ok there’s been enough reblogs from enough people on enough various posts of mine that now i need to stand up for the bitches who don’t fuck of the world. people aren’t writing bad smut because of a lack of having sex. they are writing it because a lot of people have very poor visualization skills and forget halfway through what position characters are supposed to be in, or don’t understand what makes a word a good or bad choice, or can’t create compelling dynamics. i promise that even the sexually inactive, by virtue of also existing within the human form, would know that if you’re behind someone you can’t lick their nipple. and i promise that the frequently sexually active are equally prone to using the word “mewled.” i can pretty much guarantee that having a lot of sex and writing good sex scenes are unrelated. do you think your favorite horror authors are cutting people up in their basements. do you think your favorite food critics are michelin chefs. do you think the people blocking cool combat scenes in movies are routinely getting into cage fights. no they just understand how to utilize tone, pacing, momentum, and the tools of film direction, while keeping action tied to character. like believe it or not this is simply a skill like everything else. idk i always think that that point of view shows a lack of understanding of what makes a sex scene work. it removes the craft of it in a way i find short-sighted. i think people are confused about the reason teenagers are writing bad sex scenes. it’s not because they’re not fucking, it’s because they are young and haven’t had the years to hone their writing craft the way someone older has.
a wise and true post that reminded me of my favorite interview moment of all time
@ralfmaximus Showers that will kill you
Holy shit I thought this was a Sims bit or someone playing with CAD software, but the last few seconds knocked me out
@thebibliosphere I'm pretty sure you are the appropriate recipient for other people's terrifying home renovation choices
thank god vampirism is a flexible metaphor
it’s about being queer it’s about surviving assault it’s about alienation and most of all it’s about how everyone who loved you before might not be able to even look at you now, no matter how many times you try to explain that you didn’t ask to die and you didn’t ask for that death to leave you only half-eaten when it got bored of you.
This is without even mentioning the broader metaphorical implications of disease and contagion; foreign invasion; colonial or imperial violence; interpersonal abuse; generational trauma; religious trauma; violent cultural assimilation; repressed or suppressed desire; the fear of no longer being able to recognise or relate to someone you love; and on and on and on.
Vampirism is a flexible metaphor that reflects the anxieties and desires of its age and its authors, and I love that for it!

A HAMMERHEAD????
I attended a campfire presentation by a park ranger who described Osprey as "both the pickiest and least picky eaters of all time."
They're the pickiest because they only eat things they can catch by plunging into at least six feet of water feet-first and are as close to their maximum carrying capacity as possible, to maximize calories-per-trip.
They're the Least Picky because so long as something fits those parameters, Osprey will go for it.
The ranger then showed us an extensive slide show of the local osprey in flight with their catches, which included: trout, carp, snakes, bass, eels, small sharks, ducks, surprisingly large catfish, a nerf football, muskrats, a summer sausage that fell off a boat, sneakers, a fish previously thought to be extinct in the area, a Barbie Doll, and another osprey.
genuine question i haven’t seen answered before by a transfeminist. how can the law distinguish between a genuine trans woman and a cis man pretending to be a trans woman to get money out of hate speech/harassment in women only spaces law suits. unless thats simply uncommon enough you dont think its a real issue?
This literally never happens and would be actively counter productive if it did (faking being a trans woman would make people less likely to believe you obviously) but if a cis guy is being harrassed I don't really care if he has to identify as a woman in order to get legal support.
Question for anon why don't we see prominent cases of cis men doing it now? Oh wait, they don't, cuz trans women face an increased stigma in the eyes of the law, with laws targetting us and higher incarceration rates due to those laws as well as transmisogyny being built into the systems of power. This question is nakedly trying to erase transmisogynistic power structures. Cis men by and large do not identify as trans women to get out of legal trouble or obtain any kind of standing because being a trans women LOSES us standing. The system is already biased against trans women. If I wanted to gain a leg up in the law or workplace or wherever, I would detransition and pass as a cis man. Dumbshit question.
put succinctly: cis men don't do this because they already have the gender that gives you the greatest advantages in a court of law.
transfeminists aren't spending a lot of time on this question because the answer is obvious if you understand anything about the experience of transfemininity.
managers will be like damn you guys did so much work so fast! your shift doesn't end for another two hours! ...🤔... so if we fire one of you we'll save money on payroll but still get the labor we need...
managers will be like why does nobody try to impress us anymore
capitalists will be like having a profit-based economy creates more jobs and encourages hard work
everybody leaving tags on my letterboxd roundup like "they didn't do the nobody scene??" we're so fucking past that i need you to catch up. i went into the movie knowing they wouldn't do the nobody scene and frankly i had made peace with it like okay if you don't want odysseus calling himself outis because you don't feel like the joke translates well enough WHATEVER you dont need to film every line of the poem. what i was NOT prepared for is that THEY DON'T SPEAK TO POLYPHEMUS AT ALL. they don't steal a giant wheel of cheese, they don't get him drunk, odysseus doesn't taunt him after their escape, AND he doesn't cry out to poseidon or the other cyclopes on the shore. it's "revealed" that he can speak in the cave before their escape as he prays to poseidon. someone asks odysseus "should we try to reason with him?" and ODYSSEUS says "we're past that." resulting in an adaptation where odysseus does not use wit or trickery to escape polyphemus at all-- which is the case with every single obstacle he meets. this guy does not lie and he does not play tricks. his intelligence is restricted to battlefield tactics, the administration and direction of his men as units. You have to poke polyphemus so he opens his eye before you can stab it! I am very smart. the only point at which he could be described as "tricking" polyphemus is when-- because the movie is allergic to making odysseus look stupid or silly in any way-- they tie straw to their backs to be mistaken for sheep instead of riding the undersides of the sheep, and we are presented with an action sequence of trousered and armored soldiers somersaulting and army crawling under polyphemus' gently dangling hand. which i hate because it is a less clever solution that only works if polyphemus is extremely stupid (shepherd who doesn't know how many sheep he has) -- and more importantly because it removes IMO the most emotionally efficient moment in the odyssey, which is polyphemus talking to the one sheep that's walking slow because it has odysseus on its belly like "oh no are you feeling okay today? you're moving so slow, maybe you're upset because i'm in pain? you're the best sheep in the world and i love all of you my sheeps" like that scene is supposed to instantly retroactively humanize polyphemus and make you realize odysseus has been torturing a person with feelings who basically just wants to be left alone with his pet sheep and it's extremely good at that in every translation i've ever read. but not one of odysseus' enemies are allowed an inch of humanity in this entire adaptation which seems to be a veiled metaphor for the vietnam war so what can you expect. and yes because odysseus never does anything wrong or stupid or silly, OF COURSE he would never reveal his name and allow polyphemus to curse him, and his crew only "believes" that he's been cursed by poseidon thereafter, which removes the ENTIRE MAIN ANTAGONIST of the story and changes the central conflict from man vs. god to man vs. ????
What conservatives are DESPERATELY trying to keep from you is that they are too late. You can live a happy, successful life as a trans person now.
I don’t even mean some vague notion of “trans joy” I mean you can make it. You can be a young trans person who grows into a middle aged trans person who gets to be a wrinkly old trans person.
Even if you didn’t get to be a trans kid more and more kids are getting to be trans. They exist right now! They will also grow up to be trans adults and we get to be the ones to show them what that looks like. We get to pave the path that SO many people fought to forage
D&D 5e supposedly has a GM shortage and idk maybe if the player culture of the game didn't treat GMing as a thankless job and the rules of the game as an issue to be fixed by the GM maybe things would be better. Ah well, who knows. Maybe a couple hundred more "we ruined the GM's campaign on purpose" memes will make people enjoy running the game better.
From my Bsky rant earlier, a non-exhaustive list of things I've heard people say a "Good DM" should be able to do:
A Good DM would hold their players' hand through parts of the game they don't understand - without expecting them to read the player handbook.
A Good DM would be able to resolve the completely off-the-wall, mechanically unsupported action the player wants to take in this situation.
A Good DM should be able to meticulously craft a heroic fantasy narrative for their players, and happily throw it all out at a moment's notice.
A Good DM would accommodate their players not wanting to use core gameplay mechanics - like resource management - and then easily be able to resolve all the issues that arise from that - like players being able to easily one-shot bosses - without it interfering with the narrative progression.
A Good DM has time to read your 10-paragraph backstories and incorporate all of that, but also pull just as much character-specific story content out of your 1-word backstories.
A Good DM can play therapist for you as you project your real-world issues onto your character.
A Good DM can act as a referee with perfect conflict resolution skills that satisfy all parties, even when one player's only goal in the conflict is to be an asshole and piss someone off.
A Good DM can respond with grace when a player, or the party as a whole, absolutely refuses to engage with the premise of the story.
A Good DM is happy to keep being DM for the same people forever across multiple games, never getting to be a player again.
Man, some people will really just find a replacement for their parents for ten or more years rather than learn some fucking respect, huh?
If any item on that list is an expectation your players have for you, do everyone a favor and leave to get some milk from the store the next session. Then don't go back. Just ghost, in the only way these players will accept.
The last time I DMed for a group of people, I had just a bit of experience from many years prior, and most of them had no experience at all. But I'd built a whole world and loose story and was excited to share it with people, so I got this group together to give it a shot.
I made the mistake of having them start out as strangers, with a grand plan to bring them together as a group. You see, I was under the misapprehension that, having agreed to play this game, they were interested in the world and story I'd set up, and would therefore take the hooks I laid for them and find reasons to work together. Because I was a fool.
When they made their characters, I asked them to fill in some basic info for me, including someone important from their life (who was still living), their greatest goal in life, and what their character's main motivation would be to go on an adventure.
Half the players tried to treat the game like a single-player sandbox video game and got frustrated and accused me of railroading them when I asked them to please not run alone into the woods in the very first scene when the characters have all just met and been given a reason to work together. At the first sign of any kind of danger, one player would simply say "my character is a coward so he would run away" and refuse to take part in anything.
One player specified in my questionnaire that his character thought himself very wise (a devoutly religious monk, in fact), but was actually very foolish, and was the type to get drawn in by get-rich-quick schemes. So I prepared a hook to draw him into the plot involving an NPC trying to sell him on a get-rich-quick scheme... which he promptly refused to engage with because he'd decided that actually his character was too zen to be tempted with worldly possessions.
When I began to get exasperated, several of the players pointed out that a good DM like Brennan Lee Mulligan never seemed to have any trouble adapting to what players wanted to do. They were unreceptive to my counter points that 1) that is his entire job, which he is paid for, and 2) his players are skilled improvisers and all actively working together to tell the best story possible.
I feel I should note that at this time, all of us in this group were in our 30s. And not, say, 14-year-olds who you might expect this entitled attitude from.
After a few sessions of desperately trying to keep the characters in the game at all without totally railroading them, I asked everyone to please watch a couple specific episodes of Adventuring Academy with Brennan Lee Mulligan which were about how to be a good player so that everyone has the best possible experience. I had already told them that I was spending literally 8 hours per week planning these sessions and trying to find ways to keep things going and keep together a group of people who desperately wanted to be brooding loners, and I promised them bonus XP at the start of the next session if they would just watch one or two of these videos.
At the start of the next session, one player proudly announced that he hadn't watched the videos, and that he wouldn't, no matter how I tried to bribe him, because he didn't think that being a player in a tabletop roleplaying game should come with homework.
When reminded (again) that I was spending 8 fucking hours a week planning these sessions, for which I was not being compensated in any way, and which he was making harder, he shrugged and said that it was my idea to start this campaign, so it was up to me to keep it going, and keep the players interested enough to keep showing up.
I don't DM anymore.
