Having a traumatic childhood means you cannot talk even objectively about your basic foundational experiences without it being "venting", even if you're not actually venting. You just straight up have a huge chunk of your life you can't talk about, full stop, without it being trauma dumping.
And it not being socially acceptable to talk about your own childhood is super alienating. Sometimes people want to know why, and any answer you can give them is going to be off putting.
It's to the point I get irritated when something I said is framed as venting when I'm literally just talking about my life experiences, doing my best to keep emotion out of it.
when I was in high school, I overheard two older students talking about a friend of theirs.
One of them said something like, "it doesn't bother me that [Friend] was in residential mental health treatment, I just wish they wouldn't talk about it ALL the time".
The other replied, "Well, that was all of last year for them. So when they say 'when I was in treatment,' it's like when you say 'last year'."
I try to remember that any time someone says something that sounds Shocking to me. sometimes one person's scary special crisis is another person's last year.
If you want to be accepting of mental illness, you need to accept the fact that some people's everyday lives are going to be terrifying to you. That doesn't mean they don't get to talk about it. Stop forcing hurt, isolated people to become even MORE hurt and isolated because you can't fathom toughening up a bit.
Sanders Sides is almost a decade old
I dislike this realization
how dare you remind me of the passage of time.
I know this is a deeply American thing to say but I am begging everyone to stay the fuck away from military recruiters. Especially high school kids. You are going to be seeing an unholy amount of them in schools or around schools or literally anywhere kids are known to congregate. THIS INCLUDES ALL FORMS OF ROTC. Stay the fuck away from military recruiters. As someone who’s familiar with entirely too many branches through entirely too many friends and family, including my partner, recruiters are authorized to say literally any fucking thing they think will make you sign on that line. They cannot and will not deliver on those promises. They need bodies for the war they’re pretending is only now starting up again. That’s all you are. A body. Stay the FUCK away from the military.
Reiterating because this cannot be overstated:
RECRUITERS CAN AND WILL LIE TO GET YOU TO JOIN. THEY ARE ENCOURAGED TO SAY WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET MORE ENLISTMENTS.
Not only that, this country has a long and storied history of veterans having to fight tooth and nail to get the benefits they are owed by the American government. There’s a reason there are so many homeless veterans.
UK here. My friend's older sister told me that back in 2009, she sat through a careers fair where the visiting army propagandist said "Whatever career you want to do, you can do it in the army!", e.g, "we need entertainers and cooks, too!"
Never work for the military.

My wife pointed out to me the other day that apparently most people were literally only taught how to say Sorry and not how to Apologize or even that they are different things so here.
If all you ever do is step 1, not only did you not apologize, but people will rightfully stop believing you and start getting pissed or hurt.
but i stay silly! *←said in the most world-weary voice you ever did hear*
“but I stay silly!”

Bigfoot and a 7 foot tall man running on all fours, a rock climbing werewolf with a superhero persona, a mage with a 200 year old French woman going full E.T on a bike, two queer business men in a golf car predator handshaking, 2 pistols each, a drunk leprechaun driving a bus, the prince, and a ghoul riding on the back of a horse.
fun fact about languages: a linguist who was studying aboriginal languages of Australia finally managed to track down a native speaker of the Mbabaram language in the 60s for his research. they talked a bit and he started by asking for the Mbabaram word for basic nouns. They went back and forth before he asked for the word for “dog” The man replied “dog” They had a bit of a “who’s on first” moment before realizing that, by complete coincidence, Mbabaram and English both have the exact same word for dog.
on a similar note, a traditional Ojibwe greeting is “Nanaboozhoo” so when the French first landed in southern Canada they thought that they were saying “Bonjour!” Which is fucking wild to think about. Imagine crossing the ocean and the first people you meet in months somehow speak French.
my favorite Accessory Fact to this is that we know more about the etymological history of the Mbabaram “dog” than the English “dog”
The etymology for Mbabaram “dog” has been reconstructed back to Proto-Pama-Nyungan, which was spoken “as recently as about 5,000 years ago”:
From *dwog(a) < *udwoga < *gudwaga < Proto-Pama-Nyungan *gudaga. Related to Dyirbal guda, Yidiny gudaga.
While the etymology for English “dog” has been reconstructed confidently only back to Olde English, which was spoken from about the 5th to the 12th centuries:
Inherited from Middle English dogge (akin to Scots dug), from Old English dogga, docga, of uncertain origin.
Tumblr is so white that you’ll have people who call themselves “anti racist” saying that being accused of racism is a death sentence
Like idk what to do anymore. Sometimes people are racist, and POC deserve actually to know if someone is racist before we give them our support!
when I tell you I had to do a double take because I thought these were 2 parts of the same whole joke
Hey baby transmascs, never detransition for a shitty straight guy no matter how attractive he is or how lonely you feel. You deserve better, you deserve to be happy. You deserve a partner who will love you truly and want you to be the most authentic version of yourself.
Also goes for nonbinary people too, you shouldn't have to hate being in your own skin just because your pre transition form makes some douchebag guy's dick hard.
