I was reading a Batfam fanfic and Wally was in it and it was a really cute scene with Wally and Grayson and my brain read “Ilya” instead of “Wally” 😭

Ginger ale episode 4:

In episode 4 of Heated Rivalry, Shane is only able to have a ginger ale with Ilya, showing how he is able to freely express himself with him. He doesn't feel a need to put a mask up and he doesn't need to hide his queerness with him.

When Shane is with his parents, he asks for a ginger ale and gets denied, instead having to deal with a sparkling water. Shane is still able to get a non-alcoholic drink, but it isn't his drink of choice. This can show how he is able to show a lot of himself with his parents without the need to mask or conform to social expectations. Him being denied a ginger ale shows how he wants to come out to his parents, but he feels like he can't because he himself doesn't fully understand his homosexuality(telling Ilya he still likes women and not realizing he is fully gay until episode 5).

When in the bar when he meets Rose, he orders a ginger ale and the bar tender gives him a look, so he orders the beer instead. Now, he feels the pressure to conform to the rest of the group, getting an alcoholic beverage after getting a cue that maybe he shouldn't try to be himself. He starts to mask, feeling the need to suppress larger parts of himself like his autism and homosexuality.

When in the club, he has a beer. He comes in prepared to conform with the group without trying to order a ginger ale. He's suppressing his homosexuality(In the book, Shane feels excited that he likes Rose and how it feels like a low standard but it suggests he's relieved that he can like girls) and masking his autism almost on instinct. He's knows what to expect in these group settings and knows how to act, what the expectations are and social pressures and conforms to them. That is, until he gets jump scared by his 8 year long hook-up/situationship on the dance floor with some random woman and stares at them for way too long.

TLDR; give this man a ginger ale and let him be gay.
