Sometimes when I talk about how "all men are ___" and similar ideas are dangerous, it gets misconstrued as this desire to coddle men or deny misogyny, etc.
I am all for holding men accountable. I do think we should call out petty, controlling, abusive behavior, and I do think men should face consequences for these behaviors.
Because it is important that these men face consequences, it is important to teach people — men who have gotten away without so much as a slap on the wrist, women who enable these behaviors, girls who are told that it is okay to be treated this way, impressionable boys developing their sense of morals — that it is not okay to behave this way.
But the second we start insinuating that these traits are inherently masculine, innate male behaviors, we throw that progress away.
It's true that these behaviors are more common in men, but not for biological reasons. It's because these behaviors have been labeled as acceptable, these behaviors have been encouraged. Which is why it is crucial to say "no, this is not okay, this is unacceptable, and there are consequences to doing this."
When you reduce it biological explanations, you give these behaviors a pass. You're saying, whether you mean to or not, that men are behaving as men do, because they're men, and this is how they operate. Which means that these behaviors are acceptable by virtue of being uncontrollable. That's just how men are. They can't help themselves. It's up to everyone around them to protect themselves, because men are just giving in to their nature.
Which is dangerous reasoning! Yes, absolutely hold men accountable, but remember that they are making the decision to act this way, and that society supports this decision and encourages it. If you want change, you have to present change as an option.
you guys remember supernatural? that shit was good or bad, depending 💯

I kind of wish that the polarities of violence and sex in popular culture were reversed. Like, I wish that writers and filmmakers needed to justify up the wazoo their decisions to show a murder on screen when "they could have just done it tastefully in shadow or something," but no one even batted an eye at a sex scene. I kind of wish that erotic video games were the norm but FPSs were a considered a weird and loser-ish thing to play.
I mean, I really wish that you didn't have to justify either, but it bugs me that, of the two, killing is the one that you can use in wholesome family friendly entertainment but fucking is the one that you forever need to shield your children from even knowing about.
I don't think that this difference is innocent, either. Like, I think that sexual repression is a good means of control whereas the state always needs an army of young men who are willing to kill people.
listen. I understand if you dont want to see sex in a movie. But im begging you to think about how the prevalence of murder and acts of harm being portrayed in media vs. the censorship and hush-hush nature behind sex affects our relationships with it.
think about what this post is saying about the normalization of violence and demonization of eroticism. How sexual repression and the indulgence of violence lets a society be guided in a certain direction.
If you dont want to see a sex scene in a movie, thats fine. But this isnt about personal preferences. This is about how culture is shaped by what we choose to show. For the love of god.
I am a horror movie fan who loves gore and violence and murder, you know, a sicko, and I also think it is extremely weird and unsettling that violence is so much more accepted in media than sex. Compare the kind of violent content you can put in a PG-13 movie with the kind of sexual content allowed. It's fucked up!
Obviously I don't want anyone taking away my horror movies and replacing them with softcore porn or anything, that's not the point. Just... maybe we should be less worried about kids seeing a depiction of consensual sex and more worried about stuff like, idk, being taught that incredibly bloody revenge is a normal way to respond to being harmed, or that the right way to handle criminals is to explode them, or some of the things I think might do more lasting harm than the simple fact of violent imagery.
There was an episode of Deep Space Nine. Back in the... late 90s? I think? That featured a lesbian kiss. This being two or three decades ago now, they received many letters of complaint, a number of them claiming it meant the show was no longer Family-Friendly.
One of the writers responded to one of those letter, asking if it would have been more appropriate for the women to shoot each other with a phaser. He was answered in the affirmative, and his response was that if the person felt it was better for his children to see an act of violence than an act of affection, he might want to reconsider his definition of family-friendly.

If you haven't heard, the em dash has been getting a lot of attention lately…
Because it was trained on pirated work—including freely accessible online writing (like fanfic, academic texts)—ChatGPT picked up patterns and quirks native to human writing.
Including (sigh) the em dash.
There are other victims here (RIP tapestry and delve 🫠), but the appropriation of the em dash—a punctuation mark beloved by writers everywhere—feels especially personal.
A kind of low-grade panic is ensuing. Writers who once memed their own em dash overuse—the greatest punctuation mark ever to grace the control-freak’s lexicon, frankly—are suddenly backing away to avoid accusations.
No. More. We have centuries of dash-abusing writers behind us. We will not sit quietly while AI repurposes our beloved stilted aside—or the just-one-more clarification the sentence demands—or the dramatic pause your comma could never—etc.
You don’t write like AI—AI writes like you.
Defend the em dash.
(Feel free to download/share/stick it where it matters!)
Yet another new study debunked the basis for the anti-trans sports bans. It was never about sports but for creating legal avenues for exclusion and abjection. This is one of the largest analyses ever conducted, involving 52 studies and 6,485 trans people. Read the study here.

Wait I thought everyone did that-
Here we go again with drama in the fandom! The cast post a statement and people are still going insane and fighting and one of the biggest "issues" in the statement is somehow that agism was included in the things the cast is sick of seeing. Also, Francois has already had a number of people on his post calling him out for copying Hudson and doing nothing to defend Hudson etc. so lets just clear it very simply; Francois drafted the statement. He decided to write the statement. He asked Hudson what he thought about it and any tweaks that might need made, Hudson loved the statement and said he wanted to co-sign it. So Francois did, once again, defend his co-stars and this time he also defended himself. This is not the first time he has defended his co-stars. Other cast members have already shared the statement. The cast themselves said they agreed to NOT address the issues within the fandom until today when apparently enough was enough. Francois is not piggy backing off anyone, agism does have the right to be part of the statement (ya know, because people are using his age against him and calling him a pedo of all things because of the rumors of him and 26 year old GROWN ASS ADULT Connor), and most importantly not a single person from this cast should have ever had to make that statement because all of the hate and harassment is disgusting and out of control and still fans are not learning their lesson and he is continuing to try to defend himself and his co-stars (note; Hudson already also mentioned that Francois wrote it so he's clearly not happy with people already getting on Francois case). Remember, we do NOT know these people, they know each other, they should not have to defend themselves or each other let alone have to defend themselves for making a statement DEFENDING THEMSELVES. Touch grass and as Francois would say GTFOH
** the post has now been shared by Francois, Hudson, Rachel, Jacob, Cal, Nadine, Christina, Ksenia, Robbie, and Harrison (as of now)
Listen to the cast and just...be normal. Kindness is really not that hard. I think hate takes more effort than kindness so stop wasting your energy and put good vibes, light, and love into the world.

I love when cats get a claw stuck in your clothes and then act like it's YOUR fault. lil bro I'm literally just clad in garments you're the one with your terror toes deployed
I need everyone’s best character advice. STAT.
You're not creating real people, you're creating the illusion of real people. You don't have to mention their favorite food if it doesn't come up, you don't even have to know it, though if they were actual people they'd have one. You can throw plot events at your characters to force them to take certain actions, or you could just rewrite the characters to be the kind of characters who would take those actions anyway. Your characters have a life of their own in their own little world, but don't be afraid to play god to get what you want out of them.
In the vast majority of cases, a character's strengths and flaws should be the same thing. There are exceptions (you can have a character be clumsy for the lols without needing to find some way that it's an advantage), but for most character traits, the difference between a flaw and a strength is the situation at hand and learning when to indulge it.
desire is the source of action, so your characters should WANT things. all of them should have something they want that's good for them, something they want that's bad for them, and something that's just a little silly, for spice.
Treat your secondary characters like they are the main characters of another story. I don't mean you have to know everything about them, but if their role in the story could be replaced by a cardboard cutout, then the story will feel flat where it encounters them. Give them their own motivation/wants/desires, and it will help you immensely in writing their interactions with the main character, and make the world seem bigger/more real to the reader.
