I just spent a few minutes looking at the maps of where flock cameras are in my area, and when I found a restaurant or store I know with one nearby, I wrote their corporate site to let them know I’d not be going there again until the cameras were gone.

It didn’t take long but it felt like some tiny bit of good to do. Pit the corporations against this shit, they have far more power than I ever will. Just a thing for spare time if you feel the need to DO something but can’t find a way. Worked for me at least.

If you do- Be polite, send nothing that police could call a threat, and maybe remind them that Flock has been caught using these to spy on children and such. Why would anyone take their family to a big corporate owned restaurant when that’s happening? Things like that.

not nearly enough people are fuming about the cass review. do you understand the eventual implications? trans people in the uk will be considered children up until the age of 25, and denied HRT/surgery/even basic measures like legal name change and social transition. all owing to a biased and largely unscientific study. you know what “treatment” for gender dysphoria is recommended by the review instead? conversion therapy.

this will kill people and they know it, because they prefer us dead and out of sight. the government, the NHS and even the opposition have made this clear again and again. a twenty-five year old can have sex, get married have children, join the military, earn a living, be halfway up the corporate ladder or highly successful in their chosen career field by that age, but they can’t transition under NHS rules. this is a death sentence for trans teenagers and they are going ahead with it. it’s trans genocide, same as across the pond.

Genuine question. Why should someone who is freelance, self employed or unemployed join the IWW as the ad suggests? Wouldn’t a collective benefit or pension plan suite them better?

There are a lot of reasons someone might join the IWW despite not having typical employment. For one, the only way the working class can enact change is to work together against the capitalist system. Whether you have regular employment or you're totally unemployed, you're still working class if you don't own capital, and your class interests align with those of employed workers in your community. It benefits the entire community when wages are high, worker safety is enforced, and bosses are kept in line.

Joining, paying dues to, and attending meetings with your local branch gives that branch more worker power and more funding. Having more worker power and more funding helps the union fight for bigger and better changes and reach more workers.

For freelancers, joining the IWW can give you a community where you can get advice, compare rates to make sure you're getting a fair deal, recommend gigs or publications to each other, warn each other about predatory ones, and otherwise build solidarity. As an example, I (the social media volunteer typing this) have personally used IWW freelancer connections to help figure out what rates I should charge for commissions.

On a practical, day-to-day level, the union also always needs volunteers to do things like manage social media, maintain websites, facilitate meetings, organize events, keep track of bank accounts, and any number of other logistical and clerical tasks. If you want to help support unionized workers and workers trying to unionize, joining the IWW and helping with those tasks can be an incredible way to build community, organize workplaces, and support actions like strikes.

Hi, I'm an under/unemployed/freelance person in the IWW! I attend meetings, vote, pay dues, etc. I wanted to share one of the things I got out of my union this year!

I recently attended what's called an External Organizer Training, which teaches people how to be the point of contact with an actively organizing workplace, something you may see referred to as a "hot shop", and provide them with the steps and support needed to unionize. It was incredibly fulfilling to be able to offer up my own work history experiences in the scenarios we were assigned. We were paired up in groups, and discussed how we might address things like how to make connections between people doing delivery apps in the same area, how to make connections with language barriers, how to prioritizing worker needs/demands, when to escalate action, and the like.

So not only was I able to share my own knowledge, but I very much learned a lot about the process of organizing. And it was also a lot easier to absorb than I expected. But this means that, in the future, if I need to, I have the knowledge of how to help someone take the steps to organize, and that makes life a little bit better for everyone. It gives me a sense of purpose, and well-being, to help my community, even if all I can do right now is attend meetings and talk about it on the internet.

In regular meetings, when I feel up to it, I've volunteered to facilitate my branch meetings -- meaning, you keep everyone on track, alongside the time-keeper. Some branches have their secretary do it, some choose at the end of the previous meeting, but we're a pretty small branch and work on a volunteer system these days. As they said, we need people to do things like track paperwork and open emails. Ideally, you're not doing these things alone, and that's, really, the whole point.

When the working class support each other, we all benefit.

We have multiple members in our branch who are disabled and unemployed! I (the social media volunteer typing this) am myself disabled, and I can't hold a "typical" job. The last time I tried, it put a ton of horrible stress on my body and I just couldn't maintain it. It sucked.

My participation in our branch is largely helping with social media. I don't attend most of our branch's tabling events, like Pride, because it's too much for me to be out in the heat, on my feet, and risking covid exposure. Instead, I help make graphics, describe images, post event information, and respond to messages. It's something I can do from my home, and it's something I'm able to vary my level of commitment to as my spoons fluctuate.

It can definitely still eat a lot of time and energy, so I'd say it really depends on what your personal abilities and interests are. I know what sort of things my disabilities do and don't allow, but every disabled person is different. You might be able to do things I can't, and I might be able to do things you can't. I don't want to make assumptions.

Definitely reach out to your local branch (there's a directory at this link). Talk to them about what kind of things they're focused on locally and what their current volunteer needs are. Even if you decide you're unable to participate as an active member, your local branch may have a social media presence you can signal boost and share with your community.
