I'm so tired of seeing the argument that book Gabrielle would never have sent Lestat out to die with the wolves because it almost never acknowledges the changes in circumstances.
I don't think show Gabriella would have done that either if Lestat was still 20 years old and full of life, and she still had hope that he'd escape their shared imprisonment.
Aging up Lestat is something that was done in season 1, and it had ripple effects on EVERYTHING that led up to his turning. In the book, he's 20 years old, and he's still full of hope and joy and EMOTION. And Gabrielle still has hope for him, and it's part of why she keeps trying to get him OUT before that part of him can be killed.
In the show, he's in his 30s. He's grown cold like his mother because he saw it was the only way she survived. He's miserable and probably the only triumph he has is that he's resisted marriage and family. He and Gabriella have been trapped together for over a decade as adults in this bleak and horrifying situation.
Lestat has lost hope, and Gabriella has lost hope for him. And she knows she's dying. It's bleak, but trying to provide him a quick death as opposed to leaving him to suffer the abuse by himself as she once did WAS a mercy, and it was an act of love. And yes, Gabriella's love is really fucked up.
I absolutely believe Gabriella loved Lestat and continues to love him, and I believe that on some level she's disgusted with herself for loving him, and that is one of the reasons she abuses him and uses incest to corrupt their relationship and tries to maintain control over him. I think she resents him for being both her son and her maker, and I think she loves him and wishes she didn't, and it's just one of the parallels between them because he's as much as stated that he loves her and wishes he didn't.
reblog if youâre asexual, support asexual people or really really want a crossbow for literally no reason.
Wh-what do you mean itâs from a birthday cake
We could have been eating him
that is the face of a man worried he will be next
Good news, he was not next! In fact, she accepted him as her mate, he learned the crane mating dance and now every year, he artificially inseminates her with crane semen to expand the very endangered crane population. True story.
Sorry, he WHAT? Imagine being this man's boss and having to sit him down like. Listen. Brian. We need you to fuck the bird. You have to act like you're excited about it.
crane husband.....
this is the diametric opposite of all those awful swan wife stories and i love it.
(WalWaPo makes you jump through like three separate hoops before you can read the article, so I will share some of the highlights:
Walnut was born in a species-recovery breeding program in the 1980âČs. The program had crane chicks hand-raised by human volunteers, and at that time they did not fully understand the measures necessary make sure that the chicks do not imprint on humans and retain their identity as cranes. Â
As a result, her keepers believe, Walnut does not recognize other cranes as members of her own species. Â
It has not been proven that Walnut killed her previous suitors; however, there is a persistent rumor in the white-naped-crane-conservation community that she did. Â
Because this species is highly endangered, and the gene pool of the captive population is small, itâs pretty important for the survival of her species that Walnut A) mate, and B) not kill a bunch of other cranes. Â
The actual name of the keeper is Chris Crowe.
They both arrived at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in 2004. Â
Walnut immediately began paying special attention to Chris--and ignoring the eligible male crane in a nearby enclosure. Â
Walnut initiated their courtship, performing the opening moves of a mating dance. Â
Chris realized that if he reciprocated the mating dance, it might be possible to artificially inseminate Walnut with her participation and consent. (The process normally involves restraining the bird.) Â
It worked! Â
Chris and Walnut have had five children, who were raised by other crane couples at the facility--sometimes the biological dad and his mate--both because itâs unclear whether Walnut would accept the chicks as her own, and because Chris is not equipped to be a Crane Dad. Â
However, the Institute provides her with artificial eggs to sit on, and Chris takes his turn looking after them. (This would not work with real eggs because he canât sit on them properly, but Walnut seems to feel that he is on the job if he just stands over them.)
Chris accepts that he is pretty much married to this bird. White-naped cranes live to be about 60, and they mate for life, so he knows he canât retire while Walnut is alive. (At the time of the article, Walnut was 36, and Chris 42.) Â
Legit cannot pick the funniest part of this
she has not been PROVEN to have killed her exes, but there is a PERSISTENT RUMOR (really officers she's simply DEVASTATED, she sobs, wearing a new feather boa unfortunately resembling her most recent deceased husband)
His name is Chris CROWE. (Mrs. Walnut Crane-Crowe?)
the mental images of a whole human man learning and performing the crane mating dance, and "sitting" on artificial eggs so she thinks he's performing his duties as a husband and father (and apparently OBJECTS if he does not?)
"chris, buddy, you gotta marry the possibly-murderous crane lady for the GOOD OF THE SPECIES." (alternately: "chris, my man! good news! we found you a very interested lady! She's 36, she's very spirited and independent, she holds a very important and rare status in her society! ...Is there a downside? WELL...")
chris sits any potential human partners down, like "my love, you must understand before we wed,,, i am already... Attached" (camera drifts wistfully to the above photo) "Lady Walnut and I have an,, Understanding... the relationship is open, but very committed"
just had to explain this post to my father bc he thought my stifled laughter was a signal of illness.
well done, everyone, good game. hit the showers.
Not only is he 'married' to walnut, this has apparently happened SEVERAL times, so he has MULTIPLE crane wives, none of which know about any of his other crane wives. This man is, for some unknown reason, irresistible to cranes
the âthis content has been removed for violating Tumblrâs Community Guidelinesâ notice really adds a lot of flavor to this post and somehow makes it MORE obscene than whatever that actually was
World Heritage Post
I regret being the bearer of bad news, but I thought it should be shared that Walnut passed away in January of this year (2024). There's a lot of mixed info about the lifespan of cranes (due to people misunderstanding what a median is...) but the average for most species I know of is 20-30 years (in the wild if nothing eats them/they don't die young), and 30-45 in captivity, with the oldest known white-naped crane having loved to be 46. Given that she was 42, this old gal did good, and I'm certain she will be missed by folks here.
Fly on forever Walnut Crane-Crowe
One thing I genuinely appreciate about this season is that it doesn't ever do abuse apologism (or at least hasn't so far) it only shows you why it happened and that it didn't stem from a vacuum
Nothing has put that in starker focus to me than the reshooting of the lestat forces Claudia to watch Charlie burn but from his perspective:
Look at it from Claudia's perspective:
Lestat looks at the flames but his head is angled at claudia, as if makimg sure he's causing her pain. For the viewer, that means he's looking towards us from below in that classic villain lear. The visual language couldn't be clearer, he's deliberately cruel and he's the villain because that's what he (rightfully) is to Claudia in that moment. Her uncle les, one of the two people she came to in her hour of greatest heartbreak, and instead of supporting her as a father should he make stare her trauma in the face ...
To teach her a lesson
And that's where we come to the second version of this, the one from lestat's perspective:
The moment is the same, the pose is the same. Lestat in his telling isn't denieing that he did exactly what claudia described: he held her face in his much stronger hands and forced her to watch as her first love burned to ashes. That happened. He WAS that cruel. But he wasn't enjoying it. this is still a recollection told from a perspective, so this image isn't the objective truth either but it's an emotional truth and here lestat doesn't look like he gets a deliberate cruel pleasure from doing this. He looks frozen, stoic. Imo there are several ways one could interpret this look. To me he looks as if he has told himself that this is his duty, hardening her like this, and so that's what he does
It's a refraiming of Lestat's emotional truth regarding this scene but it doesn't change the scene, it doesn't change the fact that he held her face and made her stare into the flames. Lestat reckons in the episode with all the ways his mother fucked him up (why did you take me to see the witches burning?) And then louis' texts come in and he has to confront all the ways he fucked his own daughter up in turn. It's a reckoning and it is so badly needed ... but it still happened and she's still dead

man...
I once tried to explain depression to someone as like if one day you gradually started to lose both your sense of taste and your ability to feel full. And you donât know why, but now everything you eat tastes like mashed potatoes and nothing you eat is satisfying. You keep eating because you must eat to live, but the effort that it takes to prepare food is taxing and there is no pay off. You just know it will taste like mashed potatoes. You just know you will still be hungry. So you stop bothering with seasonings. Then you stop bothering to use ingredients you used to like. Then you start to wonder what the point of eating is because there is no payoff. You still feel hungry and youâre sick of the taste and you donât know if you will ever enjoy food again and you donât know why this is happening.
If someone comes up to you in this scenario and says, âWell have you tried spicing your food? Using different ingredients? Eating foods you used to love?â It isnât necessarily helpful because the reason you stopped doing all that in the first place is that everythingâŠtastedâŠlike mashedâŠpotatoes.
This. Completely this.

gothic horror is when there's a location. cosmic horror is when there's an unauthorized fucking Thing. folk horror is when you're outside.
counterpoint
cosmic horror is when the Thing is Not Familiar, the Location Makes No Fucking Sense, and the Outside is BIG.
gothic horror is when The Thing is Of Your Own Making, the Location has a Deeply Bloody History, and the Outside is Wet and Cold and Is Caging You In.
folk horror is when the Thing Should Be Familiar, But Is Not, the Location Should Be Pleasing, But Is Not, and the Outside is Trying Very Hard To Kill You
fiction can be really dangerous there might be a deeply tragic woman in there who starts living in your head forever
Washington Post is paywalling the article but it looks like Taylor Farms â a consumer bagged salad brand that also supplies produce to grocers and fast food chains like Taco Bell, Walmart, McDonald's, Chipotle, Burger King, KFC, and Meijer âmay be at least one of the sources of the current cyclosporiasis outbreak.
Taylor makes bagged greens, salad kits, chopped salads, the works. Keep avoiding supermarket greens, but keep an especially close eye out for this brand/supplier. The above list of grocers and fast food chains is NOT exhaustive, so please continue getting lettuce and other raw produce taken off your burgers, sandwiches, etc.
Shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and sold at some Taco Bell restaurants has been linked to a multistate outbreak of cyclosp
Non-paywalled article now on CNN.
Hey Canadian pals, this company does have produce sold in Canada, notably ready-to-eat salads at Sobey (safeway, thrifty foods, IGA, etc.) and Loblaw (superstore, shoppers, etc.) stores. So while no outbreaks here have been linked to the massive issue in the US (yet), it might be a good time for a bit of caution.
[image description: a headline that reads, "lettuce supplier identified as potential source of cyclospora outbreak. the cdc has linked the taylor farms produce supplied to taco bell to the outbreak of the parasitic illness, according to two persons familiar with the investigation." the article was published on july 16, 2026. end description.]
