Why is it that every time I google something like "Are olives poisonous to cats" the top results are always like "Fun fact: Cats are carnivores! This means that they eat meat. There is no reason to include olives in a cat's diet. You should feed your cat cat food, which is dry or wet food especially designed for cats. You can purchase this at a store." like is there a single person alive on the planet who's googled "Are blueberry muffins safe for cats" because they're planning on switching their cat to a muffin-only diet??? No, I'm asking because the little bastard somehow popped open the packet while I was putting away the groceries and dragged one under the couch before I could react and now I need to know if I should call the after-hours vet. "Cats should not eat spaghetti." NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!!!! "Try to keep human food away from cats." i live in a studio apartment with a completely silent and permanently hungry apex predator who has the intelligence of a toddler and the desperate Machiavellian cunning of a creature who spent his formative months on the streets. He can already open doors and he is this 👌 close to learning how to open the microwave. He is stronger than me and covered in knives. So im gonna do my best but for the moment i just need you to tell me whether this yoghurt is going to kill my son y/n
I've been using the pet poison hotline's poison list cause it has a search function. It also tells you whether something is mildly, moderately, or severely toxic which can be very handy! It doesn't contain like everything but it might be a good place to start, it also includes plants for fellow houseplant lovers <3
Explore Pet Poison Helpline®s vast knowledge on poisons by reviewing our pet poison list. Explore our top 10 poison and holiday poison lists
For plants specifically, there’s also a wildly detailed set of posts and listings about toxicity on the old, wonderful, Plants Are the Strangest People blog

“this character did not act in the most objectively logical way possible!” is not ! actually valid literary criticism
i have trust that the media literacy enjoyers will find this one idk
((Strawman spotted! The objection isn't so much 'people not behaving in the most logical way possible' especially in contexts where rational thought tends to falter, it's 'people acting in a braindead manner' especiallly when it *also* happens to run against said natural impulses.. For a counterexample, see, for instance, Clive Barker's short story from Books of Blood v. 3 , Son of Celluloid. The protagonist, a part of the crew of a movie theatre, finds her colleague injured and not very responsive after he's gone to check on a missing moviegoer in the bathrooms. Her first impulse is to go check, then she stops, decides she's not a moron to walk into a Situation like a cliche horror movie Female Victim and goes to call the cops. Needless to say, that was the point where she became my favourite character and I was glued to the book seeing if she'd make it))
I really like this russian edition of classic books. Letting famous artists do the covers in YA style was such a simple but clever decision. According to the recent study the number of teenage readers increased, possibly thanks to these covers. I own traditional classics with blank covers but if I ever see one of these in the wild, it’ll probably make me go feral.

Since we are here might as well share the dhoti and the lungi

It’s only men in the photos but really anyone can wear them. I am wearing a lungi right now.
I also know Thailand and Sri Lanka have their versions of a lungi as well.
It feels cool to be "in" on celebrity gossip before anyone else. I ran into Californian Condor V9 and looked her up on the condor lookup website. It says her current mate is dead and she has no kids but I saw her with a new man AND a juvenile.
OP I hope you don't mind but I made a tabloid cover out of this
I used two more condor photos by Andrew Orr and Alam Clampitt from peregrinefund.org
Gotta use the skills I learned from making tabloids out of the Jane Austen novels somewhere right?
Great, now I feel like I'm bird shaming. Congrats V9 on your new family!
This is art to me
As far as I’m concerned, the single most radical change from journal fandom is the idea that fandom is primarily a space for kids.
*shakes cane* in MY day, teen fans pretended to be adults while we walked uphill both ways!
#tumblr: i GUESS we’ll tolerate these gross old women LIKE OVER 25 UGH as long as they understand that fandom isn’t /for/ them
#lj: HOW DO YOU DO FELLOW ADULTS
#on LJ it was very clear that when you were underage#YOU were the one sneaking into the adult club#now everyone’s acting like the adults are invading prom night
Also getting in my feelings a bit, may the leopards not go hungry.

I think creating an engaging Eilistraee priestess (at least those that converted from Lolth) means needing to acknowledge that at some point in the past that character was likely deeply abusive and if not active in the harm of others than complicit in it. I think a lot of people sort of mythologize the abuse their characters enacted in the positions they had as Lolth worshipping priestesses, and if they do acknowledge it don't tend to actually let the narrative tackle that or sit with it. I think that those actions SHOULD come back to haunt them. There should be people that they've hurt, or people that knew the people they hurt. Does the fact that they've found a kinder faith erase the harm they did to those they did it to? How does she handle being confronted with the reprocussions of the harm she caused, especially once in a place where she's grown. I think these are interesting questions to play with. I think its very easy to place more emphasis on the catalyst that drove them from the church (often the most tragic point in their story, which paints them as a victim) but i also think its important to highlight and toy with the tragedies THEY caused other people.
Likewise, by contrast, I think making an engaging Lolth Worshipping priestess involves giving her things to humanize her. I think its very easy to create a character that is just evil for the sake of being evil, but that it's more interesting to pressure the audience into confronting the larger societal structures that places people into positions in which they enact harm. I don't think lolth priestesses are particularly interesting when they're just sexy Girl Boss Manipulators, I think that to some degree they should be a little tragic. But I also don't think the tragedy of the situation takes away from the abuse they inflict. What are the things that, if they had different circumstances, could have led them to leaving the church. Y'know. Am I making sense.
random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google
I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.
also a waaayyyyy better sense of design than duckduckgo
also private, European based, least annoying search I've used lately (RIP old "don't be evil" Google)
Keeping a list of Google alternatives just in case…
i have one of those, scraped from multiple different rec posts:
Search Engines
Infinity Search is an alternative search engine with a special focus on privacy
DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine for those who value their privacy and are put off by the thought of their every query being tracked and logged. Uses bangs, ![site] for in-page search (sells your data to microsoft and draws from fucking bing)
WolframAlpha is a privately owned search engine that allows you to “compute expert-level answers using Wolfram’s breakthrough algorithms, knowledgebase, and AI technology.” A data search engine.
Boardreader is a search engine for forums and message boards. It allows you to search forums and then filter down results by date and language.
Based in France, Qwant is a privacy-based search engine that won’t record your searches or use your personal details for advertising. Uses “&” as a bang search.
Another privacy-based search engine is Search Encrypt, which uses local encryption to ensure that users’ identifiable information cannot be tracked. Metasearch across multiple engines.
Offering unbiased results from several sources, SearX is a metasearch engine that aims to present a free, decentralized view of the internet. Can be self-hosted.

https://search.marginalia.nu/ an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed. Use old-school searching rather than query-based for the best results.
https://www.mojeek.com/
https://wiby.me/ - It’s goal is to index as many personalized websites as possible, and NOT commercial sites.
https://4get.ca/ it works a lot like SearX, but honestly better. It doesn’t have its own index, but pulls from many others. I think it’s the best for research, since it allows you to search for answers from different indexes, is easy to configure, add free, and avoids censorship as much as it can.
