Narlily: ‘Why? Because I love you!’
Link to prompt list is here
(Just pretend that Narcissa is in the same year as Lily)
Narcissa and Lily were quite good friends for a Pureblood Slytherin and a Muggleborn Gryffindor. They didn’t care about that, they were friends.
They loved each other. And I mean they loved each other. And they both thought it was unrequited.
Lily was in love with Narcissa, and Narcissa was in love with Lily. But they’d never admit that to each other.
There was few people that knew about it. Lily had told Marlene, Mary, Dorcas and Remus about it, and they had sworn not to tell anyone. And Narcissa had confined in her eldest sister, who had fallen for a muggleborn too.
“You should tell her.” Andromeda had written in the letter, among other things. Andromeda had made sure not to include her blood status, name, or anything suggest that Narcissa was in love with her, just in case anyone was reading over her shoulder.
Lily was getting tired of this. The constant pretending that she didn’t have feelings for her.
So, when she heard the familiar voice of James Potter as she was walking to the library with Dorcas, she decided to actually pay attention for once.
“Oi! Evans!” James called out. The redhead shot her head around, and saw the four marauders behind her.
“What do you want Potter?” Lily rolled her eyes at him, and tightened her grip around the Potions book in her hand.
“Hogsmeade? This weekend?” James raised his eyebrow, smirking at her. It had been like this since 2nd year, the constant asking. She was surprised he hadn’t got bored of her yet.
Lily weighed her options. Say no, and spend the rest of her life pining over the girl she could never have. Or finally agree to the dark-haired boy’s advances, and maybe grow to like him. Yeah, it was a bit selfish, but she it was better than the other option.
“Sure. I’ll meet you in the courtyard.” Lily shrugged, with a smug smile on her face.
All of the marauders, including James himself, had the wide eyed expression on their faces.
However, some for different reasons.
Sirius and Peter, who couldn’t believe that the redhead girl had finally agreed to the date.
James, who was shocked the most, couldn’t believe this luck. That this time she’s agreed.
And Remus. Who thought she was in love with the Pureblood girl from Slytherin.
“Uh... Okay, then.” James responded, as he asked himself if it was a dream.
Lily and Dorcas continued to walk, and as soon as they got around the corner, Dorcas pulled her to the side.
“Why’d you say yes to James?” Dorcas demanded to know, raising her eyebrows and crossing her arms over her chest.
Lily shrugged once again, then sighed. “He’s been in love with me since second year. And it’s not like the person I’d love to be with actually wants to be with me.”
Before Dorcas could respond, the familiar face of Remus Lupin came around the corner, and turned to the two, shocked at the interaction he’d witnessed a minute before.
“What the hell just happened there?” Remus asked her. “Padfoot sent me to check if you were still sane.”
“I’m perfectly sane, Remus.” Lily informed him. “Just realising that I’m never going to get over Narcissa, because I’ll always love her, and if I never agreed to him, I’ll be alone forever.”
“You’re in love with Narcissa?” The voice of Peter Pettigrew sounded, and three heads turned to the short boy’s direction.
“Fuck.” Was all Remus could say.
“Yeah...” Lily trailed off, trying to avoid direct eye contact with him. “Please don’t tell anyone.”
“Well, Lily, it’s safe to say that you’re fucked.” Remus stated. “Peter cannot keep a secret to save his life.”
“I can too!” Peter argued, standing his ground. “I didn’t tell James when I caught you and Padfoot-‘’
Dorcas and Lily’s eyes widened as Remus’s hand flew to cover Peter’s mouth.
Remus sighed and removed his hand when he realised it was hopeless.
“Peter caught you and Sirius doing what exactly?” Dorcas questioned, smirking, and raising an eyebrow in his direction.
“Shut up.” Remus hissed in her direction, then spoke up. “If we’re talking about getting caught, what about when I caught you and Marlene going at it in the broom closet on my rounds.”
Dorcas’s eyes widened, and Lily averted her eyes to look at her best friend.
“Looking for a book in the library, huh?” Lily questioned, and Dorcas shoved her playfully.
Lily had avoided Narcissa the whole week leading up to the Hogsmeade trip, and Narcissa didn’t know why.
She suspected it had something to do with the huge secret she was hiding for her, but how on earth could Lily know?
Narcissa approached Lily as she was walking towards the Gryffindor Common Room after her patrols.
“Lily.” Narcissa hissed in her direction, not particularly wanting to be caught at Gryffindor Tower at that time of night.
Lily turned around, and spotted the blonde hiding behind a statue. Lily sighed. She had to tell her.
Narcissa beckoned the redhead over to her, and pulled her into a nearby corridor, casting a spell so no one would hear their conversation.
“Are you okay?” Was what Narcissa asked first. “You’ve been avoiding me all week. Did I do something?”
No, you didn’t do anything. You’re perfect, and I love you. Is what Lily desperately wanted to tell her.
“You didn’t do anything.” Lily shook her head. “I just needed some time to... Think.”
“Think about what?” The Slytherin asked her, tilting her head to the side, and trying to read the look on the freckled face.
“I have a date, this weekend.” Lily states. She realised that she was frowning, and she should be smiling, so she plastered a fake smile onto her face.
Narcissa’s heart broke. Torn into a million pieces. Scattered in the wind, never to be put together again. Yes, she saw it coming, but wanted more time with her.
“With who?” Narcissa asked her.
“James Potter.” Lily answered.
When the blonde didn’t think her heart could break anymore, it did. James Potter. She couldn’t have picked someone else.
“James Potter?!” Narcissa questioned, annoyed. She didn’t want to give a reaction, but she couldn’t help it. “Are you joking?!”
“Why do you care who I’m going on a date with?!” Lily shot back, crossing her arms over her chest, slightly annoyed, but also slightly confused to why she actually cared that much. Maybe because their families hated each other.
“Why? Because I love you!”
Narcissa didn’t mean to blurt it out, but she did, and immediately regretted it when she saw the wide-eyes on her friends face.
Then she walked away, leaving Lily there, stunned.
Narcissa was mortified as she walked quickly back to the dungeons, which was a long walk, seeing as she was at Gryffindor Tower.
She’d seen the look on Lily’s freckled face, and knew that she’d lost a friend forever.
Lily immediately ran to the Common Room, went through the portrait hole, and ran into her dormitory.
The door swang open, slamming on the wall, waking Alice, Dorcas, Mary and Marlene all up.
Lily noticed that Marlene was in Dorcas’s bed, but chose to ignore it for the minute.
“What the hell, Lily?” Mary groaned. She turned over in the bed, blocking the sound with her other pillow.
“Narcissa just told me she loves me.” Lily announced, and Mary shot up from her previous position in her bed.
“She what?!” Dorcas questioned, wide eyed. “How’d that even happen?”
“I told her that I had a date with James, and then she got all bothered. I asked her why and she told me it was because she loves me. Then she legged it, and I don’t know what to do.” Lily told them, as she walked over to her bed and collapsed onto it.
“Well, obviously, you’ve gotta tell her you love her back.” Alice chimed in.
“Yeah.” Marlene nodded. “But, seeing as your date with James is tomorrow, you better tell him, so you don’t have to go on that.”
“You’re right.” Lily nodded towards the ceiling. “I feel bad. It’s gonna break his heart.”
It didn’t break his heart.
“I guess the Black family have sort of an effect on us.” James had said. Lily looked at him confused.
“I only asked you, because Padfoot was getting suspicious of me spending time with his brother, and I hadn’t really acted on my ‘undying love’ for you in a while. I never expected you to say yes.” James explained.
“So, you like Sirius’s brother?” Lily questioned. James nodded. “That makes this whole thing a lot easier.”
Lily approached Narcissa in the hall the next day, after hyping herself up for a while.
“Can I talk to you?” Lily asked her. Narcissa hesitated, but nodded, and was pulled into the empty Charms classroom.
“Okay, I get what you’re trying to tell me, I wouldn’t want to be friends with me either after that. So I won’t talk to you again, and we’ll just put this whole thing behind us-‘’
Lily kissed her, she didn’t expect to in that moment. She pulled away, and observed the blonde’s shocked face.
