It started by seeing other people’s fanart…it started by reading other people’s fanfics…

Of course, the more I watch the sacrifice scene, the angrier I get because even the way Jake spoke to Spider and led him off into the forest was like a dog owner gently coaxing his old, troubled pet off into the trees to be put down. That's how little Spider meant to him. By the end of the day, Spider was just a troublesome pet Jake tried and failed to abandon on the side of the road, and when that didn't work, he resorted to putting him down because he was just becoming too troublesome to take care of.

You know how Spider haters would make these things where Spider was Sully family dog? I never really paid attention to it until this scene. Because this is where it really seemed like he was never a person to Jake (Neytiri obviously too but she wasn't hiding it - he was always just an alien to her). Jake just takes Spider to that forest like he was a dog that was too hard to take care any more and you don't want to spend money on his treatment. It easier to just get rid of him and tell the kids he went to live in a farm upstate.

I know the film expects us to believe Jake loves Spider so much he rather endangers the world than harm him but that's not what it establishes. It never shows us Jake actually caring outside general taking care of a kid when it's not to inconvenient to his family. It never shows there is any parental care on Jake's side. And then it just but actually Jake loves him like a son.

No, he doesn't. He would never leave his kids behind like he did Spider. he would never take them to the woulds. He doesn't love Spider like that. At most this is the kind of love that gets you on the news about the father that shot his kids because life is too hard and he didn't want his wife to get custody. Jake would so lose at that King Solomon court to Quaritch.

It feels like being gaslit when Jake talks about love because we see at the same time Quaritch who, for all his other faults, actually loves Spider no matter his mission, his beliefs or even Spider's rejection. The kid tries to kill him and he still jumps after him. Spider isn't even allowed to be angry at Jake and Neytiri after murder attempt. The contrast makes that scene feel even more fake and creepy on rewatch.

And then there is the fact that Spider is just accepting that this is love. That he is grateful. That he has no complains. It makes it feel culty. Like he has been so convinced his whole life that he deserves all the shitty treatment for these adults because he has to atone for the original sin of being Quaritch's son that nothing they do is something he would fault them for. Fighting only gets you rejection and being send away but if you take it long enough they will let you sleep inside the house. Really, like an abused dog that keep trying to please for the scraps of attention.

It’s genuinely hard to believe any adult cares about him tbh…even Quatritch when that’s supposed to be his whole thing

They all failed him one way or another.

To a point where spider in the next addition of the series is gonna be an adult.

There’s no more room to fix this. He quite seriously aged out of a fucked foster system.

You know what? I would have taken the Sacrifice scene so much more seriously if Spider hadn't forgiven them and begun to distrust them. Years of turning the other cheek and being the bigger person despite his VERY young age, almost getting murdered by his childhood hero, should have been the straw that broke the camel's back for Spider; it should have broken his mind and turned him into a paranoid cynic.

It would have been the perfect example of how some things just cannot be rebuilt from the ashes. What's broken is broken and can never be fixed. Unfortunately, we'll never get any scenes of Spider being legitimately angry because the moment he expresses any negative emotions, he'll automatically be labeled as a possible traitor or an evil gremlin determined to ruin everything.

@brownstudys I didn't mean to imply Quaritch is a good father to Spider. He isn't. But I wouldn't say he doesn't care. He just doesn't understand him. At all.

He is a mirror to Jake and he has exactly the same problem with Spider and Jake has with Lo'ak. Both of the fathers think they know best. They are doing what they must to keep the kids safe. Jake does it so hard Lo'ak almost kills himself. Quaritch gets Spider through torture and trauma. All for their own good. Bu in both cases this is a physical safety and it just ends up trying to keep kids in a cage while destroying what they care for.

Jake tries to squish Lo'ak's sense of right and wrong and get him away from "the bad crowd" to stop him from doing stuff Jake finds reckless because of unintended consequences of those actions. All the while unintended consequences of Jake's own actions are just as bad. But Jake meant well when he made his choices. Lo'ak just doesn't think so someone who knows better has to make hard decisions for him. He projects his own failures on Lo'ak. He only understands what Lo'ak was doing and that it was right that at the very end. This is when Jake learns his lesson and recognizes Lo'ak was right. At least Lo'ak got this kind of an apology.

Quaritch has lost his advantage and forfeited his mission for Spider repeatedly. None of the But he's a minor. He doesn't know what's the best. If keeping Spider safely in Bridgehead, away from war and other danger means it'll have to hurt a little then it'll have to hurt a little. Spider is going to save humanity and earn his place in the world RDA is building and that's a win-win scenario. Kid doesn't want that but he just doesn't know what's best for him.

None of the things that happen to Spider when he gets kidnapped the second time are danger to his life. All the procedures he goes through are safe. The fact that this is all against Spider's will and that makes it abuse doesn't even register. What's a little pain to get what you need? Quaritch would get over it himself like he did with Varang. Spider will get over it too. Quaritch, as always, is unstable to look at things from another perspective.

All his conversations with Jake are about refusing to see. It's true for the Pandora in general but most of all he doesn't see Spider. He loves him. But he doesn't see him.

@holyraconteur This bothers me so much. People shit on Jack's acting in that scene but he has no problem to act with Land or weaver in the emotional scenes they are in. However, here Spider has to act in such a abnormal way - what normal person would react like this to almost being murdered by their most trusted adult - that it all falls apart.

That whole scene is for Jake. It's Jake trying to save his feelings by being shitty to Spider. It's Jake fighting with his conscience. It's Jake deciding he cannot do it. Of course, Sam's acting in it is what carries it.

Spider and his emotions are not even a factor. He could've been a prop here. There is no response to what Spider is feeling in this situation. Jake just basically has this struggle with his thoughts, morals and faith and comes in the other end realizing this is wrong. Not thought spared to how he just traumatized a kid for it.

So Spider cannot be traumatized by it. He cannot be angry. That would mean we had to let Spider's feeling about any of this matter and it was about Jake finding his way to be the man the people need. The kid is grateful to be alive and that's enough, right?

And I really hate when people justify this by saying Spider is so Na'vi that he forgives it all. That's not how Na'vi work. we see them hold grudges (Varang made this her whole personality) and hate those who wrong them (Neytiri did that to him even when he wasn't one at fault). But Spider is never allowed to be angry at the good guys. He has to understand their trauma. They never need to consider his.

The film tries to make a point that Spider shouldn't be judged for his origin but at the same time shows us that he passed a test of being a "good" human. He forgave all the shitty treatment so now hazing is done and he earned his place. Now we will care about him and let's forget how we got here. It's all bygones, right?

I do wonder where future films will take Spider’s character growth. While he physically went through an evolution in AFAA and we got to see more of his goofy personality he likely always had, there wasn’t enough time in the film to see the repercussions of the adults’ actions impacting the kid. As soon as Jake decided to find “another way”, it was back into battle.

There were plenty of scenes from the final battle that could have been trimmed or straight up removed to give us an extra scene of Spider coming to terms with the situation. The good and the bad terms. He could have broken down to Kiri without straight up saying “your dad tried to kill me” and we would’ve gotten a far more normal response (or at least a taste…) to the betrayal Spider felt.

The only blowback we see to Spider being upset with Jake is when he storms out of the marui after being told he was going back to High Camp. Jake even tries to get Spider on his side in the decision but, for once, he disagrees and shows ot. But all the kids got upset…so it wasn’t just Spider having his own reaction to the situation. He wasn’t even the first to storm out even though the decision was literally about just him…

I don’t see Spider being as much of a “prop” going forward, so I’m very curious what his role will be aside from Kiri’s arm candy…unless that’s his new role… 😑

Did Ka’sem really raise Kalintu…?

No…not really. It was more of a warden situation. Varang felt Ka’sems years of dedicated service and stern demeanor would help keep the little prophet in line…perhaps even influence Kalintu’s erratic behavior.

And yet, Kalintu defied Wukula’s orders and did not use his ability to see beyond to locate the Dog Tag Warrior.

Now, it is Ka’sem’s time to see if he can convince the psychic to open his eyes…

Here is Part 1 of Kalintu’s little saga on the hunt for So’lek. How long will he be able to hold out…?

Also, I will be revisiting the first drawing with Wukula as I realized I missed some key details (scarification! 🫠) and I’ve learned some new techniques! I may also write little chapters to go with each illustration in the future.

The AFAA art book showed that colonel Quaritch actually has his own personal quarters at Bridgehead — a modular unit that was shipped to Pandora together with his body years ago. It has a work-desk, a shower, a vanity table, some top shelves and two beds.

Headcannons:

When the squad made their periodic returns to Bridgehead for resupplying and reports, Spider crashed at Q’s place. Quaritch justified it with being the prisoner’s ward and having a better eye on him that way.

Spider definitely snooped all over the place and opened every drawer, closet and compartment he could find, but discovered nothing interesting. Colonel’s apartment is sickeningly sterile at first.

Spider takes the top bunk, naturally, and Quaritch often wakes to him hanging half-way off the edge, his painted hand dangling just above his chest. He tried more than once to hold it without making the boy bolt awake (forest survival instincts)

Spider loosing his mind from boredom and turning the flat into a hurricane site as Quaritch is trying to get some work done on the computer (he does that on purpose).

Giving him a tablet usually helps though.

Coming back from the failed mission, the room became a cold reminder of the person now missing from his life.

Quaritch spent hours lying awake, looking at the top bunk, trying to process the fact that he’ll never see an unruly teenager hanging half-way over the edge again. A loss he himself caused.

The devil is in the details!

Because I love Spider and his feistiness, I noticed while looking at screen caps of AFAA that the Mangkwan took some extra precautions with our favorite Monkey Boy. 🕷️

Obviously, we know Jake and Quaritch are hogtied because they’re stronger and more physically dangerous. The Sully kids have their hands tied behind their backs. And yes, while Spider does have his hands tied behind his back too, you can see in several caps that the knot is also secured by a rope around his stomach.

Guess they didn’t trust this feral, little air breather… 😆🕷️😈

More scenes of Spider’s captivity in ATWOW and how the recoms adapted to the feral teen. That had to be a hell of an adjustment for everyone. 😆

I always liked the Avatar movies from day one, but I didn’t become obsessed until ATWOW. 💙

This is tough…and while I do think there are many characters written well, I’m actually going to say I was most surprised by how much I loved Payakan’s character in ATWOW. His story was very well fleshed out and his impact on major plot points in ATWOW are undeniable. 🐋 #payakanistherealhero

7) Any hot takes to share with us ;)

Not sure if this is a hot take, but I think AFAA would’ve done better with fans if it wasn’t advertised as “Lo’ak’s movie”. Interviews made it seem like this was Lo’ak’s coming of age moment but, while he was still important at times, AFAA was not about him. If anything, ATWOW was Lo’ak’s movie…AFAA was more about the relationships between Jake and Quaritch, Spider and Kiri, and a touch of Spider and Quaritch (but anything more from the minimal interactions we saw in ATWOW is awesome.) ❤️‍🔥

8) Which tribe/clan would you like to be a part of?

I heard (and still do) that Spider will eventually betray the Na’vi and become a villain…I really just don’t see it happening… 🫣

Quaritch continues to be obsessed with getting his son back. 🦅 I know it’s not what Spider wants but it was fun to see the colonel thrown off so much by a teenager…

Chapter 34: Let The Rain Fall

“Green wire, dumbass!” Zdinarsk snapped when she got a decent jolt from the generator she was trying to get started. Squeezed underneath the platform of an abandoned field outpost in muddy undergrowth she had to burrow through, the last thing she needed was an electric shock after everything the recoms had just pulled.

“I’m still fucking colorblind!” Lopez hissed back from the electrical panel on the other side of the open research area. How Lopez still carried this genetic trait from his human self? Not important at the moment...

While getting power to the whole outpost would be great, the first goal was to kickstart the air filtration system for the shack. When Zdinarsk and Lopez scouted it during the time Quaritch made his way to Devin, they only scoped it from the outside. The sealed part of the outpost had the living quarter basics, or so it looked through the mossy windows. Cramped sleeping quarters and minimal kitchen necessities, but it had solid, uncracked windows and a working filtration system for its previous human inhabitants. When it had power, of course.

Wainfleet watched Zdinarsk’s and Lopez’s banter while Ja was causing a ruckus clearing space inside the open lab. He pressed thumb and forefinger to his throat comm, “No dying, brothers.”

A crackle of static then silence as he pulled the earpiece out and turned off the communication device completely.

Radio silence. The recoms had no choice. They’d done more than deserted their point; they’d commited downright treason.

And yet...

Here they were. The 1st Recom Unit had seen Earth and the RDA as unworthy of their service.

All because of one human kid with a heart of gold tarnished by human cruelty.

If there was anything the recoms found worth protecting in their second life, it was sitting barely alive in a rusted outpost left abandoned by other humans who recognized what was and was not worth protecting long ago...

“You’re ok...nice and easy...real slow...” Ja repeated softly as he moved Spider’s arm like it was made of glass. He used medical sheers to cut off the sleeve of the once white lab coat Devin had offered the kid in the last bit of kindness he’d experienced before the daring rescue attempt. He repeated himself but it was more like he was talking to himself the way the teenage boy didn’t respond.

No words. No winces. No reactions whatsoever.

The doc could slit his throat slow and methodically with a scalpel, and Spider wouldn’t budge.

It had started raining hard by the time the recoms reached the abandoned field lab. It was crazy how many of these little metal structures, most taken over by nature from years of abandonment, the recoms had found in their missions. Quaritch thought it was a waste of resources back then, but now? A lifeline for his boy. Breadcrumbs for them to follow to get further and further away from Bridgehead and the RDA...

He’d scooped Spider up in both arms as soon as Cupcake landed and sprinted into the open-air research space, vaulting up all the metal grate steps at once.

“I got you, tiger, papa’s got you.” Quaritch said as he held him close for a few seconds before hearing more footsteps behind him. He cleared his throat and immediately followed Ja’s lead as he dropped a large medical bag on a dusty workbench. The medic swiped his arm across to clear off old tools and dirt for the Colonel to place his son down.

Quaritch didn’t want to at first...but knew he had to let go for Spider’s injuries to be assessed and treated.

He would let go...for now.

“Sir, I’m going to need you to sit down before you fall down.” Ja said firmly as he didn’t stop tending to Spider.

Adrenaline and pure stubbornness gave Quaritch the willpower to put any weight on his right leg. He would’ve congratulated whoever the marksman was that turned his kneecap into a jigsaw puzzle if they weren’t aiming at him. And if they’d survived the completely reckless and barely planned coordinated attack with the Mangkwan.

‘Barely and ‘coordinated’ were an exaggeration; ‘planned’ was an outright lie.

Quaritch knew very little about the Na’vi clans beyond the fertile Pandoran forests. When he was human and in charge, he didn’t care able the barren lands and what crawled out of it. ‘Mangkwan’ was just another clan to them that they would shoot on sight.

It wasn’t until his second life, listening to the ramblings of his son and his life among the Na’vi, that he learned how truly different the clans of Pandora were. Without even realizing it, Spider had planted a seed in Quaritch’s mind to learn more about his enemy. Not just how to kill them...

Ja’s sighed when he heard the shuffling of Wainfleet scrambling up the metal grate steps to catch Quaritch when he did finally fall. As much as he did want to tend to his superior, the good doctor had to prioritize one patient at a time and the screeching reprimand he would get from the colonel wasn’t worth it. Besides, he could only see the surface damage of the teen. And it was bad...

There was so little natural-colored flesh on Spider’s body that Ja was stunned the boy was able to disassociate enough to be touched. Dark bruising, almost black in some places, marred his chest and his arms. Open cuts and burns from fast contact with something long striped his skin in the worst way possible. Ja managed to remove all that remained of the soiled lab coat and had to suppress his gag reflex at the full sight of the crazy kid he’d learned to love like a little brother.

Quaritch was breathing heavily after crashing back into a workbench, knocking dusty glassware and tools to the ground with shattering and clatters. Wainfleet caught his best friend by the arm before he completely collapsed and helped him to the floor.

“Easy, Miles.” Wainfleet managed to say, purposefully looking at his friend over the kid. He might not be able to contain himself if he looked at Spider...

“My boy...” Quaritch huffed as the own pain in his body burned his senses as the adrenaline receded like floodwaters. He didn’t realize he was starting to hurt all over and drip with sweat from a cold chill.

“Left forearm broken in two places.” Ja said as quietly as he could, but loud enough for the recorder in his vest to pick up. Everyone’s hands were too busy to take notes for him and both of his were needed to inspect the teen’s body while keeping him upright.

Quaritch growled. A terrible kind of strained rumble from his throat. His fury was spiraling, but his body was failing. Blood oozed through his heavily blood-soaked camo pants and continued to drip slowly from a through and through gunshot wound in his left bicep. He may have been hit more than twice, but it didn’t matter.

Quaritch would face a firing squad a hundred times over to save his son from any more pain.

“Lyle, sedation and tourniquet.” Ja said, managing to find rifling through his bag without looking. He tossed them over to where Wainfleet attempted to restrain and console the colonel.

Quaritch thought both were for the boy until they bounced across the floor.

“NO!”, Quaritch roared, “I NEED TO SEE MY BOY! FUCKING STAND DOWN, LYLE!”

“Not following your fucking orders today, Miles.” Wainfleet said, grabbing the syringe and stabbing it into Quaritch’s right thigh as fast as possible.

The impact of Wainfleet’s fist coming down had Quaritch seeing stars and screaming in pain. The air left his lungs, and he couldn’t inhale from the agony. But he did feel strong hands jerk him forward into a powerful embrace of arms around his shoulders. He managed to start breathing again, though hyperventilating was a better way to describe the wheezing from his nostrils as he clenched his jaw tight against the quick-acting sedative.

In those brief microseconds before unconsciousness, Quaritch stared over Wainfleet’s shoulder as his Spider. His sweet boy; the only thing that mattered.

If he didn’t wake up from whatever happened next, Quaritch would be sure to come back a third time just to see his son one last time...
