post-cottage ilya, still in boston, quietly building an archive to shane in every stolen moment they get together. a scrap of paper from a hotel notepad with shane’s game tape thoughts written in a hurried scrawl. a hotel key from a room ilya barely remembers other than the fact that shane was there. the travel-sized body wash shane left in ilya’s bathroom. ilya keeps meaning to throw them away. he knows how it looks. but ottawa is still so far, and shane is still gone more often than he is near, and ilya is tired of only having him in fragments. and then one day shane goes digging through ilya’s bag for a hoodie and finds all of it shoved into a zipper pocket. and he just stares. ilya waits for the lecture, the little downward twist of his mouth. shane telling him, ilya, you can’t have stuff like this. instead he just looks down at the note in his hand, thumb moving over his own handwriting. like he can picture ilya folding it up, keeping it, making a place for it among the other stupid, useless, holy things.
