Days 6-9. I’ve been slacking, but I’m caught up again, at least until tomorrow. Big batch of indie comics-related kaiju (or in two cases, possibly demi-kaiju) this time.
First up is Electrogar, from Zander Cannon’s Kaijumax. It’s my current favorite comic. I somehow doubt the big bug-lizard will be the last cast member who shows up in my posts this month.Â
Next is Duncan from Phil Hester & Andy Kuhn’s Firebreather. I really need to hunt down back issues of this series. I read one random issue and thought it was cool, then totally lost track of it and never got any further. Technically, Duncan might not even count for this list, because I can’t recall if “kaiju” was a term thrown around in the original book, or if it was added for the cartoon (which I based a couple details of my rendition upon). Either way, he’s a pipsqueak and hands-down the smallest being in my monster list for this month.
Third, or technically eighth, is Jack, from Dan Brereton’s awesome painted miniseries Giantkiller. Again, Jack might be only worth partial credit as a human-kaiju hybrid who’s only about 11 feet tall, but I wanted to have representation from Giantkiller, and its hero looks so awesome. For other people doing Kaijuly there’s 25 other great monster designs in Giantkiller, so you should track a copy down. Or just do it because it’s a wonderful overlooked gem of giant monster comics that everyone ought to read.
Lastly, there’s Gograh, from Top 10, by Alan Moore, Gene Ha, and again, Zander Cannon. There’s not a whole lot to him... he’s a washed-up drunken redneck Godzilla analogue, but he’s in the funniest scene of a generally very funny series, and who can resist a giant obese lizard in an ill-fitting t-shirt and slacks? I wanted to get to him last time around and didn’t make it that far, so this year, Gograh was definitely on the to-draw list.
