not traumadumping, just blogging during a tough time. <3 i'm sorry times are so unprecedented rn, i hope things improve both in the macro and the micro. <333
<33333 I didnât see this last night but I do feel a lot better today and yeah youâre right 𫶠and tbh ultimately I am very privileged in many ways and I donât want to act like Iâm in any way one of the primary victims of climate change rn when there are so many people experiencing the effects far worse than I am both globally and in my own province, but it does get overwhelming sometimes to feel so powerless watching all of this happen. but the kind of climate doomscrolling that Iâve been doing recently is not productive and really doesnât help myself or anyone else
i had a very very long climate grief crashout in 2020 due to natural disasters happening in my area and what got me out of it was time, carefully learning more about the failures and the successes in small doses and trying to pay equal attention to both, disaster preparedness research, and honestly assessing what i personally can do in my day to day to make a difference without driving myself insane and with the complete understanding that it's not about the individual action but it might make me feel better all the same. now when i think about it it doesn't seem so all-consuming and it's easier to hear a headline and not immediately jump to thoughts of apocalypse. we are living in terrifying times but it doesn't help to let it consume you. i hope it gets more manageable for you soon!
this is very kind of you <3 Iâm usually pretty good at managing my climate anxiety for the most part but in the last two weeks weâve had the heatwave and then my city was hit by a generational storm on july 1st (thankfully no fatalities but it caused a ton of property damage and it apparently was the worst storm weâve had in 200 years or something) and now the wildfire smoke. and the last few days have genuinely looked apocalyptic outside like thereâs an orange haze over everything it really does look like disaster movie. and I went for a run earlier bc the air quality warnings were clear but I was just choking on smoke and when I got back I just felt so bleak and hopeless about everything. and I donât remember ever having summers like before like 5 years ago? and now itâs like every summer is just unbearable to even be outside for a lot of it because of either heat or wildfires or random extreme weather events. also I ended up in the ER last year with heatstroke which was partially my fault bc I take medication that makes me more prone to heat and I wasnât drinking enough water that day but I think that really freaked me out and now Iâm terrified of extreme heat lol. and then also Iâve been stressed out for unrelated reasons so this hasnât been helping. but anyway youâre right I do need to pay less attention to online doomerism and more attention to work that is actually being done to reduce the impacts of climate change and also focus on what I can control. I also might take another social media break or just reduce my screen time until the end of the summer. anyway sorry for traumadumping i appreciate you sending this đ«¶đ«¶đ«¶đ«¶đ«¶

Now that everyone is discussing Nolan's Odyssey movie, I feel like it's a good time to let non-Italians know that the production dumped plastic props into the Italian sea. Weirdly enough I could not find any article in English about it but it's a fucking problem nonetheless.
I might translate this article later today. This one was the most complete one, even in Italian news it's not talked about that much.
Non Ăš la prima volta che la produzione solleva un vespaio in Sicilia. A Lipari una squadra di sub sarebbe perĂČ giĂ impegnata a bonificare i
They dumped plastic skeletons in environmentally protected areas, against the literal contracts they had to sign to get the permits to film in environmentally protected areas. Like they not only did a bad ecological thing that freaked out some divers, they literally broke environmental protection laws and their contract with the Italian government
everything is okay

oh yeah I watched the odyssey yesterday
let me start with what I liked:
- visually itâs nice to look at
- anne hathaway is easily the acting mvp of the movie
- robert pattinson overacts in this but in a really funny way
- despite all the racists whining about her casting, lupita nyongâo is perfect as helen of troy and is one of the only people in the movie who actually looks and is styled like she belongs in the time period. I actually gasped when she appeared onscreen for the first time
- the cyclops kinda looked like saturn devouring his son which I thought was cool
- the movie is three hours long but it never feels like the runtime is padded and I genuinely never felt bored at any point
- the travis scott end credits needledrop
now onto my complaints:
- okay so admittedly I have not read the odyssey in its entirety but my sister, who I saw it with, has (she actually brought her copy to the theatre) and she was super excited to see it. I had a general idea of the story overview and main plot points but not the details. but I noticed that a lot of major scenes werenât included in the movie (the nobody scene ??) and my sister told me after that even more was cut than I realized and that the movie adds in character motivations that donât exist in the book
- and even weirder than that, Nolan seems completely uninterested in greek mythology? like to the point that most of the references to the gods in the text are cut from the movie entirely. athena is barely in it and has like maybe 4 lines in the whole movie (and thereâs a scene that implies that her appearances might just be a manifestation of odysseusâs trauma rather than an actual goddess ?? which is like. okay a24 lmao). the way the characters interact with the world is very grounded in modern day reality if that makes sense. I saw a review that said that odysseus reacts to all the monsters or mythological creatures they encounter like theyâre everyday OSHA hazards which weirdly sums up the approach to everything in this movie - itâs like itâs scared to imply that there could be anything fantastical or mythological about whatâs happening. it feels like the movie wants to feel like a historical epic without presenting anything that would seem unfamiliar to modern day western audiences. which just ends up making it feel empty. and it takes a very western-centric approach to telling the story and universalizes it instead of situating it in the culture that created it
- nolan also seems more interested in this story as a continuation of the themes of oppenheimer (the horrors of war, the consequences of your actions, etc), which is fine and obviously every adaptation will focus on the themes a specific director wants to emphasize, but also like. nobody forced you to adapt the odyssey to explore these themes. why choose to adapt THIS text if youâre clearly this uninterested in the mythology of the time period and the ways that what people believed shaped the stories they told
- Iâm also not a historical fashion girlie whatsoever but the way the characters are dressed also feels very modern. again I donât need 100% historical accuracy here (I unironically watch bridgerton okay) but a lot of the way they were dressed felt like they were trying to look as close to 21st century fashion as possible in order to not present anything that might look weird to modern audiences
- and Iâm not against anachronistic adaptions. I love baz luhrmanâs romeo + juliet okay. I also donât think itâs possible to make a truly faithful adaptation of anything because the medium and time period that the story itâs written is is part of the original story, so my concern in adaptations is how faithful they are to the heart of the story. and I just think that you cannot divorce a story like this from the belief systems that existed at the time because those shaped the way people understood the world around them !!
- anyway because of all this it just ends up feeling like spectacle with no heart behind it. itâs entertaining to watch but thereâs nothing beneath the surface.
- the modern day american accents and slang (âmomâ âdadâ etc) are jarring at first although I got used to it eventually
- tom holland is so miscast in this and a lot of his line deliveries are just straight up bad. matt damon is also unconvincing because he looks like his name is matt
- it was honestly very forgettable? like even 24 hours later the movie has had basically no lasting impact on me

Several wildfires are forcing members of a number of First Nations to flee their homes in northern Ontario.
âI had time to run home and pack a bag and get to the beach where the boats were waiting,â said a member of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation (Collins). âWe literally had minutes to get on the boats and flee before it took our town. âOnce we left my house finally after packing what I could in a pack sack, the fire was right behind our place. We had to run to the beach and once we got there, it was only moments before the fire had jumped over the (train) track and was coming for us.â
it has since been confirmed that namaygoosisagagun first nation has completely burnt to the ground. if you would like to help the community navigate an ongoing crisis, i urge you to donate to the anishinabek nation 7th generation, a registered charity seeking to improve the lives of first nations people. donations are going directly to members of namaygoosisagagun first nation.
