“We weren’t necessarily trying to find actors who looked alike or had the same build; we were looking for actors who had the same feeling. [Walter Murch’s] thesis was, ‘The eyes are the window to the soul’… I thought if I could find actors with the same eyes, the audience would connect with [Chiron’s] soul.” — Barry Jenkins
I need people to stop glorifying the 4B movement in Korea, from a Western (white) perspective. Stop it.
If you are blissfully unaware of this (having not been on TikTok) - in theory, it makes sense.
No sex with men, no dating men, no child rearing with men, and no marriage with men.
But. BUT.
Feminists in Korea are problematic AF. I know this from both personal experience (having been on the receiving end of their ire online) and everything I've read about them, in Korean.
I see all these white TikTokers (and even some in the Korean diaspora) fawning over how "we" in the US need this and, no.
If your feminism is transphobic, hates gay men, hates men in general, that's not the feminism I'd endorse.
Why is Korean feminism transphobic? In 2020, Korean feminists ACTIVELY CAMPAIGNED AGAINST a woman who was accepted to Sookmyung University. An all womens' university.
But she was a woman, you say. What could be their problem?
According to Korean feminists, they didn't want a "man" in their space.
Because she is a trans woman.
This is not unusual for Korean feminists.
Having lived there for 5 years, to some extent, I understand their anger against misogyny. But if you are truly against the toxic patriarchy that exists in Korea, you must also help dismantle military conscription because that is where a lot of men become radicalized, bullied, etc etc and "grow up" to be the most toxic form of men seen on this earth.
But Korean feminists don't give AF about that and in fact, I've read a lot of them express that it's good for men to suffer.
Guess what? That view is internalized misogyny and toxic patriarchy, too.
And I don't want to hear it about the movement being so "young". Korean women have stepped up to the plate before in our history. We are capable of better than this fucking nonsense. It's a bunch of transphobic, gay hating radicals that have hijacked what was supposed to be about social justice.
WOMAD (link is to the Wikipedia article, not their site) and Megalia are the two sites they stem from. It is the most toxic group of people I've ever had the displeasure to encounter online. Any form of criticism is, at best, ignored and worst - I've been "called out" for being Korean-American, and therefore, to "butt out" of "Korean issues". Amongst other bullying I've personally received. And yes, not just on forums but on public articles that I've commented on.
I know it's a catchy title and it appeals in theory but please, please do not glorify these transphobes and TERFs. They don't deserve your attention.
You all are an utter embarrassment, both on this site and as human beings.
You've demonstrated the bullying that trans folks go through on a daily basis and it only makes me want to protect them more. The trans he, she, and theys.
The sheer audacity to attack me for calling out my own culture for being wrong.
None of you are Korean. Not a single one. And even if you were - what's wrong is wrong.
Tea-Leaf, of bubbling water and chipped porcelain ☕️🍃
Let it brew for a few minutes, the flavour is shy, and needs time to warm to you. Give it patience, and respect, and it will warm your bones, ease your pains. Smell the steam, fragrant, delicate. Feel the warmth through the cup. Even the hardiest of adventurers need a tea break.
Take a moment to rest and have a cup of warm tea :}

"I miss you, so much that I couldn't put into words. I only know that during those days and nights while I was waiting for your letters, it had felt so long and excruciating. But when I was able to read just a short line from your letter, I was delighted. Every day, I was eagerly looking forward to your letter."

Episode 3
last month my bike got stolen. i managed to grab a new bike of the same model at a pretty steep discount, but the only color they had left in stock was pink. at the time i joked: “hehe. forcefemmed by fate…”
yesterday i’m wearing a pink lacy t-shirt you can see my bra straps through (on account of it’s hot out), riding my all-pink step-through beach cruiser to the grocery store, and i park it at the bike rack, and i look over: there’s this jet black cyclist-ass city bike with all the fixin’s chained to the same rack. i think, “what a funny tableau.”
i come back out of the store with my groceries and the owner of the bike is chilling there having a sip. she is cool and athletic-looking. she is dressed as black as her bike. she says nothing as i load my groceries onto my barbie-mobile.
finally, as i unlock my bike and begin taxiing, she says: “pretty bike.”
“th-thanks,” i mumble, looking at the ground for some reason; “uh, i had a blue one but it got stolen,”—now my voice is shrinking into inaudibility—“and they only had pink in stock…”
After Bilal @bilal-salah0 reached his goal on August 1st, he contacted me to let me know that, because the Rafah crossing is still bombed and closed, he can't actually use the funds to evacuate his family right away. The funds have since been redirected toward the skyrocketing cost of living in Gaza.
His family now has to raise another €30,000 as soon as possible to sustain themselves before the Rafah crossing opens, which could be as soon as next week for all we know.
My post celebrating Bilal getting close to his original GFM goal has over 7,000 notes, yet Bilal is only bringing in €20 every hour or so, which is a sharp decline from his previous momentum.
Bilal is still struggling with his own housing insecurity in Germany and the looming threat of deportation. Despite this horror, he's put the work in to vet a handful of fundraisers, promote fundraisers, and call out scams for us. He is simply too busy to campaign for his family on his own.
I encourage everyone to donate to Bilal's family and share his campaign with people you know on other social media platforms. You can repost any of the art people have made for him and share the pictures on his gofundme.
Bilal is a valuable member of our community! Please don't let him fall through the cracks!

And the real trick to it is falling madly in love with literally everything. Gomez Addams isn’t just madly in love with Morticia, he’s madly in love with his house, with his train set, with his kids, with his brother, with his weird normie neighbors, with literally everything. Different kinds of love for each, but love all the same. For having such morbid tastes, Gomez is madly in love with life. THAT’S how you land a Morticia, by being unapologetically and madly in love with everything around you.
I often see people ask how to get started with doing this, because it seems like a daunting task to be in love with everything, when you are starting off in love with nothing, or very few things perhaps. But the answer isn’t grand or elaborate or secret. The answer is to pick something, and choose love.
And then do it again, and again, and again.
The act of being in love is just choosing love over and over.
