It sucks that people are treating the Reddit blackout as a joke or assuming it's impotent rage over a minor decision bc it's Reddit when like. No, a tech company shutting down access to their API by forcing third-party devs to pay completely unreasonable fees ($12,000 per 50 million API requests, which to the largest third party clients would be tens of millions of dollars) and in the process destroying both accessibility apps and moderation tools is Bad Actually
Also, this is the death of forums part 2. Forums died in web 1 because it was more convenient to gather on larger social media platforms, like reddit. Reddit is used by a lot of people to find answers to obscure questions that are written by humans and not advertizers or bot. Now reddit is imploding, and a lot of the useful communities (like the 3d printing one) are moving to discord, which makes it impossible for non members to find the answers they need.
We need to bring forums back in a better way, where they are convenient to use and affordable to host, or we will lose the ability to find humans on the internet with answers

this is a great post. i saw a tiktok once where a trans woman argued that she didn't experience male privilege (which i agree that she does not!), but to support her argument she stated that male privilege comes from "proximity to masculinity". this always rubbed me the wrong way because it would then follow that butch women are closer to the privileged class than traditionally feminine women, which is like... obviously not true lmao. people are not punished on the basis of their failure to perform masculinity, they're punished on the basis of failing to perform as the gender they were assigned at birth based on their sex. trans women are oppressed not merely for being feminine but for rejecting manhood. trans men do not have access to male privilege on a societal level despite performing masculinity because they are still rejecting womanhood, which is what patriarchy actually wants from them. and masculine trans women probably have it worse than anyone else! masculinity is not inherently bad nor does it directly indicate social class. masculinity is often even subversive when performed by certain people. the problem is not masculinity but patriarchy

I think one of the reasons drag kings arenât as popular as drag queens, aside from the fact that straight women donât like us, is that people are uncomfortable acknowledging masculinity as a performance. Pizza was voted the 9th best thing, making it the best food. Bees weren't in the top 10 best things, but they won 77% of matchups to be selected as the best creature, followed by emperor penguins and hedgehogs. Bisexuality didn't place in the top 10 either, but it won 73% of matchups compared to heterosexuality winning only 45%. (Orgasms were the highest ranked sexual thing, and were miraculously ranked at number 69.) I think the windmill is supposed to stand for electricity, which was the second place winner. And the winner of "best thing" was sleep.

Plenty of boomers work as librarians, teachers, gardeners, and so forth, and are finding that as the cost of living skyrockets and corporations take over more and more of the world, that their salary is no longer able to support them.
And thus you have boomers - who understand how much you want to be a librarian because they also work as librarians - going bankrupt, losing their homes, drowning in debt, and dying because of unaffordable healthcare. And they get why youâre becoming an IT specialist instead of a librarian - because they! Know! That you canât survive! On a librarianâs salary anymore!
On the flip side, the rich people sucking money out of every service and person they can! Arenât! Always! Boomers! Tons of them are Gen X! And an increasing number are millennials! I havenât seen a Gen Z billionaire yet but Iâm willing to bet thereâs a couple by now!
Oh, and itâs not like they âdonât knowâ how much people want to do these sorts of jobs - they do! Thatâs how they justify underpaying people, because itâs your passion, you donât ~need~ to be paid a living wage for your passion.

As always, simultaneous truths can and do exist. Generational theory is largely bullshit... I DEFINITELY have more in common w/ the average boomer or zoomer than I do Mark Zuckerberg, who is my exact elder millennial age. AND it also can feel like âboomers did thisâ because we watch the boomers we know do really fucking stupid shit (like vote republican in blocks larger than younger generations) even when those votes are against their own self interests, contributing to the late stage capitalist hellscape killing us all. And a lot of them will talk to us as if the variables present today are the same as they were in the 70s and itâs annoying and ignorant. Whether they caused those changes or not.

I do get it. But Iâm not convinced that most people who say the former mean the latter. Iâve always thought they are trying to literally say nobody can love you âproperlyâ unless you love yourself first. Like it just isnât possible to love a person who doesnât already love themselves. Not that itâs just potentially a risk to yourself if you donât. Am I crazy? I donât know if this is just another case of me being too literal or not.Â
I think itâs both, said the same, by different people with different interpretations. I think some people may conflate âloveâ with âself-respectâ, and that makes sense.
You donât have to love yourself to be loved. However, feeling unworthy of love and respect can make you choose some things that are a form of self-harm.
Iâll give personal examples because I DEFINITELY didnât love or respect myself for a long time, and felt unworthy of healthy relationships (blame Catholic sex ed).
I was told that I would corrupt and ruin the life of a âgood manâ so I looked on purpose for the kind of controlling, angry man that would keep me away from everyone else, so I couldnât hurt anybody. I was told I was already damaged, couldnât ever make myself pure, and was useless for anything but being a whore, so I stayed with abusers, hoping and praying I could please them enough with whatever I could give them that I wouldnât be hungry or homeless.
I threw away my teens and twenties because I was taught that loving myself and respecting myself were further proof that I was an awful human being.
Part of healing from that has been learning that even on days where my depression tries to speak in the voices of my past teachers, I am worth love and respect. I do not love myself every day, but I am practicing kindness to myself. I am respecting myself. I acknowledge that I am worthy, deserving of, and rightfully have the love and respect of others, and that anyone who doesnât love or respect me isnât worth my time or attention.
I will no longer justify my abuse.
