull!!" movie scene was good but grace clinging onto the blip-a thwacking a wrench into the hull in desperation while space is cold and grey and unrelenting in its darkness and silence around him and he doesnt know if rocky is dead. grace, question? you are here, question?
coma resistance gene plotline. this is FOUNDATIONAL for my understanding of stratt to sending ryland. if she could she would have gone herself. any of the PHM biology techs could have feasibly gone in the movie-verse. but they can't. it's one in 7000 and their next option is a distillery worker from paraguay. ryland grace, microbiologist sentenced to marytrdom by his own genes.... its delicious
doomed climatologist of all time, francois leclerc. he runs the numbers and knows we have nineteen years. he snaps and tells stratt 'this isnāt some optional outcome.' he nukes antarctica and cries. he has no choice
the fact that in the book grace is forced to work on analysing the probe samples and getting roped into PHM. in the movie he says 'I want to help earth if I can!' in that scene w the earth beanbag... its imperative to me that he literally never asked to do any of this at all
"how have you been lately" "dr shapiro and I have begun a sexual relationship"
steve, creator of the beetles
"do not fuck up my house, roscosmos bastards" ilyukhina line you are sorely missed
dmitri and grace bonding over puns and spin drives
'you are a fundamentally good man, dr grace.' 'you're murdering me.'
"why did the kiwi government think you were embezzling millions of dollars" "probably because I was embezzling millions of dollars"
dr lokken and dr grace's panspermia feud
the emotional whiplash of "Sorry, Rocky" after grace realises he can only go back to the blip-a OR earth to āI know youād love a beetle to take apart, but I couldnāt spare one.ā
the desperation of circling the petrovascope to locate the blip-a in increasing 5* slants not knowing if he's going to find anything.

some people seem to think aotearoa new zealand is just fields and hills and grass. maybe some mountains. maybe a fjord or two. which is so fascinating to me because we have so many different biomes and landscapes it's bonkers.
we have massive volcanic fields. we have native palm trees and mangroves up north. we have huge swaths of geothermal areas that have geysers and bubbling hot mud and multicoloured pools. we have dense temperate rainforests. we have fern trees that grow ridiculously tall. we have huge tussock grasslands. we have a freezing cold desert. we have huge black sand beaches. we have sand dunes that stretch for kilometres. I love you aotearoa. this isn't even all of it these are just a few examples man
it's ridiculously beautiful and varied over here and yet when you say "new zealand", a lot of people imagine grass fields and sheep. which to be fair. we do also have. BUT STILL
long story short: it's not all fields and sheep. p.s. yes those are people at the top of the sand dune in the last photo

#I have a suspicion that a lot of people think aotearoa is a lot smaller than it actually is #I think there's a tendency especially for europeans and east-coast americans to think of it as 'a small island off of australia' #which like #it's small compared to australia #but most countries are small compared to australia #aotearoa has a greater area than the entire united kingdom #it also spans about 15° of latitude #which is 50% more than england #and also more than any US state except Alaska
"off of australia" is also a bit misleading; the distance looks small on a map, but that's because your brain is comparing it to the entire pacific ocean on the other side.
sydney (eastern coast of australia) to auckland (nz north island) is a three hour plane flight.
EXACTLY!!!!! we stretch from florida to new york if you put aotearoa on a map of the US. it's like saying "japan is a small island off the coast of china" to me
BIG!
unfortunately one of the main reasons people think we only have mountains and fields and european trees is because of the LOTR movies. smiles. those movies are fun but the reason they were filmed here is because a lot of aotearoa's native landscapes were destroyed and replaced with idyllic european landscapes 150 years ago. which made it the perfect place for a european fantasy film series. so yes there are hobbits! but at what cost!
To add onto this, back in the late 19th and early 20th century the primary goal of the colonists was to create an idyllic paradise, or an image of an imagined pre-Industrial Britain. They saw Aotearoa as a prime candidate for this project, and art that highlighted Aotearoa's natural beauty was very popular. Paintings such as the one below were used to help New Zealand's tourism industry and get Europeans to visit or migrate over here.

Tolkien lived during this time in British history, and Lord of the Rings is written with this same nostalgia for English pastoralism. The Shire is an idealized version of pre-industrial England, and many of the themes of Lord of the Rings are rooted in this early 1900s nostalgia for a pre-industrial society. So the fact that Peter Jackson's films merge these two elements is unsurprising. Compare the above painting of the Aotearoa with the following painting of Edoras, and then the film version of it.

They're all very similar in style. Now, was Peter Jackson being nefarious with this? No, I don't think so. But he is filming an adaptation of a book rooted in nostalgia for a pre-industrial Britain in a country where that very same nostalgia was used as a carrot to get British people across the world and help terraform Aotearoa into the very same image that allowed it to be the perfect setting for the films. Settlers who displace and disempower the MÄori in the process of this project.

I think Iām literally never gonna be sick of this masterpiece. I think watching it on a loop for eight hours could fix me. Dancingās what clears my soul. Dancingās what makes me whole.
I just love that this very video is an accumulation of thousands of years worth of art made by people who have never met each other. The concept of this video was so completely unfathomable to every single artist who made the sculptures and yet theyāve all put something toward the creation of it.

Do you think Clark Kent's first few major articles were about the continued presence of lead pipes in parts of Metropolis' water system
(Average Metropolis reader after investigative reporter C. Kent's 452nd article on yet another case of landlords/business owners/factories' continued use of lead pipes/paint/gas/glass knowingly exposing the public to dangerously toxic lead levels) what the fuck happened to this guy
One day Bruce Wayne mentions in an interview that heroes like Superman are overrated, as the most effective way to reduce crime is to provide public resources and improve local infrastructure, then cites how neighboring city Metropolis has effectively lowered their violent crime by 13% after addressing their outdated water system and investing low income housing. the reporter conducting the interview suddenly starts looking a little uncomfortable
To be clear, Clark is still a fantastic investigative reporter. He still has to track down the sources to prove all this shit
"Who, Clark Kent? Yeah, we're pretty sure he's a Meta. Is he a superhero? Like what, "Lead-detector guy"? "Captain pipes?" Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy and it's a handy trick, but it's lead detection, not laser vision. He's not about to go running around in tights any time soon."
I just love the idea of a cape maintaining their secret identity by pretending to be a completely different and less impressive kind of parahuman.
everyone assumes that kent is so squirrely around superheros because heās just desperately hoping not to be conscripted to the JLA to fix their plumbing

They tried to get superman to present the medal but he was offended at being called "overrated" in comparison to Clark so he declined

Betrayed and backstabbed by your scheming evil advisor? Psch. Skill issue. Absolute amateur problem. Just hire two of them and reward them for snitching on each other. Just make sure that neither of them is gay or they'll just end up hate-fucking each other and fucking you over all the same.
"hire two evil advisors but make sure neither of them is gay" are you hearing yourself right now. be serious

today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned danteās sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, danteās inferno dante, who died in 1321.
but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.
the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold danteās exile.
The objectively funniest part of this is actually that the city that holds his remains, Ravenna, refused to give his remains back. This was a ploy from florence to have his remains moved back for the tourist money and its been ongoing for a long time. Florence had a fake tomb built in the city to trick people into visiting, and have tried to force the return of the remains.
His actual caretakers have been very steadfast in keeping them hidden, moved, or generally out of reach to respect his choice in life to never, ever, ever return to florence, even when he was first offered the chance to return. This is at this point an almost millenium long feud that florence is really, really mad about losing
so basically the five people who wanted to uphold his exile were in the right
