we need fewer songs about falling in love and breaking up and MORE songs about famous disasters of the sea
being told you’d cruise the seas for american gold you’d fire no guns, shed no tears, now you’re a broken man on a halifax pier might not be a universal experience, but like neither is the club. so a little perspective might be nice
And I think we've all faced the feeling that we've lost all hope, and might really benefit from an encouragement to rise again, rise again, though your heart it be broken, or life about to end. No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend, like the Mary Ellen Carter rise again... that might resonate
Life cannot merely be preserved. It must be lived.

update: i’ve made it through the user manual and have sewn myself a cravat. the sewing machine is a delicate breed of horse with anger in its motion and spite in its heart.

“Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?” ― Terry Pratchett, Going Postal
I am high-key in love with the fact that Sir Terry, who wrote that line about a man not being dead, will quite likely be the first person whose name actually never stops being spoken, and it will always be accompanied with GNU, even if people forget what that part means
In case people do t know what it means, it comes from his books, where there is what is called the Clacks - a series of towers that send messages very fast by means of marks. It’s like the love child of the semaphore and the telegraph.
Encoded messages visible from one tower to the next, with header codes that are instructions of what to do with the message. Keep it going until a certain location, spread it to all locations, send it all the way down the line and stop it at then end, send it down and back.
It has a part called the Overhead, which is mostly internal messages that never leave the towers. And the creator of the tower, when his son dies due to an accident on one, puts his son’s name in the Overhead with specific headers, G and N and U:
G: send the message on
N: do not log the message
U: turn the message around at the end of the line and send it back again

Singer Sargent + The Last Binding ☆
This is very random but when I was at the Tate last summer I found a book of Singer Sargent portraits, and because I’m always thinking about TLB, I remembered the mention that the Blyth parents had Singer Sargent do a portrait of Robin and Maud’s mother. Robin notes in particular that she’s painted with her hand hidden beneath folds of skirt. I like to think that this first painting is of Lady Blyth - elegantly dressed and subtly smug.
THEN I found his portrait of two children that perfectly matches how I imagined young Robin and Maud; perfectly poised but unhappy and untrusting of the painter their parents have brought into their house yet again.

Write it shitty, write it scared, write it without a clue but don't you be so spineless and have an AI write fanfic for you.
i just don’t think “is dude gender neutral” is that productive of a conversation because a word can be gendered and still used regardless of gender. i call my male friends girlypop and my female friends man but i don’t think anybody would agree that those are somehow not gendered terms.
the real question is just “would you be willing to apologize and stop using a word if somebody told you it made them uncomfortable?” the answer to which in a surprising number of cases is no mostly because it seems like overall ppl r more upset abt getting accused of transphobia than they are abt being transphobic
not using AI genuinely feels like the rest of the world is experiencing some kind of mass amnesia. if someone says they never use it, the immediate response is that can't be true because "everyone" uses it to write their emails or answer their questions. saw a comment suggesting that not using chatgpt to write an essay is "like the 90s". girl I graduated in 2021 and we weren't doing that! how is it that everyone has suddenly forgotten that they were entirely capable of doing these things all by themselves for their entire lives up until the past few years!! am I going crazy!!!
