To the people commenting about the commute time still being too long, thank you for making me deconstruct how far the average commute should actually be. At first I scoffed and was like "15 min commute is the biggest pie in the sky" and then I remembered that in many places in the world they actually have mixed use neighborhoods where there's essentially businesses and houses sometimes even side by side but certainly in closer proximity than what we have here so commutes are actually short things you can either walk and transit to or bike where there's infrastructure. Gave me an extra kick of righteous fury.

I HIGHLY recommend giving compliments to random strangers.

Not, like, fake compliments or randomly giving a scrounged up compliments to everyone you pass in the street, but -- say you see someone with an article of clothing you really really like. Cool accessories or a freat haircut or something. Tell them.

I told an old woman yesterday that I liked her blouse. It was this super pretty white-at-the-top-floral-at-the-bottom shirt which was really lovely. So i backtracked where I'd walked past her and I said "excuse me - i love your shirt." And this harried, stressed-looking 80-something year old brightened up immediately, and beamed, and then when she and I headed off in separate directions, she had a pep in her step.

This other time I told a woman that I liked her boots. She gave me a company name thats since become my favourite brand of shoes. I told someone else that her scarf was cute and she was like "do you like it? Here, you can have it," and she dropped her scarf in my hands and then got on her train and left. I once saw a woman who had clearly put effort into her outfit that day but was now looking harried and frazzled as she wrangled four children across the road, and I told her that her outfit was gorgeous and she lit up like a christmas tree. I told a gay man that I loved his whole look once and he turned into a smiling, blushing mess as his super delighted and proud boyfriend was like "yea, he DOES look gorgeous doesnt he?"

If you see someone with something compliment-worthy going on, don't hold back. What's the point? Ive never once had a bad response to giving a compliment to a stranger. Everyone to a tee has been absolutely thrilled to receive a surprise compliment about their outfit or their make up or their shoes or their vibe or etc. Give out compliments to random strangers. Its free, and it'll make their whole day.

I do this all the time -- compliment strangers on something they chose about themselves. So not "your eyes are so pretty" but "wow, that eyeshadow is incredible on you". Shoes, purses and clothes are super easy to compliment too.

One time I was out with my sister and my niblings, and one of the kids asked me, "Aunt ____, why do you tell people you don't know you like their clothes?" And I said, "Doesn't it brighten your day when someone compliments something you chose to put on?" The kiddoes immediately got it, because they love it too! It's universal, in my opinion. We all like it!

I've talked about my fruit box on several occasions. How since I told my mom that I just don't eat fruit because the task of buying, keeping track of and preparing it is too demanding, she has been cutting up fresh fruit for me and putting it in an easily accessible box at least once, sometimes twice a week. This week, as she was cutting away, I asked her about it. "How are you still doing this every week? It's been years. It's very nice of you, but why do you bother?" Her answer surprised me.

"You know how schizophrenics have a much lower life expectancy than the general population?" she said. We do. For a combination of various reasons that I won't get into here - that's not what this post is about - people diagnosed with schizophrenia die earlier than people without schizophrenia, statistically speaking. Apparently my mom knows this too. And she has read up on it. Why do we die. What can be done.

Most of the contributing factors are not something my mom has any shot at affecting or controlling. But one of them stood out to her. Not a major one admittedly, but still it was mentioned. A lot of us don't eat enough or don't eat varied enough. We generally don't get enough fruits and vegetables, because when you're severely mentally ill and also likely to be poor, that's just not a realistic priority for a lot of people.

My mom has felt very powerless in the face of my illness. She loves me a lot, but it hasn't solved most of the things I've been struggling with, most of the detours my mental health has taken, most of the crises I've survived. And there's a lot she can't do, while also working a full-time job, and being there for the other people in her life. A lot of it is very much out of her control. But she can cut up fresh fruit. And so she does. Every week.

It's October 1st and you know what that means

Time to start taking vitamin d and using my light therapy lamp every morning for the next six months so I don't completely lose it before spring rolls around 🙃

If you too live a stone's throw from the Arctic circle this is your cordial reminder to start taking your vitamin d and dust off your light therapy lamp before the SAD sets in! Vitamin d and light therapy lamps are most effective when you start using them beginning early in the fall, before your SAD gets too bad. Don't let the SAD set in and get too bad, start now!

Well this little post I made over my morning coffee is gaining quite a bit more traction than I expected (which I'm happy for, remember to take your vitamin d!)

Here's a few more reminders for the upcoming winter darkness:

- Vitamin d is fat soluble, meaning you need to consume it with fat for your body to absorb it properly. This is why a lot of vitamin d capsules contain Omega-3 and/or other oils. If you aren't eating or drinking something rich in fat when you take your vitamin d, take it with a spoonful of something like Omega-3 oil. In the Nordics it's popular to have a spoonful of fish oil in the mornings because fish oil is rich in Omega-3, which helps with SAD especially when taken alongside vitamin d.

- Check with a doctor or local healthcare provider what they think is an appropriate amount of vitamin d to take at your latitude. I just found out from my doctor last winter that I wasn't taking nearly enough vitamin d for how far north I am, and she told me to actually quadruple my dose. It sure made a difference and last winter was noticeably less miserable for me.

- When using a light therapy lamp, it's best to try to position it as close to eye level as possible, and ideally around 60cm / 2 feet away from your face.

- Try your best to still go out and be physically active, I promise it really does help with SAD! I know, trust me I know how much harder it is to make yourself go out and still be active when it's so dark and cold and miserable out. But if you make an effort to still go out and meet your friends at a cafe you will feel better. If you still make an effort to move your body you will feel better. Last winter I actually bought a DDR gamepad and got back into DDR so I could still move and get some exercise over the winter. It really does help, I promise!

This doesn't just apply to people near the Arctic Circle, but places where the number of sunny days drops significantly during the winter months due to Winter = All The Rain. I'm looking at you Oregon, Washington, & SW British Columbia. A doctor told me once that she'd never seen an Oregonian who *wasn't* vitamin D deficient.

A Lot Of Germans are vitamin D deficient, too. Guys, we are not nearly as far South as we tend to think. The Gulf Stream is tricking you.

Generally speaking, this country is actually on the same latitude as (southern) Canada, not the US. And at least in North Germany, the sky also has the unfortunate tendency to turn into one greyish-white mass with no chance of sun.
