we have dandelions EVERYWHERE, they are basically our State Weed, it is absolutely impossible that my mom has never interacted with a dandelion before, this requires further investigation

So after extensive interrogation I have an update:

my mom is in fact aware that dandelions exist. she temporarily forgot the name and there was some miscommunication.

the truth is actually weirder

she’s aware dandelions look like this

she is familiar with this flower. she knows the name of this flower. she declines to believe, however, that these are also dandelions

she does not believe these are the same plant. I tried to explain, and she thought I was either misinformed or lying. so I asked her what exactly did she think the yellow ones were called?

she answered, with complete confidence: Daffodils.

“buttercups” is a name applied to MANY flowers. in my part of the south it was this one:

imo there’s correct identifications of dandelions, daffodils, easter lilies and marigolds in this thread, but buttercups are simply impossible to agree on and the only solution is for everyone to post pictures of their local buttercups

I don’t think we ought to normalize or justify bullying as a means to keep people from being annoying — a sentiment that in and of itself could make for a whole article’s worth of conversation — but I do think we should make a habit of politely but directly telling people “hey I didn’t like that”, “that wasn’t funny”, “you are mistaken”, and the like if it’s called for, and more importantly, you should be able to take a “that wasn’t funny” for instance without taking it personally, because protecting a polite harmony where no one can criticize each other, not even politely, is also really, really bad.

hey heads up if you're getting into film photography as the kids seem to be doing these days (i did this in my late teens/early 20s): black and white film is super easy to develop at home and doesnt need a darkroom, just a dark bag. Community darkrooms are around, you just gotta go lookin

if you dont have a community darkroom but you do have a few friends in on the hobby it's very useful to pool and share development equipment and chemicals. they come in large quantities, and they're not particularly toxic (DO read the labels for safety/disposal). you can even DIY the chemicals you need that will come out probably "worse" but might look cool anyways

scanning/printing takes a different set of equipment but you can also DIY a lightbox and a phone camera rig then invert the colors to take pictures of the film to get b&w positives

if you are lucky enough to have a community darkroom you will learn so much, not just how to develop film. oldheads love to help with old cameras and students are ALWAYS doing this shit. b&w photography is ALWAYS cool

each variety of film has its own development timetable based on ISO so you'll have to look it up buy that's all on the internet. once you get handy with it you can learn to push/pull, scan the sprockets, and other fun shit

if your community darkroom has a print lab you're in luck because there's even more cool shit to do there. those buttons in photoshop got their names from somewhere
