Sleepy boys 💤
Wow! This is amazing!!
i saw someone say nobody needs to know what a .txt file is anymore. what the fuck is the world coming to
unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service (hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
Well played Merriam-Webster.

Friendly reminder that you're not required to publicly take sides in any geopolitical conflict you don't understand.
tags too good to leave in tags @hyperrbolic-orange
also way too valuable to leave in tags! from @carolinanadeau
I would additionally posit that you’re not required to take sides in ANY issue you don’t fully understand and that sometimes, even when you do fully understand an issue, you will need to be silent on it for very real and practical reasons that you do not (and should not) explain to anyone lest you put yourself and others in danger. This should just be something we are all generally aware of. Infosec is important!!!
'provide an understanding, affirming welcome to all the people crashing out of being fire-eating MAGA types over this Epstein stuff' is, tactically speaking, probably one of the more important organizing tasks in American politics right now.
Which makes me doubly glad I am neither a professional organizer nor American. But like, some of you guys probably do need to get to the grindstone on that.
It is deeply conflicting.
Because, if this is making even one person begin to question the cult, to see through the con, that is objectively a good thing. We shouldn't push those people back into MAGA just for the satisfaction of telling them to go fuck themselves.
But also this and so many other reasons not to support him were obvious for about a decade now.
And literally hundreds of thousands if not millions of people have died (USAid cuts alone, even) because people idolized and voted for quite possibly literally the worst person humanity has ever produced.
I honestly don’t think most of those people should be welcomed to anything. Many don’t regret the harm they caused, and reveled in. This was no difference of opinion, it was a wide-scale effort to strip personal rights and social safety nets.
The fuck-you got-mine attitude they embraced isn’t gone. They are still mostly quite happy with the absolute destruction the current administration has wreaked on the country and the world.
They mostly just don’t want to be known as a group of pedo protectors, even though that’s what they were doing all along. The Trump-Epstein friendship came to light before Trump’s very first term. It’s never been a secret.
The Trump supporters haven’t changed. Without admittance of guilt and actual effort to atone there can’t be forgiveness.

Okay but like. They will be welcomed to something. And Trump did in fact win the last election and now been fairly blatantly (if amateurishly) purging and politicizing the state apparatus with gusto ever since.
Given the balance of political forces in the country I'm not sure you can be too squeamish about opportunities to start converting potential new partisans, is all.
People seem to forget that elections are about quantity not quality. You don't get credit for having the most morally pure voting bloc.
I'll get more satisfaction from opposition politicians leaving office than opposition voters feeling bad after I make angry noises at them.
To draw a very literal comparison: A major concern with rehabilitating people who've finished their jail terms is finding them jobs and somewhere to live, as many businesses and real estate offices won't hire or rent houses to people with a criminal conviction. And superficially, that's a comprehensible policy! Given the choice between housing/employing someone with a record and someone who doesn't, most places will choose the latter. But enforcing this position doesn't magically stop ex-cons from existing, and unless your position is that, regardless of the type or severity of the offence, they should all be in jail forever, then at some point, if you want them to even have a chance at rehabilitation, then they're going to need housing, and they're going to need jobs, and - ideally - someone to help them navigate those things, such that recidivism doesn't seem like their best option. Because that's what overwhelmingly happens when you make it difficult or impossible for ex-cons to legally work or find housing: they end up homeless, and they revert to crime, which decreases everyone's overall safety and quality of life. Are some criminals utterly unrepentant and/or incapable of turning their lives around? Yes. Can you always tell at a glance which ones they are? No. But even if you could, it's still better, at bare minimum, to have those people housed and guaranteed access to food and whatever medications they might need to function, particularly if you're then going to complain about crime and violence among the homeless population. Because the people in question don't just stop existing if you decide they don't merit aid.
This is by no means a perfect comparison, but the key point is this: even if you, personally, do not have the necessary bandwidth or inclination to attempt the rehabilitation of MAGA who are just now realizing they've been in a cult, that is still necessary work that someone should, ideally, be doing, if only to lower the chance of those people causing more harm in the future. Are some of them irredeemable? Absolutely. Are adults still responsible for their own bad choices? Yes. But we're a social species, rehabilitation of all kinds is hard work, and people in crisis do better with help. It might be grim, frustrating, thankless work, but so is public sanitation, and if nobody was willing to shovel shit, we'd all be neck-deep in typhoid.

those gay firefighters are making me realise what it must have been like to be a non-supernatural watcher on tumblr in 2014 like brother i don't know which one of these men is which but for all your sakes i hope they kiss
I don't know who the firefighters in question are but I can confirm it was like that
So a couple things on this. I can appreciate what is being gone for - that without European colonialism, the Americas would have developed radically differently from what they are today (note that the big header of "prior" differs from the actual image caption which puts it in 2015, making it alt-history).
But while Central America absolutely had conquering empires, particularly the Aztecs, North American tribes almost universally vehemently reject any notion that they have anything in common with Western imperialism, so seeing all sorts of "Empires" and "Supremacies" on this map ain't great.
Also a lot of the names on here were given by Europeans - "Iroquois" is a French name. The peoples who actually lived there called themselves Haudenosaunee. There's actually a really cool historical map showing how then modern New York would have been subdivided:
On top of that, the stark borders on the map are also a Western invention. Not only should there be more tribes represented, but there should be more blurring and fuzziness between them. Here's an example:
Pre-Columbian America was very different from pre-Columbian Europe. It wasn't more "primitive", nor was it more "advanced", it was different.
Drin gwiinzii, y'all
Fuck that first map. Have this one instead.
