RIP Marjane Satrapi, author of the amazing graphic novels Persepolis about living during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran in the 70’s and 80’s. She also created the animated movie based on the graphic novels, which is where these gifs come from.

oh my god i almost forgot to tell you all about how, while my dad was visiting, i had an infestation of every single kind of bug in my house that hasn't been a problem before or since. like i'm not kidding i evicted so many creeping crawlies that week and couldn't for the life of me stop mosquitos from stealing my blood, but as soon as he left they vanished. and i mean, sure, there's a perfectly rational explanation, because two people make more mess than one and he has a habit of leaving the windows wide open enough to fly a jet engine through day and night, but i can't help but think how symbolically on the nose it was. the ancestral rot at the heart of my family so gothic it's got ants and flies buzzing around its decaying corpse.
hey so update but i haven't been harassed by a single freaky little beast since my dad left even after leaving some crumbs on the floor as an experiment to see if they attracted any ants so i think my dad might just be bugs actually
one of the funniest conversations I ever had with my ex was when they were still getting used to Celsius and asked me "what's 20 degrees?" and instead of converting it, I said "it's the highest your dad will ever let you set the thermostat and when you say you're cold he tells you to put on another sweater, we're not made of money" and they went "oh, 68"
the fact that this reference was that fucking precise was something they went on to tell people about for years.
The Way Things Have Been Going Lately by Ada Limón
hey does anyone have that poem. about the author seeing two boys cuddling on a hotel lobby couch, where he refers to it as something like an island of safe anonymity or smth. its been 5000 years my college boyfriend had it written out and pinned to his wall
THANK YOU @witchoflight it is indeed "on traveling together" by Kayleb Rae Candrilli
“The couch they’re on is an island i’ve been to.” wow

Posting this for my soul cat Kenzie (she passed a few years ago but I still think of her every single day) and for everyone else who has lost someone they love. ❤️
my friend's discord server has a "proof of touch grass" channel where they post pics of them doing regular activities outdoors/in public. i think many online spaces could benefit from such a thing
when i was super depressed - like struggling to eat anything barely able to get out of bed to pee depressed - my good friend asked me every day to send her a picture of me holding a leaf and a picture of a meal i was eating and it helped me significantly
(also, she was never judgey - if my meal was a single potato chip she would simply say good job eating a potato chip today <3 )
which is to say, i agree proof of touch grass is a good idea for online spaces
This kinda required my brain a bit

hi c ! i hope europe is treating u well ! and i hope ur thesis is going great!
lately ive been thinking a lot about drinking culture, not really about alcohol, but the social expectations around drinking, and the culture we've sort of created, especially in work settings (happy hours after work, expectations of drinking as contrasting with professionalism) and also like in college. i dont know i feel like i didn't explain this particularly well because i havent thought of it that clearly yet, but have you read anything that's kind of in the general area around this so to speak?
hi! funnily enough, i wrote an essay way back in college about how we can write history by studying alcohol consumption patterns in society, so i do have a bunch of fun things you can read:
Drink: A cultural history of alcohol by Iain Gatley
Alcohol and authority in early New South Wales: The symbolic significance of the spirit trade, 1788-1808 by Matthew Allen
Drunken Antics: The Gin Craze, Binge Drinking and the Political Economy of Moral Regulation by Cras Citcher
Binge Drinking: A Confused Concept and its Contemporary History
Social Media, Alcohol Marketing, and Young Adults’ Drinking Cultures by Ian Goodwin, Antonia Lyons
Why Gen Z is drinking less by Solcrye Burga
Towards a Cultural History of Alcohol in France by Thomas Brennan
Alcohol: Anthropological/Archaeological Perspectives by Michael Dietler
hope you find something you like!

there is so much content about changing your life or becoming and it’s like whatever man you’re missing what’s right in front of you. Imperfection is forever.
horse owners are either extremely far right or extremely far left. horseshoe theory but for owning an actual horse. I guess it’s because apolitical moderate weirdos are too weak to steer a horse in either direction. you have to have some sort of conviction to ride a horse, they can tell when you’re wavering and they will ignore you.
