I’ve always wanted to try drawing a change of heart Bakura ’ v ’– he can be your angle or yuor devil
Unpopular opinion: I don’t ship Seto Kaiba with anyone.
And I hear you gasping with confusion through the screen! “But PTR, you like stuff that includes shipping Kaiba with someone! Why do you?”
And the answer is simple: Because it’s cute. Or it looks nice. Or I just really really really appreciate the artist/writer and how they give their perspective on Kaiba. And that’s pretty much it.
And that’s not to say ships with him aren’t doable or possible–because they are!! I am all for a Seto that is in a healthy loving relationship with someone!! And when someone does show that well, I do like it!
But that’s about as far as I can actually go. I just don’t see Seto as a romantic person. I see him as the man that is more married to his job and has as much romantic compatibility as a rock.
Which in all honesty, when I watched DSOD for the first time, it really struck a chord with me (in a good way!) when he showed that much emotion for…well, anyone. And not just for the grief for Atem, but he OPENLY showed that shock to Yugi as well. And really…he is a young adult with too much wealth than he knows what to do with and he knows how much power he has and unfortunately that got him and everyone else in that mess. So it was kind of a mixed feeling for me at first, so I had to re-watch it several times to let it sink in.
But to me–I interpreted that as his very first case of feeling any kind of compassion that was outside of Mokuba. The boy has only known family love and it makes logical sense to me that he goes to such lengths to try to comprehend a platonic friendship, or just a really friendly rivalry.
Now I am not saying it can’t be interpreted as romantic either–believe me, I can understand why it can be. When it comes to Seto, there are no bounds or limits for him.
But when I put everything together for his character–I can’t see him WANTING a romantic relationship. Wanting friends? Certainly, but he has so many trust issues and a very twisted view of the world that he would take forever to even ACCEPT that wanting other forms of companionship is an okay feeling to have. And of course coming to terms with his past traumas and all the negativity in his heart is something he probably still goes through (and also props to Atem to making him face that in a more healthy and semi-positive way too, otherwise that would have never happened otherwise).
My main point is–I can see Seto not wanting to be alone, but I don’t think he wants in it a romantic manner. Plus, I think he doesn’t search for it because–again, he has Mokuba. He probably views that’s all he needs in life. His job and his brother. And together they take on their goal of spreading joys for kids.
And then of course a certain Pharaoh that he respected complicates things. Just another day for Seto Kaiba.
SOMEONE SAID IT.
SOMEONE. SAID. IT.
Like… my gosh, YES.
I get why people ship him with characters, and why he’s interpreted as gay, and I have a ship I like here and there with Kaiba (that are mostly all about impressing emotional trust and investment, not romance or attraction) but I LIVE for aro-ace Kaiba (and an aro-ace STILL PASSIONATELY INVESTED IN ANOTHER SOUL because ARO-ACE DOES NOT EQUAL ICE CUBE) and that interpretation matters to me so much more than any ship.
So?
Thank you.
Beautifully said.
ygo au where instead of dueling they actually just beat the shit out of each other
do they still use friendship though

Do you not realize that I have at least 30 chapters to go with Gambling With Destiny?
Do you not realize that after Reconfiguration ends there’s a sequel series immediately after?
Do you not realize that none of this matters and I’ve already come up with some background lore and an explanation for how the ‘twilight realm’ would work and thought about what would set off the plot and how cute Hyrule Town Link!Yuugi would be and creepy Shadow (i.e. Yami) would be and how twili powers would involve turning into FREAKING DRAGONS and had deep considerations on whether Isis or Kisara should be the Zelda, and if Yuugi should turn into a fox or a jackal?

Ancient Egyptians say you only really die if you are forgotten.
It’s amazing, the stories of people we know and their names that have still managed to survive, despite attempts to strike their existence from history…
In YGO’s Ancient Egypt, however, every trace of Pharaoh Atem’s name was stricken from existence – out of love and duty. How hard that must have been for the NEW Pharaoh Seto, who loved and worshipped his cousin, to decree his name be destroyed, for HIM to be destroyed. I wonder if he held the chisel himself. I wonder how hard the last one had to be to bring himself to do. And then maybe that wasn’t even the last one; if another turned up, he must steel his heart to destroy that one as well. Did he hope he missed one? And he did successfully destroy every trace of his name, but he left the tablet of their battle otherwise intact. What other personal treasures did he leave in his tomb? Was it not filled with gold and food and skiffs and statue servants, since he would not need them if he was truly forgotten? His body was still mummified. Was that publicly known, or did he have to carry that out in secret? We do know the obvious ray of hope he left: the promise of a wish for whoever solved the puzzle, and brought him back.
…I think about this a lot, whenever things come up about people trying to eradicate traces of history, especially Pharaohs. I also think about this whenever Kaiba says he will “destroy” Yugi, but then never actually finishes the job…
The Japanese version of DSOD ends with a remix of Priest Seto’s theme from the anime as Seto Kaiba… has spoilers happen, and unlike the high-energy, bold original piece the DSOD version is slow, soft and has this sense of… not closure, exactly, but finality to it.

Do you think…that Yuugi is hard on himself after the events of DSOD? That he wasn’t able to do it by himself? That he needed Atem’s help again?
I mean, obviously he’s gained a lot of self-confidence. But even at the end of the series you could still tell he had some underlying doubt in himself, and even with reassurance, that doesn’t go away that easily. And with what happened, I could easily see that resurfacing those feelings of doubt and “I wasn’t strong enough”. Maybe not all the time, but sometimes, late at night when negative thoughts like to gather…
Eh, I dunno, I like to think that Yugi would realize that it was next to impossible for anyone to be able to remain standing when reality itself was being magically destroyed. He held on for as long as he could and there was really nothing else he could do. He probably would feel bad that Atem’s rest was interrupted, but I don’t think he’d blame himself for that much.
Also, Yugi and Joey jad both been through physically draining Shadow Games before. Joey was in the same situation during the Battle City semifinals as Yugi was in DSOD. Both played a great strategy, but just barely lacked the physical strength to finish his last turn. Joey didn’t mope around about losing, and Yugi shouldn’t either.
Yugi’s desire to be strong on his own without Atem has never been about a physical strength. You don’t need to be physically strong to get by in life, or even play a game of Duel Monsters. Don’t let the anomoly of a Shadow Game let that fade from memory.
Yugi was looking to be emotionally strong. The kid who went througb his childhood with no real friends, who declined playing sports with other kids because he felt like his team was doomed to lose, and spent hours each night alone in his room in the hope that he wouldn’t be so alone anymore. Until the puzzle was solved, Yugi was as alone as a kid could get,
Then, with Atem, he became co-dependent. Only when they were apart in the Memory World did Yugi start to show his infividual strength as he fought Yami Bakura. But, as seen at the end of the Ceremonial Battle, he still had a long way to go.
That’s what DSOD was all about. The contrast between Yugi and Kaiba was the best way to show that Yugi had actually moved on and was still able to maintain his life as it was before Atem’s departure. Even though it was difficult, Yugi was able to accept things for what they were while Kaiba was willing to do anything to get Atem back.
Yugi shouldn’t doubt his strength because he couldn’t finish playing a card game that glorified the apocolypse. He should embrace it because he was able to get by the last two years without falling apart and losing who he truly is on the inside.
I’m so glad that someone could put into words what I felt myself because I’ve felt so alone with not agreeing with OP.
This is the kid who had no friends, no self-esteem to talk about, no belief in himself. The kid who very cautiously suggested games for the school festival with not much hope of people liking the idea.
That same kid could with no problems hold a graduation speech in front of his school mates, with a straight back and a confident smile.
I know it has been said before in a different post, but also remember that Yuugi went through three, THREE, challenging duels before he collapsed. He did everything he could and that was more than anyone else could’ve done.
I won’t say there’s no risk that Yuugi won’t undermine himself after DSOD, but I find it hard to believe when the guy has come so far on his own and will continue to move forward. Even without Atem.
I think something we need to consider is Atem’s timing.
If this were to actually have any effect on Yugi’s confidence, Atem would have had to of shown up way earlier, immediately at the arrival of a threat just like how it used to be. Danger would befall Yugi, his friends, or the world and Atem would step in and take over in the face of evil. In this case however, Atem waited until the very last second, the very last moment when it was absolutely certain that if he didn’t appear, Yugi and everyone else would have died.
This was more about saving the world (and what was precious to Atem) than it was proving that Yugi was strong enough to do this alone. He didn’t need to because he already did that during the Ceremonial Duel.
In truth Yugi’s self confidence wouldn’t be shaken by Atem’s return because at this point Yugi had risen to each and every challenge without a second thought or even a hint of doubt. He was determined and tackled them with an unshakeable confidence we hadn’t really seen before. In the final season we saw the beginnings of it, but Yugi would often question himself and compare himself to Atem, but during DSOD we see Yugi standing proudly on his own.
If Yugi’s confidence was at risk for any reason we would have seen the signs before this final duel even took place. However, all we saw was how much he missed Atem (which is totally natural) rather than him questioning his strength without him. Only then would I see grounds for self-doubt to uproot his growth because then Atem appearing would prove his doubts right when what actually happened was the opposite.
The only doubt I could see in Yugi’s heart at this point was just how much of a connection he had left with Atem. Their separation was so abrupt and knowing that Atem died… I’m sure he wondered just how much of his heart reached Atem after he had passed on. Yugi was convinced that Atem was gone, that he wouldn’t ever see him again. His return had nothing to do with Yugi’s strength and confidence but rather had to do with showing Yugi that he could still hear him. He could still see him. He could still feel him. He still had that unbreakable connection with him. Their bond.
Atem didn’t reverse any of the positive effects of Yugi’s peronsal growth during his absence, instead it gave him that extra little bit of closure that he needed.
I am sorry, but do you mean that Yami Yugi is obsessed with winning?
I assume you’re talking about this post?
Yep. That’s what I mean.
My interpretation is: this is a kid who’s hyper-aware of the responsibilities on his shoulders. He’s been raised from infancy to be the pharaoh, to believe that the survival of a nation hinges on his success or failure, and even after he loses his memories that conditioning sticks with him.
That’s why he’s prepared to push Kaiba off the roof during Duelist Kingdom. That’s why he plays the Seal of Orichalcos. He doesn’t think to look for a solution where no one has to get hurt, it doesn’t even occur to him that the best possible scenario might actually be one where he loses, because in his mind his people (where “his people” can mean anything from “the entire population of Egypt” to “Yugi and his immediate friends and family”) are counting on him, and he can’t afford to lose. Ever.
In his own way, he’s got just as much of a “losing is death” hang-up as Kaiba does. It’s one of the many ways they mirror each other.
I’m colouring old sketches to get rid of my art block
We can’t allow rudeness between the death threats. That would be wrong.
i got the feeling this is one of those things i wont be seeing back again so i’ll just quietly preserve it on my blog
Now that you mentioned it, I’m gonna do the same.
The best pages of the Yugioh manga
Yeah, that’s right, Anzu knocked a B*tch out with a globe. This is why you shouldn’t underestimate the female characters in YuGiOh
Hehe…
There was a panel in the manga during duelist kingdom where Yugi recollects the first time he met Anzu and let her borrow one of her games…that she destroyed because it was too hard to beat ❤️
Don’t ever change, Anzu
There is also the fact that she knocked a pervert out cold who touched her butt while she was working at burger world ❤️
i think the reason mokuba doesn’t duel is because seto knows how dangerous it is. i mean seriously, the magic saw blades, and fire and wasn’t there a lava pit one time? mokuba could seriously get hurt.
so instead, seto has mokuba perfect his deck, and they duel in safe places. mokuba is the only one that can make seto feel pride after losing a duel
Funny enough, I was just about to make a shitpost about what Seto would do if Mokuba became a pro duelist and they eventually end up facing off against one another.
I mean, somebody has to have written that fanfic at some point in the last twenty years, right? 😍
In the manga, when Mokuba challenged Yugi against Kaiba’s orders, Kaiba took that not only as a challenge to his authority, but also as a sign that Mokuba was ready to turn against him. I think Kaiba would be wary of playing against his brother because he would be afraid of seeing his brother as an opponent again. We see an echo of this fear at Duelists Kingdom, when Kaiba gives up the advantage of using his duel disks against Pegasus if it means playing against his brother. And Kaiba struggles throughout the series with the idea that losers deserve to die which would make any game with his brother one with crushing emotional baggage no matter the outcome.
My own headcanon is that, although they never talk about it, Mokuba knows of his brother’s fears and refuses to play duel monsters until his brother is ready to play with him.
I might as well throw in my dumb little headcanon.
I imagine that Seto and Mokuba ceased to play games together because of what games became to Seto. But then I imagine, years down the line after a lot of healing, maybe Mokuba does bring up that he’d like to try playing chess again like in their early childhood and maybe Seto’d be willing to try it. (I can’t decide whether or not chess is permanently tainted for him, but he wouldn’t know either until he tried.)
Critias: “Hey are you winking at me?”
Timaeus: “Watch it or I’ll carve your right eye out”.
