This is a sideblog where I brainrot about Khaenri'ah and make hcs bc I am always weak to "destroyed forgotten home" feels and an interest in Celtic/Nordic mythology

Will include:

Headcanons about the culture

Theories about what went down, lore hypotheticals, and philosophical rambles

Basically OC-ifying NPCs (please join me) + known Khaenri'ah-affiliated characters

Admittedly a lot of focus on Dainsleif because he's my blorbo

Celtic/Nordic mythology/history research, mostly for said hcs and theories

(As admin, I am not much of a shipper and would prefer most asks or add-ons to not be of such, but we'll figure it out.)

Note: Admin is also *very* much not into romantic Dainsleif and Abyss Twin. I won't outright deny any asks/discussions about them, but I prefer analyzing such relationships regardless of romance or not.

this is more of a reflection of the admin's personal opinion than their view on kh as a whole but i keep being so scared that they're going to ruin the writing of the sinners

rhinedottir is probably going to get off super easy with her being part of the hexenzirkel because technically it's not her fault that the monsters she created went on a rampage and killed thousands of people, right? or that surtalogi has massacred entire planets but he hasn't hurt teyvat so it's fine. we're not sure what the others have actively done, vedr may have been a spectator, but y'know.

yeah, the game was a moving baseline for what is 'evil' and the traveler certainly isn't a hero and neither are most of their allies, but if dottore is deposited as a villain, the sinners shouldn't get off easy just because they were people once. so was zandik!

maybe they were affected by the abyss and made so much worse but they still have to acknowledge their choices were their own actions. unless it's the past kh versions of them before they committed their crimes, i say the sinners should pay their dues

it’s so magical and beautiful that there are sprawling interconnected cave systems carved deep into the earth by various geological forces and you don’t have to go in them. there are miles and miles of stone passageways in total darkness that require you to exhale all the air out of your lungs to squeeze through parts of them and you don’t have to be there. some of these squeezes are underwater and require cave divers to take off their oxygen tanks and push them through ahead of them and me i am above ground looking at the sky as we speak. there are untold subterranean wonders no human has ever seen and i will not be the one to discover them #grateful #blessed

new hc that clothes were a symbol of status even more so than in normal medieval-time societies

clothes were very hard to make down in kh (points to no sun, no fiber plants?) and most (natural) cloth had to be imported

so most people had 2 sets of clothes (normal and perhaps sleepwear), if lucky they had 3 (for fancier events)

to have more than a few pieces of clothes, particularly ones that aren't all alchemical-plant synthetics, signified you could afford quite a lot, let alone the fancier imported stuff (like knights having fancy official uniforms is a Big Deal)

Honestly i want to see how khaenri’ahn wedding looked like. Did they even have weddings (or some similar tradition)?

Totally not for the selfish reason of having my ocs marry in a khaenri’ahn fashion.

ok first and foremost sorry for the delay i liked this ask soooo sooo much that I had to wait until I was good to answer it please keep these types of stuff coming

behold, sleepless's delusional headcanons for your average khaenri'ahn wedding:

1. For a long while I was really subscribed to the idea of engagement swords (in viking fashion), but Rerir's memories confirmed that they DID infact use rings, so there's that. I do still like to play around with the idea of some unconventional proposal object every now and then.

2. ooooh capes. I know they normally wear capes anyhow but I like to imagine they had special ultra embroidered capes for their weddings. If we lean into our shared clan sigils headcanon then maybe the couple's combined clan motifs embroidered on their capes? Very fun. One thing I'm really torn on is their wedding attire color. Cause they're wearing mostly white on a normal day already. Mayhaps they didn't have a rule for the coloring at all as long as the capes were involved

3. For the partying level I think there's the actual wedding ceremony where its very medieval europe catholic church, and then there's the wedding feast/after party which is "at least three people twist their ankle on the table they're dancing on and fall and die" sort of situation. Khaenri'ahns do canonically enjoy their alchohol is all im saying. HOWEVER it does depend on the families of the couple/circumstances as well.

4. THE CEREMONY!! I think they had the hand binding tradition but BUT, and again this depends on the family/circumstances, snakes instead of ribbons. Please bear with me here, Two (specially trained??) snakes, each starting from the arm of one couple, crawling towards the other and wrapping around the other snake, so at one point their joined hands are enveloped by two snakes wrapped around eachother, and then finally the snakes end up on the opposite person they started from, before being removed and CONGRATS YOU CAN KISS. Or just one going from one's arm to the other but thats not as symbolic. do you see the vision its so them

5. Sometimes I entertain the idea of something signifying marital statues like a special braid in your beard or something, but I have thus far never been able to come up with one satisfying enough/not repetitive. So feel free to share any ideas

6. All in all, it seems like their marriages had both a traditional side and a "progressive"/ more modern side depending on who you were. Rerir proposes to Tholindis and she decides to sit down and really think about their situation and future before answering him, meanwhile its implied that Chlothar's family were about to auction him off, so.

The different cultures in khaenri’ah definitely influenced some weddings. If you’d had Mondstadtian ancestry you are more likely to incorporate some customs (that can be remade to be non-religious in that sense) or if you were inazuman you also brought customs from there. So no wedding is the same for the majority of khaenri’ahns.

YESS YESS ABSOLUTELY. khaenri'ah was very clearly a multi cultural society and I feel like weddings of all things reflected that. maybe if you were mondstadtian and also filthy rich you could afford dandelion wine import lmao. hope you two don't mind me adding on my two cents but i've been thinking about the class system and how marriages were structured bc like. arranged marriages had to be a thing, right? but for kh royalty, if they (likely) didn't marry anyone from above ground, who did they marry? whichever political/noble group they wanted to uplift the most within khaenri'ah?

also pure-blood marriages were probably pushed... but not 100% sure if purebloods were mostly the noble class bc we really don't have much about the class and heritage system

Arranged marriages were a thing for sure, and we also know that transnational marriages, at least for the noble, were likely frowned upon >> as evident by the fact that Chlothar had to hide his lover and eventually fathered an illegitimate child.

as for the pure blood thing, ONCE AGAIN rerir's memories come to clutch, because he appears to be pureblooded, and yet him being an insignificant nobody was emphasised over and over by both himself and the quest. So we can safely assume that whilst are nobles were pureblooded, not all purebloods were nobles.

noticed that a lot of folks who draw younger (pre-cataclysm) dain with basically the same length hair but with his ears exposed which is funny but makes sense. his hair is cleaner and well-kept before the cataclysm and shows a sense of exposure in a way

i'm not sure if this is intentional in everyone's drawings but ppl really go 'shaggy cat -> (past) clean cat'

minor worldbuilding nitpick but how the fuck did khs clothe themselves if they didn't have am artificial sun and therefore couldn't grow cloth-producing plants underground

(and no i don't think an ENTIRE nation could survive purely on cloth imports from aboveground)

okay so mainly, no, it does not seem so! anfortas alberich took over after irmin became indisposed, and kaeya's dad wrote "Remember always that it was the Alberich Clan, who did not have royal blood, who stepped in as regents when the strength of the one-eyed king Irmin failed."

and then chlothar went off and founded the abyss order but like. who knows if anfortas and chlothar knew each other. could have been weird distant cousins.

which also makes it interesting as to how arle has crimson moon powers when (checks notes) the CM dynasty turned into the Eclipse dynasty during the archon war, which ended at least 2000 years ago but the switch could have happened any time before that. most likely, arle is prob descended from the CM royal bloodline or smth similar for her to have that power. still, that's 2000+ years for a bloodline to persist before any of its members turn immortal, and even pierro assumed it had gone extinct, so. ?????

but i have also come into a new realization that dainsleif's character description/"prophecy" is not a past one, but instead a future one (probably spoken to him by vedrfolnir during new khaenri'ah). i can make another post explaining that but it brings my attention back to this line:

"...(in this time inopportune) the eclipse is swallowed by the crimson moon."

so. in the past, it was CM -> Eclipse. now it seems it will be Eclipse -> CM. we will probably get more Crimson Moon legacy characters, but. idk. arlecchino rules new khaenri'ah or smth /j

ohoho, she's probably (somehow) a perinheri descendant... which makes it doubly ironic for her to end up guiding the house of hearth aka fatui version of CM's orphanage.

so. overall, i honestly have no idea what arle's role is going to be or where she comes from, but she sure brings a fuckton of questions. (like. are these possible kh descendants in the dark sea? is new kh going to be there? who fucking knows)

pt. 2 bc i'm realizing i didn't actually talk about arle that much aside from theories but like. kaeya and arle/peruere parallels actually. kids that just got fucking dropped off in teyvat with no explanation and either aren't telling us anything or don't remember anything (maybe both)

but at least we know kaeya had a dad, whoever the hell that was. but someone had to have named peruere. someone must have known perinheri's legend and the curse of the crimson balemoon and therefore named her "after the latin perurere, which means "to burn" or "to be consumed by fire."

i now believe enjou spent time in khaenri'ah merely to fuck around and cause problems. one of dain's knights found him in the restricted section of the royal archives and dragged him to the captain by the scruff

(enjou helped chlothar get in but shhhhhh no one has to know that)

okay y'know what. my biggest nitpick with kh lore tidbits is the whole "we struggle to grow plants" thing bc. synthetic sun/light is one of the EASIEST things to achieve in technology, even if they didn't have access to pyro/electro down there

pump a whole lot of azosite in there. even enkanomiya had an artificial sun. why couldn't khaenri'ah in the (checks notes) 6000 years it existed???

tbf they didn't say in tomes of science but they're still saying teyvat doesn't have a damn sun. do they survive off the fake sky? is the sun fake? are they surviving off a cluster of big bright stars??? literally everything in genshin is about the moons but are the moons producing their own light??

i do know there's the solar chariot and all that, but there's just been zero lore on that or a sun beyond the false sky and everything on the moons

i HAVE been wondering why there seems to be so little sun mythology in genshin
