first incidence of good writing advice i've seen in 10+ years on this platform and it's in the notes of a mustelid wreaking absolute havoc in a german grocery store
What to do if you suddenly find yourself homeless
FOOD
Find your nearest food bank or mission, for food
grocery stores with free samples, bakeries + stores with day-old bread
different fast food outlets have cheaper food and will generally let you hang out for a while.
some dollar stores carry food like cans of beans or fruit
SHELTER
Sleeping at beaches during the day is a good way to avoid suspicion and harassment
sleep with your bag strapped to you, so someone can’t steal it
Some churches offer short term residence
Find your nearest homeless shelter
Look for places that are open to the public
A large dumpster near a wall can often be moved so that flipping up the lids creates an angled shelter to stay dry
HYGIENE
A membership to the YMCA is usually only 10$, which has a shower, and sometimes laundry machines and lockers.
Public libraries have bathrooms you can use
Dollar stores carry low-end soaps and deodorant etc.
Wet wipes are all purpose and a life saver
Local beaches, go for a quick swim
Some truck stops have showers you can pay for
Staying clean is the best way to prevent disease, and potentially get a job to get back on your feet
Pack 7 pairs of socks/undies, 2 outfits, and one hooded rain jacket
OTHER
first aid kit
sunscreen
a travel alarm clock or watch
mylar emergency blanket
a backpack is a must
downgrade your cellphone to a pay as you go with top-up cards
sleeping bag
travel kit of toothbrush, hair brush/comb, mirror
swiss army knife
can opener
Reblog to literally save a life
if there is a Dollar Tree near you, they have entire food aisles
Planet Fitness also has $10 memberships. you can shower and they have free food days! pizza night 1st monday every month, bagel tuesday the 2nd tuesday every month.
Save a life reblog
i am so glad that i renblogged this however so long ago. i saw this post and shared it with others in mind, but now i am the one who really needs this. id like to think of this as good karma i guess
also a good list if anyone ever needs to run away from home for whatever reason.
probably worth keeping around.
i am shrunken down and brought to the gnome world and when i attempt to assimilate to their culture I use an acorn cap as a hat and they all laugh cheerfully at my silly mistake of wearing what they use as a bowl like a cap and though this is a transgression that would have humiliated me in my human life I am instead laughing alongside them at my humorous misunderstanding
they ask me what I would like to eat and knowing that gnomes enjoy fruit i ask for my favorite fruit, an apple, and they all laugh raucously and say that i must be very hungry indeed to desire an entire apple rather than just a small chunk, and i go along with their joke and say that while my body may have shrank my stomach has not! and they all guffaw with delight until their faces turn red and see that my request is met and we all sit around a toadstool and share many apple slices together
over my time spent with the gnomes, my antics are still regarded with much delight. though i am past the age in which i am confused by their customs and norms, i occasionally pretend to be clueless about simple and easily understood things, such as shock at how toads are as tall as I am. they all continue to laugh at my feigned surprise, and sometimes join in, asking me if I need any help distinguishing what berries are for eating and which are for painting. i laugh, too. there is a sense of grace that comes with my shortcomings amongst the gnomes. they are entertained by my misunderstandings, yes, because life is to short to not be jolly.
i wake up one morning back at my original size. the small cavern in the roots of a tree that i lived in is destroyed in my sleep. my clothes, tailored from cut-up scraps of fabric, are shredded around me. i am a human again. i am horribly embarrassed.
the gnomes of the community gather around where i sit, all looking at me and exchanging glances with each other, none of them speaking the obvious. i can no longer stay here, now that i am not their size. but i was part of their community. i became one of them, indistinguishable from these people only from my past. how am i supposed to return to the world of the humans now? there is no life left for me there. that is not a life where i may fish for minnows in a babbling brook and feast off a bounty of raspberries. i am distraught. i cry.
my community comforts me. friends, all minuscule to me now, pat me wherever they can reach, nimbly dodging the tears that fall from my face. one of them offers me water. they don't have any containers that are big enough for me, they apologize, so just this acorn cap filled with morning dew will have to suffice.
i take the acorn cap and look at it in my hands. it is so small now. with a sniff, i put it atop my head.
the gnome chuckles. then laughs. then bends at the waist, bellowing with laughter, supporting himself on my knee. then i am laughing too, face red, tears still falling, and my community of gnomes laughs with me as well, so loud that a flock of birds takes off in the distance, and i am still laughing even as i stand to my feet and lumber away, back to where i once came.
Something that I first applied to working with children, and have applied in a limited form to working with adults: you don't need to tell someone when they read your instructions wrong. Sometimes it's enough to point out what they did right and then whatever they didn't do? You ask them to do it in more precise words, and you make it sound like it's a new request. Remarkable how fast things get done this way.
This is also a habit I built up from emergency response training. If I say "I need you to bring me a first aid kit and an accident report" and you bring me just a first aid kit, it's so much more efficient to say "thanks now can you bring me an accident report" than "I asked you to bring an accident report why didn't you bring me one".
Once you've internalized "a person bleeding out is one of the worst times to start an argument" you start to wonder what other tasks could get accomplished without arguing
this is excellent proof of how cops train each other to think. merely wearing protection against possible cop violence IS an escalation in their view. like how dare you prepare for me to become unhinged, now my repeated violations of the geneva convention are your fault >:(
History's Mysteries
Hydnora africana, commonly known as Jackal Food, is a fascinating subterranean plant native to the arid regions of South Africa. Despite its monstrous appearance and lack of visible leaves, roots, or chlorophyll, it thrives as a parasitic plant, relying on neighboring host plants for nutrients.
This peculiar plant has a unique reproductive strategy. Its flowers take nearly a year to emerge from the ground, and when they do, they emit a foul scent reminiscent of feces or rotting flesh to attract pollinators, primarily beetles. The flower’s structure, resembling a fleshy bowl with tooth-like structures, helps trap and temporarily imprison these pollinators, ensuring successful pollination.
Despite its unappealing scent and appearance, Hydnora africana produces edible berries that are surprisingly delicious when baked over an open fire. These berries also have practical uses beyond consumption. They have been utilized for preserving fishnets, tanning leather, and even as an acne treatment when infused into face wash.
an acquaintance told me i had the subtle guardedness of someone who “learned social skills the hard way” and i’d honestly have much preferred they took out a gun and shot me
Inmates being put to work does NOT SAVE ANYONE TAX DOLLARS you are still paying exorbitant amounts of taxes to the prison industrial complex, almost all of which goes into these corporations pockets, btw—-not spent on prisoners.
I don’t know about any of y’all, but I would so much rather my tax money go to actually rehabilitating people and finding ways to keep them out of incarceration, rather than an entire industry set up around getting people to recidivate and return to prison time and time again, just so that prison industrial complex can pocket even MORE of my tax money.
for any wondering how this affects you the not yet in prison population, slave labor takes jobs out of the economy and depresses all labors value. in real terms they are picking your pocket.
Holy shit. The Israeli whistleblower story CNN just broke is insane. I cannot believe what I’m reading
Rare firsthand accounts by Israeli whistleblowers cast light on the horrific conditions in the Sde Teiman torture camp in Naqab Desert. Palestinians are stripped down, blindfolded, forced in diapers, and forbidden from speaking. They are subjected to beatings and mental degradation regularly. So much depravity that has gone unseen. Doctors performing procedures outside of their expertise, amputations due to zip-typing of abductees’ wrists, having large dogs unleashed on them at night. Being fed food through straws. I can’t believe it. I am truly in shock. And this is just one whistleblower accounting of this. Who knows what else is happening beyond our knowledge
My heart is breaking into a million pieces
Worth mentioning that multiple Palestinians have recounted these stories before, as direct victims detailing their experiences. What's unique about these accounts from CNN Israeli whistle-blower is that they're from an Israeli, therefore people are more likely to take this seriously.

This evening, Israeli residents set fire twice to the perimeter of the UNRWA Headquarters in occupied East Jerusalem.
This took place while UNRWA and other UN Agencies’ staff were on the compound.
While there were no casualties among our staff, the fire caused extensive damage to the outdoor areas. The UNRWA headquarters has on its grounds a petrol and diesel station for the Agency’s fleet of cars.
Our director with the help of other staff had to put out the fire themselves as it took the Israeli fire extinguishers and police a while before they turned up.
A crowd accompanied by armed men were witnessed outside the compound chanting “Burn down the United Nations” (see video below 👇 from Israeli media).
This is an outrageous development. Once again, the lives of UN staff were at a serious risk.
In light of this second appalling incident in less than a week, I have taken the decision to close down our coumpound until proper security is restored.
Over the past two months, Israeli extremists have been staging protests outside the UNRWA compound in Jerusalem, called by an elected member of the Jerusalem municipality.
This week, the protest became violent when demonstrators threw stones at UN staff and at the buildings of the compound.
Over the past months, UN staff have regularly been subjected to harassment and intimidation. Our compound has been seriously vandalized and damaged.
On several occasions, Israeli extremists threatened our staff with guns.
It is the responsibility of the State of Israel as an occupying power to ensure that United Nations personnel and facilities are protected at all times.
UN staff, premises and operations should be protected at all times in line with international law.
I call on all those who have influence to put an end to these attacks and hold all those responsible accountable.
The perpetrators of these attacks must be investigated and those responsible must be held accountable.
Anything less will set a new dangerous standard.
-Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner general of UNRWA
The US initiatied the global halt in funding of UNRWA based on flimsy allegations against 12 employees that that have not been backed up by a single point of evidence since Israel originally made the accusation months ago. While most countries have resumed UNRWA funding in the face of the Israeli engineered famine in Gaza which a fully funded UNRWA would have had a better chance at preventing, the US (which was one of its biggest funders) continues to refuse to resume funding, lending legitimacy in Israel for attacks like this.
harsh truth: Boomers just showed up
as in showed up to a place
asked hey you hiring and if they were then
they just trained you
for the job
just like that
✨wow✨
an old roommate told me a story about how in the early 90s her mom showed up to this place to interview for a secretary job
guy from an office across the hall pops his head out and asks if she's here for them, a computer position
she says no nope nu uh I know nothing about computers and he goes WE'LL TRAIN YOU PLEASE WE NEED PEOPLE and yanks her off her feet and through the door
today she's a highly sought after computer technician making bank
the point is that once the economy was so amazing that you could get fired from most jobs and have a new one the following week or even the next day
Not to mention now LinkedIn is just full of promoted/advertised jobs that aren’t relevant and a shit ton of literal fake jobs
it's worth it as well to mention that many "open positions" aren't ever going to be filled, that a number of corporations have admitted to listing jobs just to appease overworked staff by telling them they're looking to hire people to help with the workload with no intention of actually hiring anyone
In addition there are people/hiring agencies who have created bots that have them apply for any new job that shows up with whatever criteria they gave the bot to search for. We had a number of completely unqualified applicants apply for a library job we recently had open. This was a higher level position (not entry level) so the education and work experience was needed. Half the applicants didn't have either.
Friends, I am begging you. Do NOT apply through Indeed. At all. Ever. At best you’re lost in a pile of apps that never actually get to a recruiter, at worst 90% of the apps you’re filling out are a scam. Always apply DIRECTLY through the company’s website. You’re 100x more likely to actually get a response. If they don’t have that option, red flag. Move on. Also, look these places up on Glassdoor. Find out if they’re legit and treat their employees halfway decent. If you’re a current student or college graduate, see if your school has a career services team. Utilize that shit. That’s how I was able to get multiple offers and actually choose the better option for myself. Work smarter, not harder. Times are shitty, but you do have a shot if you can cut through the noise.
JUST REVEALED: Don’t go alone. Find your purpose. Dream of something more. Tread lightly. Whatever happens next is up to you.
“Scavengers Reign”, a brand new animated series, will be available to stream on Max on October 19th.

if you learn to love bugs with all your heart the world will feel half as hostile and a thousand times as big
Can confirm.
You know that vast sensation you get when you look up at the stars and go “wow there are whole other worlds out there, massive, mysterious, and unknown.”
I have that same sensation when I crouch down to look at dirt, mud, grass, tree roots, ant hills, rotten logs, leaf litter, roadkill, big dry rocks that I’m not strong enough to turn over… there are whole other worlds down there, mysterious and just known enough for me to feel it when I stare at them.
