Munchausen by proxy is a syndrome characterised by a compulsive need to fabricate disease in one's child. True crime series The Act portrayed the relationship between Dee Dee Blanchard, who was afflicted by this condition, and her daughter Gypsy Rose, who ended up convincing her boyfriend to murder her mother in 2015. How does a parent end up subjecting one's own child to unnecessary medical treatments, inflicting immense pain? What psychological processes lead to such situation?
