"I cant draw" then do it bad who gives a fuck.....
Partake in the joy of creation just for the fun of it. Just for a laff.
Me @everyone in the notes
The way you change your immediate reactions to things is that you catch yourself having an uncharitable/bigoted/overly judgmental thought and you catch it and replace it and then you do that a hundred times a day for your whole life and eventually one day like five years later you realize that you think differently now and youâll always be working on something but thatâs how life goes and thatâs fine.
I donât want to be 55 and have no trans or disabled friends left. stop dying . get up off the floor weâre surviving and experiencing new and good things or Iâll kick everyoneâs ass
and is your shame helpful? is it inspiring goodness and change? or is it keeping you frozen in time unable to move on and be everything you have expanded to be?
At some point in your life, you were taught that being slightly annoying is an unforgivable sin. Maybe it was by your parents or a teacher or a friend or a bully or an older sibling. But someone taught you that being slightly annoying is a crime punishable by death.
You must unlearn this.
You must accept that all people will be annoying at some point or another in their lives, maybe all of their lives, and that this is okay. It is okay for strangers on the bus, it is okay for children in the grocery store, it is okay for people on social media, and it is okay for you.
If you ever want to truly love your fellow humans, if you ever want to truly love yourself, you must have forgiveness for being annoying.
All the stuff you learn from your attempts at healthy coping doesn't get erased the moment you relapse. And you can use that knowledge to pick yourself back up and try again when you're ready. It's not a case of starting over from scratch, it's a case of stumbling and getting back up
Growing.
unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.
bonus it ALSO fills that dopamine hit of in-person shopping. âoh I didnât go in looking for this but hmm, Iâm tempted⌠I canât resist⌠oh ho ho I have made some irresponsible decisions at the library today [carrying my stack of ten random books]â and then it doesnât even matter if you donât like them because a) free b) youâre gonna give them back anyway
[AVOID THE TEMPTATION TO MAKE CHOICES THAT ARE FAMILIAR BUT NO LONGER SERVE YOU]
sometimes im like "wow holy shit im being really fucking annoying. i should stop talking" and then i pull out my magic 8 ball and it says "youve always been annoying and your friends chose to talk you anyways. youll be fine" and im like wow thanks magic 8 ball. and then the ogre attacks me
you arent going to be capable of any meaningful kind of solidarity with anyone if your response to new perspectives or information is to pretend you already knew.
if you cant say things like âi hadnt thought about it that wayâ or âthats a good pointâ (or even, god forbid âthanks for checking me on thatâ) when theyre appropriate, consider whether youre actually interested in developing your understanding or if youre just invested in your political self image.
I think the best advice I ever got to stop myself from getting in my head over issues i was having with a partner/friend was âAre you deciding on ultimatums in your relationship without the other persons knowledge or consent? Are you having conversations in your head where the other party is a projection you supply the responses for? If so; you have done this person a huge disservice in not allowing them to answer on their own terms. You have done so much architecture around this problem in your mind that is impenetrable for anyone who was not there when it was being built.â
That shit really changed my life and honestly? I think made me a nicer person to be around.
How is it is supposed to work: your emotions are a response to your situation and surroundings. It is OK to feel the emotion. Now take that emotion and use your logical brain to decide which parts of the emotion fit the facts of the situation and which do not and why, and how you're going to respond to said emotions (which is what tweet said, and what therapists say)
How people seem to interpret it: any emotional reaction is perfectly fine and I am not responsible for what I do out of emotion.
every post i see that's like "if you're scared of being like [bad person] that's means you're better than them and won't be like them" and it's like. lmao. my dad used to have crying sessions where he would confess his fear of being like his mother and causing me to grow up to hate him. usually after he did something fucking awful, to redirect the attention to his own pain. the girl who sexually assaulted me had panic attacks sometimes about the idea of maybe being a rapist, making it impossible to set sexual boundaries with her without her freaking out. whether you're afraid of being some kind of bad person has basically no bearing on whether you are that way
LITERALLY ANXIETY ISN'T AN INHERENTLY MORAL SOURCE OF SELF-CRITICISM. BEING AFRAID THAT YOU ARE BAD DOES NOT MAKE YOU GOOD IT JUST MAKES YOU ANXIOUS!!!
#as a person with anxiety I find anxiety is often counterproductive to self-reflection#because youâre too busy spiraling over Bad Thing You Did to actually do anything about it#you need to break that tunnel vision in order to actually make the change#i donât like to sit with my anxieties for that reason#sitting there feeling guilty over what I did doesnât do any good#it just made me and anyone I hurt feel worse#striving for actual change and making amends is the best way forward#but you have to break the doom spiral in order to be clearheaded enough to do that#sa tw
literally you get it.
"Fear of being one of The Bad Ones" and "seeing The Bad Ones as The Other" are also an engine that maintains black-and-white morality for a person. Both maintain that morality and ethics aren't just things cleanly failed. They also suggest one must be detached from humanity in some fundamental way to fail.
In tandem, this is self-protective and learned helplessness for the thinker. And where white fragility is concerned, the order of operations goes something like this:
You are a Good Person. This makes you immune to perpetuating racism because you're not A Racist â thus, you're not a Bad Person.
For somebody to suggest you are enacting racism, then, is an attack on both your person and your personhood.
But a Bad Person cannot or will not feel remorse for their badness. So your fear and defensiveness over input is proof you are a Good Person.
Should you accept you've done a bad thing, your priority is then to stop being a Bad Person. Where you say "you're doing the work", what happens is public self-flagellation.
The behavior is not addressed. Re-earning your imagined Good Person status is the same as not perpetuating racism, afterall.
If you're not granted the safety of your Good Person status, helplessness sets in. Being a Bad Person is just what you are.
The anxiety and guilt are thus all that's left. "Redemption" seems unreachable because you're so far gone when in reality, redemption was never part of it.
It's a self-perpetuating cycle.
Interesting-but-important side note: this all also only works if you think of things like bigotry or abusiveness as discreet events. They aren't. These are patterns of behaviors. Like, abusers and their victims struggle to call it what it is because "they're not always like that!". "I'm-not-racist-but" white folks balk when told they're being racist. What all of these people miss is that nobody is one thing all the time. Cops have friends, fascists have families, and billionaires have hobbies.
Every fucking one of us contains multitudes, and morality is muddy. You need to internalize that both for your sake, and the sake of others.
