Not to be rhe ten millionth person to say “USAmerican President Donald Trump Is An Incoherent Public Speaker Whose Train Of Thought Can Be Best Described As Scat Jazz” but I just remembered that when he talks at international events it is several dozen people’s job to translate what he’s saying and what he intends to say to world leaders in real time
And I desperately wish to hear how they do it
If anyone reading this isn’t fluent enough in English to understand the sentences that man says, please know that he has essentially mixed a number of adjectives and topics together in a hat and is pulling them out at random like a horrible children’s game
Like that waxy jaundiced bitch will straight up be like “J'étais sur internet l'autre jour – internet, la plus grande invention américaine. Et la Chine a “internet aussi. Pas un bon internet, pas comme le mien, j'ai un internet formidable. Les gens me disent : « Donald, ton internet est génial ! » On adore l'internet de Donald. Mais la Chine… Chine, Chine, Chine… And people will lose their minds
International translators have had this problem for A While - if they *don't* clean up what he says to sound coherent, they look like they're doing a bad job.
Explore Trump translation challenges, tips for interpreters, and 2025 strategies for accurate political translation and Trumpslation success
oh my god
There was a scandal in Poland because one translator decided to translate him accurately, tone, vocabulary level and word salad tangents and all. Polish conservatives who don't speak English and previously only heard smoothed out translations that sounded coherent and used big words were up in arms about how the translator was "inserting her political agenda", "mocking him", "exaggerating", "purposefully trying to make him look bad" and "incredibly unprofessional". I listened to the translation in question. It was literally just accurate.
5. Sensitive and Controversial Language Trump’s speeches occasionally contain misogynistic, sexist, or inflammatory language. Japanese interpreter Tsuruta, for example, faced challenges when translating sexualized remarks, ultimately opting for standard terminology to maintain professionalism. Similarly, Chinese translator Kumiko Torikai found certain lewd expressions ethically challenging, ultimately leading to her retirement. Navigating these situations requires skillful balancing of accuracy, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity, ensuring that the translation is appropriate without distorting the original intent.
I don't know why the authors of PoliLingua act as if Trump's verbal misogyny and racism wasn't very much part of his "original intent".
it only now dawns on me that millions of people on this planet think Trump is way smarter than he is because translators have neglected to relate his violent speech accurately out of misunderstood politeness. Make the ape sound like a ape
We had a mini-scandal in the German translation/interpretation community last year about exactly this – the interpreter for the inauguration got sick of Trump's incoherence and made a remark into his mic that was not intended to be heard (here's my post on it).

calling ppl "larpers" to insinuate theyre fake fans of smth/poorly pretending to be smth is so fucking stupid cuz. tell me u have never met a real LARPer without saying u have never met a real LARPer. those guys care. they are fucking locked in dude. like LARP is a lifestyle its a commitment they care so much. they're not fake nerds either like fake nerds just repost LOTR gifsets and talk about how nerdy they are for being into like, fucking batman and stuff. LARPers know their shit. they read the whole Silmarillion. they know who Ambush Bug is. like get LARP's name out of your fucking mouth
The word "posers" is ripe for a comeback.

This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
everyone who reblogs this and is like "I ordered my own tea this week" or "I only barfed once when I had to give a presentation'- you are doing amazing sweetie. Have patience with yourself, you are relearning a skill so difficult that people get 4 year degrees to do it professionally.

Googled something about quick hydration and it suggested big jug of water, couple tbsp pickle juice, dash of lime juice.
Its surprisingly tasty????
Pleased to report that after a day of this i am not longer craving caper brine and my mouth is not dry as usual. There's some good suggestions in the notes too that I want to try.
-ancient roman posca: water, red or white wine vinegar, honey, salt, herbs (coriander, mint, thyme)
-switchel: water, ginger, vinegar, sweetener, lemon, salt
-ayran: yogurt, water, salt, mint
-Agua pepino: water, cucumbers, lime, sugar, optional mint.
I have been reminded of:
-shrub: vinegar, sida water, elderberry (or other berry), sugar.
I have now been informed of
-sekanjabin: honey, vinegar, mint, water.

there's so much focus on rocky being exposed to oxygen while sacrificing himself to save grace and then "oh yeah and the 29 atm difference must've also been bad" gets thrown in at the end when like. eridian bodies have no immune system so they are very likely hermetically sealed from the outside to protect themselves from deadly pathogens. you know what happens to a water balloon in a vacuum?
"his internal organs caught fire" brother in christ he imploded. eridians got water in em, and that water probably boiled him alive. in-shell space crab instant hotpot style.
Honestly if Rocky did the full explosive decompression thing seen in the movie, with 29 atmospheres in his habitat, I think realistically Rocky would not survive, Grace would not survive, and the Hail Mary surviving is questionable. The problems with this include:
At Rocky's 210 *C body temperature, the vapor pressure of water is 19 bars. Luckily his body is supposed to contain large pressure gradients because that's how his muscles work, but I'm not sure if the entire volume of water in his body is in containers that can withstand 19 bars of internal pressure. A human's blood doesn't boil in our blood vessels in a vacuum, but we're at a much lower temperature so the vapor pressure is much lower. I think his coolant loop is at least full of mercury so the pressure wouldn't blow his radiator tubes open? Any internal boiling of water in Rocky's body shouldn't cook his organic tissue since whatever his cells are made of can already withstand those temperatures, but if the barotrauma ruptures his cells he's screwed.
A large pressure vessel at 29 bars and 210 *C has a fucking obscene amount of stored mechanical energy. Suddenly opening that to air is immensely destructive. Rocky's habitat would be over 3x the pressure of a semi truck tire, and also around 3x the pressure of the Byford Diving Bell. When this was accidentally depressurized from 9 bars to 1 bar in an instant, it caused a man standing in the pressurized chamber next to the opening to be smashed through a narrow crescent shape opening so forcefully that he was ripped apart and his internal organs were sent flying, with pieces of him flung up to 10 meters in the air. Rocky's body would become a cannonball, flinging him across the Hail Mary at high speeds, and the expanding ammonia might even create a hazardous shock wave.
1 cubic meter of ammonia at 29 bar and 210 *C expands into about 17 cubic meters of ammonia at 1 bar and 20 *C (not 29 cubic meters because adiabatic expansion cools it down so the T term in PV = nRT decreases. I'm assuming a final temperature of 20 *C after mixing and equalizing in temperature with the air inside the Hail Mary's main habitat). This is not good because it means that there is a gigantic volume of anhydrous ammonia released into the cabin. However, it's actually worse because the Hail Mary is at 0.21 bars. At that pressure, the ammonia would expand by a factor of over 80. Assuming the Hail Mary has a pressurized volume of 500 m^3 (this is half that of the ISS, which is built for six people to live and work in for months at a time, and the Hail Mary is built for 3 people to live and work in for several months), and Rocky's ball has a volume of about 1 m^3, rupturing it would release enough ammonia that if evenly mixed into the ship's entire pressurized volume it would result in an atmosphere of about 14% ammonia (remainder is oxygen). This is very bad for two reasons: first, because breathing more than 0.5% ammonia will kill a human being in minutes. And second, because 14% is very close to the lower explosive limit for ammonia in air, so a mixture of just ammonia and oxygen at that concentration I think may be flammable. The initial temperature of the ammonia might not set it off since it would immediately cool as it expanded, but it is potentially turning the entire goddamn ship into an environment where any source of ignition, such as static electricity, could turn it into a bomb.
...okay this is the first time I ran the numbers on the sheer amount of ammonia released, and... I'm sorry Andy but I'm skeptical that you fully math'd this one out, buddy. I would really like to see the calculations on how Grace could still have functioning lungs or eyes after that.

The most popular website as you type in "recipes" into google have sections where you click dinner- quick and easy and those usually rely on staples + 1 or 2 items. I found 30 recipes on chicken alone.
