Spider Myth: You are never more than 10 feet from a spider at any given time!
Here I am, your noble spider knight, debunking a few myths for you.
This myth is actually due to the misinterpretation of a quote from a famous arachnologist:
“Wherever you sit as you read these lines, a spider is probably no more than a few yards away.”
This may already be debatable, but eh. “A few yards” is pretty vague. But a year after that article was published, an exhibit in Honolulu commented:
“Scientists estimate we’re never more than three feet from a spider. That’s because some are microscopic, and actually live RIGHT ON YOU.”
Wow. Okay. I think you mean dust mites, which aren’t spiders, but okay. And then yet another three years after that, the following quote was published in a book:
“Wherever you are, there is a spider within a meter of you.”
…which was followed two years after that with:
“Even in Manhattan, you are never more than three feet from a spider.”
“You’re probably within seven or eight feet of a spider, no matter where you are.”
Where did this all go wrong???
As for the truth of this one, it depends on where you are, really. If you’re in the middle of an open field, chances are you’re standing right on top of one. If you’re standing in a concrete parking lot, you might go several meters until you encounter another spider – maybe until the next building or light post! If you’re in a plane at night, you’ll be many thousands of miles from one, since spiders don’t balloon at night.
It may also depend on the season, as spiders tend to seek shelter indoors during winter. Geographically, if you’re in a tropical environment, you may be surrounded by spiders. Whereas if you’re on the arctic tundra you may not find a trace of spiders for miles around. If you’re on a boat in the middle of the ocean, you’ll be free of spiders unless you happen to have a hitchhiker on your vessel.
So in conclusion, there are some instances where there is a spider ten feet exactly from where you are. There are also some instances where you are standing right on top of a spider. There are, however, many instances where there isn’t a spider to be found anywhere near you.
Now you know.
Your Noble Spider Knight, ~Sir P. Audax

call me Brussels Sprouts the way I got the bitterness bred out of me
the joke is Brussels Sprouts used to be much more bitter until farmers in the 90's discovered what chemical property in Brussels Sprouts was making them so bitter, and selectively bred them over generations to be tastier, which is why you should try eating Brussels Sprouts again if you haven't had them since you were a kid, especially if you've never had them roasted in olive oil, salt, red pepper flakes, maybe a little honey or balsamic vinegar, distributed evenly on a pan at a very high temperature, and also breeding kink
Hey op what was that last part
Did i fucking stutter
IS THIS WHY THEY TASTE DIFFERENT THAN THEY DID WHEN I WAS A KID
Because of the breeding kink? Maybe
Excuse me because of what

I love how Zohran Mamdani is wearing a suit everywhere. And if he has anything else he puts it ON TOP of the suit. A basketball jersey. A high-vis vest. All worn over the suit. He’s like the mayor character in a cartoon who’s always dressed as The Mayor. If I didn’t know who he was and he biked past me in NYC I’d be like holy shit was that the mayor
he jumped in a pool in the suit yesterday to celebrate the public pools opening for the summer btw

Bosses and Coworkers: you've got a great work ethic, going above and beyond
Me: I am literally just doing my job. Everyone else is slacking off.
Everyone Else: (magically knows somehow the secret amounts of work the boss is actually asking of them, which the boss cannot tell anyone for Reasons)
There always seems to be a gap in instructions (from bosses, parents, teachers, friends, whoever) between 'required' and 'expected', and this gap is:
invisible
never explained
always a different size
you have to guess the size
if you guess wrong you either get Praised or In Trouble
At least on 'the price is right' you know (because someone *actually told you*) that you are playing a guessing game and that there is an over/under mechanic and that the conquence of guessing wrong isn't a punishment or damaged relationship or getting fired
On an unrelated note my psychiatrist has given me a referal for a formal ASD evaluation

Before you are two magic buttons. Button A: you will never have to clean your kitchen again (dishes are automatically done; floor swept and mopped; etc). Button B: you will never have to clean your bathroom again (toilet & sink & tub/shower cleaned and sanitized; etc) Which button do you push?
A
B
So many comments, many of them wise and all of them heartfelt, and yet nobody has thought to add ...
the fridge-freezer is in the kitchen. Not only are there dishes every day, not only are there food preparation surfaces of various kinds every day, not only are there crumbs and odds and ends that fall on the floor every day ... but the fridge-freezer is in the kitchen. The oven is in the kitchen, the food cupboards are in the kitchen, and above all THE KITCHEN BIN IS IN THE KITCHEN.
I mean, it's not like the bathroom is all sweetness and light, but seriously! Who in their right mind is choosing the bathroom?!?!?!?
Ils sont fous, ces Romains tumblrains.
Having a magically-self-cleaning bathroom would be cool, but it wouldn't dramatically change my lifestyle.
If I could cook or bake whatever the hell I wanted, knowing that all my pots and mixing bowls and baking sheets would just zap themselves clean when I finished? If I knew that I could spill batter or grease inside the oven or burn things onto baking racks and it would just go away? I would be making delicious shit constantly.

A HAMMERHEAD????
I attended a campfire presentation by a park ranger who described Osprey as "both the pickiest and least picky eaters of all time."
They're the pickiest because they only eat things they can catch by plunging into at least six feet of water feet-first and are as close to their maximum carrying capacity as possible, to maximize calories-per-trip.
They're the Least Picky because so long as something fits those parameters, Osprey will go for it.
The ranger then showed us an extensive slide show of the local osprey in flight with their catches, which included: trout, carp, snakes, bass, eels, small sharks, ducks, surprisingly large catfish, a nerf football, muskrats, a summer sausage that fell off a boat, sneakers, a fish previously thought to be extinct in the area, a Barbie Doll, and another osprey.
"a fish previously thought to be extinct in the area"
Ranger: Welp, guess it wasn't... but it might be, now.
seeing straight men be disgusted by booktok smut recommenders has actually radicalized me to the side of booktok smut recommenders. girls your taste may be atrocious but i will never disparage you for exposing mainstream discourse to the concept of soaking through your underwear. spent my whole life listening to men talk about penises it’s about time they get jumpscared by women talking about pussy in crude detail on social media. go forth and goon my warriors
I work at a bookstore and hearing one of my male coworkers call smutty romantasy "the downfall of society" because it's "literally just porn" radicalized me
Men have an entire industry. Entire industries dedicated to their sexualities. Let women have fantasy sex. there's not even a camera crew involved.
Left this in the notes
