i cannot fucking get over the anarchists thinking nova betrayed them because of adrian and adrian alone. and not even in the nice way of "adrian is kind and charismatic", specifically in the way of "she was stupid enough to let herself be manipulated by a boy. she's a stupid teenager giving up her family for a boy." it's actually insane when you think about it.
it cannot compute in their brains that she turns on them because of her own ideology. why is that? maybe because they don't actually view her as a person with individual thoughts and feelings and instead, like ace, see her as a weapon to be wielded. she belongs to them; she doesn't have the authority to decide her own beliefs.
there's also something to be said about the anarchists considering themselves above others—like i think ace anarchy does at some point refer to another person as "mortal" in a derogatory way, implying he himself is not. so in their minds, nova is giving up "divine purpose" for mortal comforts/desires of the flesh.
i could go on and on about the anarchists' pseudo-religious doctrine and why they have the makings of a cult. even in the first book, where ace himself does not appear until the very end, there's a lot of religious influence on the mindset of his followers. i think I've already talked about how "rapture culture" influences far left spaces with the idea of a single violent revolution that leads to a new, perfect world—this is the crux of nova's motivation to kill captain chromium in the first place(yes her family plays a part but that's not even the main reason she does it). it's callum who first pokes holes in this idea for nova, with his speech about how all the anarchists did was destroy. even though for some reason it's not brought up on page, that speech is clearly a major influence behind nova asking ace and the anarchists to abandon gatlon.
then you get into honey literally kneeling before ace, and how viscerally uncomfortable it makes both nova and the reader. because neither of us are used to it. the anarchists have always held a reverence for him, but before the end of renegades the reader can easily mistake it as martyrdom, the idolization of a friend who died fighting for their cause. the renegades treat the memory of lady indomitable similarly, erecting statues of her and so on. when ace is revealed to be alive, however, it becomes much more unsettling as we see it up close. nova is obviously somewhat used to that kind of behavior, but even she balks at the heights it rises to when ace reclaims the helmet, especially after being so starkly confronted with ace's frailty and mortality while in cragmoor.
on a level, this is what saves her. she struggles to view ace as some christ-like figure because she's seen him at his lowest; despite her having a very limited perspective of him, she knows he is just a man. and ace hates it. even when she doesn't directly disobey him, he can't stand not being treated with that level of worship.
honestly i would've liked to see the anarchists make nova more important to their allies in the cathedral—ace does refer to her as his niece with pride, but he isn't really shown demanding respect for her because of that relation(probably in part because nova questions him in front of all their allies the second they get to the cathedral). i think it would have set in just how much ace views nova as an extension of himself, and on a level, something that belongs to him. i do like the imagery of ace as a divinity and nova as an idolic statue, a vessel people worship him through—that would've been interesting to see.
Nova with a gun
Draw nova with a gun

Shout out to all the books that were labeled YA simply because they were written by women but actually contained dark and complex storylines. Those changed my life fr.
Random angsty thought about Nova
So Nova is half Filipino and half Italian, and I always think about if she ever feels kinda disconnected from a part of herself. As far as we know the Anarchists were super broke, so food was limited and the city is recovering from 20 years of widespread poverty, crime and murder, and at least with my experience as a mixed kid certain ingredients were hard to come by commonly since Galton is in America(???)
She doesn’t seem to interact with anyone but the anarchists before becoming a Renegade, so she basically knows nothing about the culture she’s apart of (things like language, religion/spiritual beliefs if that even exists in the renegades universe, or things like festivals or dances).
Obviously she still has Ace, but he’s basically a walking skeleton he’s not teaching her anything.
With all that in mind, Nova probably had more of an Americanized childhood, aside from whatever memories she has from age 6 and before which probably isn’t a lot. Other than her whole family getting shot in front of her
I only thought about this because of that scene where Nova is at Adrian’s house and she got to talk to someone about her parents even if they were semi responsible for their death but shh
This all just makes me think that Nova just feels like she isn’t who she’s “supposed” to be.
Noreen if only I could adopt you
Someone about to say the dumbest shit you've ever heard in your life:
congratulations your "obviously correct nuclear take" is the cybersecurity equivalent of being a fucking anti-vaxxer
i know it's been said on here and said again but people do so desperately need to genuinely do intentional work to build distress tolerance and start figuring out how to recognize the differences between danger, discomfort, and when a situation that is merely uncomfortable is triggering an emotional flashback in your bodies because it resembles a past situation that actually was dangerous which makes it difficult to realize/believe that this moment is merely uncomfortable.
i spoke to an allistic person who said their autistic classmate had a meltdown in class, during which the autistic classmate collapsed to the floor in the middle of the room, screaming and crying. they said it was "terrifying" and they were arguing for the autistic student to be removed permanently from the program.
when i asked whether their autistic classmate's meltdown was dangerous or merely uncomfortable, they said, "i felt like i was in danger!"
i understand that. but that's not what i asked.
"i shouldn't have to experience that."
yes you should, actually. that's life. upsetting things happen. no one should have to experience any discomfort. but we do. we get stung by bees and sunburns and headaches. we live in bodies in the world.
autistic people are human beings who have the right to exist in society, including during meltdowns. having one class of your entire semester interrupted by a singular meltdown is not anymore of an infringement upon your entitlement to education than having your class interrupted by a fire alarm or cancelled for a snow storm.
one of my peers once experienced a cardiac event 10 minutes into class. it was terrifying. it was desperately upsetting. i was contacted by the school and offered counseling because i happened to be the one who managed the situation until paramedics arrived. everyone was worried about my classmate first and foremost, and then about me. no one blamed anyone, and certainly when my classmate happily recovered and returned to school, no one thought they should be removed from the program.
the difference being that people believe a disabled personal, especially with cognitive disabilities, in crisis are not experiencing something outside of our control, but instead that we are in fact making a choice to make a scene, out of malice.

It doesn't matter how bad the day I'm having is, James Holden is always having a worse one and that's kind of comforting
❤️❤️❤️He's so normal and healthy and regular and I love him
The Expanse has really upped my standards for space battles now.
I adore Star Trek but in pretty much every fight, the bridge crew jiggle about in spinny office chairs with NO SEATBELTS while the stunt guy takes a quick nap on the floor
Meanwhile, the Rocinante crew are strapped in, screaming, injected to the gills with anti brain exploding juice, dodging the block of cheese punching a hole in the reinforced hull at 10000km/h because someone forgot to lock the fridge
everyone (including james holden) is fully aware that james holden failed his way into being the main character of the galaxy.
and absolutely no one (including james holden) is happy about it.
peak james holden moment: when he rolls up on ilus and everyone hates him bc he acts like god’s specialest boy, then literally everyone but him starts going blind and they’re like holy fuck he actually is god’s specialest boy for real
James Holden is so funny.
Every time he goes somewhere and opens his mouth, someone is like, wait, is this going to be another Eros?
And he flashes his big brown eyes in either his most sincere or most serious expression like, it's my number one goal to make sure that doesn't happen.
Except the fact that James Holden is there at all means the situation is already 95% on the way to being another Eros and the only correct reaction to seeing James Holden is to fucking evacuate as fast as you can.
Pathetic Men enjoyers of tumblr you are sleeping on Joe Miller
