waaaay back when I was a cashier in retail we would talk about dumb shit while unloading the truck, and we got to the "what would you do in a zombie apocalypse" me and another worker were like yeah we would just die. End it all, we can't fight or run or shit. I refuse to put that much effort into survival.
And my manager was like no!!!! If that happened, I would drive to find you guys in my truck and we could eat stuff from my wife's garden and I would make sure everyone I know survived!! I would carry you all on my shoulders away from the zombies!!
Anyway, random shout out to that guy. You were too kind for retail management, Devin.
Young men today being SHOCKED and APPALLED that the girls they're dating are reading dark romance like the closet in my grandma's spare room wasn't totally chockers with Mills and Boon books when I was a kid. "Our generation is RUINED because the young women are reading NASTY PORN" if you saw the shit 50 year old women were reading in the nineties you'd hurl.
Props to all the people in the notes reminiscing about which specific old woman relative's book collection was their smutty fic awakening
in law school, my mom took me to this stress retreat because my family was vaguely aware i was a suicide risk. and they didnt allow phones, so i brought this huge bag of books. and one of the options for "destressing" was this fake cave grotto thing, where they'd decorated a room to make it look exactly like an underground cave and the air was like -10 degrees, but there was a like 4ft deep pool in the middle that was kept super super hot, so you would just switch between the hot and cold. and they would bring you an endless supply of this weird syrupy drink thing that was like super caffeinated and tasted like sugar and mint. and so i spent multiple days sitting half submerged in this fake grotto drinking mystery liquid and reading. and i have to be honest i really did feel less stressed

How about you mind your own damn business
Me: haha yes i am the chillest person alive
Also Me: *will rehearse before a casual kareoke night*
Me: yes I am so glad I left being stressed behind me
Also me: *won’t enter a restaurant until I’ve looked up the menu and planned my order*
Me: oh I literally do not even care and am so versatile
Also me: *analyzing GPS to ensure my route to the grocery store is as effective as possible*

“Op you are inventing new things nobody has ever done before”
The Archbishop of Canterbury is secretly messaging people on tumblr. Seems totally legit 🤔🤣
This is the funniest scam I’ve ever seen
This what I mean when I say science writing is terrible and you need to actually go back to the academic publications themselves to get what’s going on
I'm not even nearly as anti-LLM as most other leftists but part of approaching new technology is "hey let's think real critically about the application and scope of this so we can use it in ways that are worth it and don't cause mass scale societal damage" but the fact that it's being injected into fucking EVERYTHING makes any stance more cautious than "USE LLMS FOR EVERYTHING NOW AND FOREVER" so much more anti than the status quo that I don't even fucking want to add nuance
Like most of the problems people have with LLMs are the natural conclusion of decades of tech companies gaining monopolies, environmental regulations struggling to keep up with new technologies, and a growing semi-privatized surveillance state, as opposed to issues with LLMs themselves. There's a theoretical reality where LLMs are implemented in useful, responsible, and sustainable ways but that reality is so far removed from our current one that none of those points actually matters
""AI"" is literally just fancy algorithms. Fancy algorithms have a ton of useful applications, like analyzing data for scientists or whatever. Fancy algorithms aren't evil. They can, unfortunately, be used for evil, and that seems to be happening a lot at the moment.
writing tip: put words on page. hope this helps. i will not be taking questions because i have not done this
ITS HOT
Like much of the world, this week we are going to be experiencing an intense heat wave.
If you dont have access to strong enough AC, please find your local cooling centers! Many libraries double as cooling centers, but not all of them.
Here's a WWLP article that lists some cooling centers open during this particular heat wave, and heres 413Cares a website thats been collecting cooling and warming centers for years. Use another resource to make sure those locations are acting as cooling centers for this particular heat wave.
Museums also tend to have very, very good AC to keep their items safe, and all the five colleges' museums are free and open to the public.
Grocery stores are typically kept extra cold to make you hungry so you buy more.
For many of us, the water out of our tap comes out very cold. Hold your wrists veins-side-up under the water for a while to cool down your entire body.
Personal fans, ice water wraps around your neck, and sticking your feet in ice water can go a long way for beating the heat.
Swamp coolers/evaporative coolers work well in lower levels of humidity, but can be dangerous at higher levels of humidity. They raise the humidity in your own space, which makes your sweat significantly less effective. They are easy to DIY with a fan and materials you probably already have. Check your local humidity forecast daily before using them, and just use a fan when its too humid. I wouldnt use a swamp cooler in any of the orange temperatures on this chart, and I'd be really careful about using one in any of the yellow parts of the chart.

You are 60% water and every lake, river, pond, swamp, creek, and ocean you encounter wants to reclaim it desperately. Be careful out there.
Good, I hope it haunts everyone about to enter a body of water so bad that they wear a life jacket. 🙌
Every single person I knew (past tense) who has drowned was "a strong swimmer." Water in the wild does not care how good you are at swimming.
I mean this with all due respect:
You are not going to pass a skillcheck against a rip current once it has you.
Waves will not bow to your physical prowess no matter how impressive.
Shock does not care that you used to be on your school swim team.
If you hit your head, being good at swimming isn't going to turn you face-up while you're unconscious.
You may be unable to return to shore. Rescue may be unable to find you quickly.
I hate how this post reads like you should never swim in natural bodies of water unassisted.
You read all text through your own lens. I have no power that. 🏄
For anyone who isn't taking this seriously, just look at the number of people who've drowned in France during the heatwave
Observed today:
Two little girls playing gently with a daddy long legs.
Girl 1: can it die?
Girl 2, in a calm happy even tone: of course. Like all living things it can and must die.
Really glad predictive text exists. Should i bring my own parking lot

I haven’t pissed people off lately by reminding them that ALL types of physical punishment of kids has been proven beyond ANY reasonable doubt to have only negative long term outcomes.
So let me scream it from the hilltops:
Stop hitting kids. End of sentence.
If you think, “but I was hit and I turned out just fine” let me pre-reply: NO YOU DID NOT. You think hitting a child is ok, how the fuck does that qualify as “fine”?????? From one abuse survivor to another: please start healing yourself.

YOU GOTTA BE FUCKING KIDDING ME TUMBLR
So annoying. So GD annoying.
The World Health Organization report I highly recommend because there are so many conclusions that are shocking and yet completely obvious.
For example, being exposed to corporal punishment as a kid makes it more likely for a person to commit domestic violence against a partner. In places where corporal punishment is normal, people are more likely to think that rape and intimate partner violence are normal. Kids who are spanked are more likely to be violent with and to bully other kids.
Spanking is literally teaching a kid that violence is okay and normal and it affects the whole society.
It also talks about how corporal punishment affects the brain in its development. It changes the structure of the brain and slows the development of mental abilities. Kids who get spanked have much stronger hormonal responses to stress.
I hope you get your favorite food this week and your favorite drink and your favorite 2k dollars
