Spoilers for my thoughts on the S4 premiere of SNW under the cut:
I think part of what annoys me so much about the SNW S4 premiere is how much it's getting praised on /r/startrek. So much "This is what Star Trek is supposed to be!" They talk about how it's full of exploration and a compelling villain and just the right amount of camp. And it's like, I compare it to how much a show like Starfleet Academy is reviled for having "bad writing" and you dig a bit deeper and the bad writing is anything from "this doesn't meet my tastes" to bad faith arguments about canon to actual bigotry.
But of course SNW doesn't get that same level of scrutiny. SNW doesn't get called out for having a writing style that feels like it's written for the people who are dividing their attention between their phone and the show or having the crew disembark the shuttle with phasers drawn and then having La'an shoot at a creature she can't even see let alone know if it's sentient.
Anyway, here's a more point by point of the things that I didn't like about the episode:
They start on a cowboy planet. This is never explained. La'an does look cute in her cowgirl getup though and her flirt with Spock is admittedly, adorable.
Pike more or less Jim's the camera and says "Well you wanted to explore Strange New Worlds, now here's your chance."
The antagonist of the episode is never once questioned in her motives. Which, to be fair, she's very up front about wanting to murder her enemies, but it's the why she wants to murder her enemies that should've been questioned. She presents her war as a war of defense and while Pike does try to encourage her to talk it out, at the end of the episode he explicitly states "I would have [also committed genocide] if I were in her position." Like, you should really be questioning what her position is a bit more my guy.
Pike then goes from being complacent in two genocides and the ecological ruining of an entire planet to joking about seeing dinosaurs pretty quickly. Now, from his point of view it might've been weeks between the two events but from our point of view it was a few minutes.
The last shot of the dinosaurs was pretty cool.
Imagine accidentally becoming a deity to a primitive civilization in a massive Prime Directive clustercuss and the only way to sort of resolve it is by voluntarily getting shot with a compound bow. Happened to my good friend The Picard.

Star Trek: The Next Generation S03E04 Who Watches the Watchers
It's interesting you point out that that's a compound bow and not a traditional one. This doesn't seem to be an industrialized society. I don't remember if they specifically state their advancement but they do have metallurgy but not things like a steam engine. Compound bows provide a much stronger shot than regular bows so Picard's injury wouldn't have been as bad had he been shot with a regular bow.
Anyway, on Earth the compound bow was invented in 1966.
Tell me your worst crafting bad habit.
And I'm not talking normal stuff like being overly ambition, or lack of planning, not finishings
Tell me the stupid stuff.
I'll go first: I keep working with size 11 and size 15 seed beads in bed. And find them in my sheets when I'm trying to sleep
This is mine I think

Man I miss free the nipple. Its getting warmer and we don’t even have free the nipple anymore
feminism has backslid so hard in recent years people don't even know what free the nipple means anymore
To clarify for those who don't know, "free the nipple" isn't about going braless, it's about going topless
No shirt, no bra, completely bare torso, just like cis men are allowed to
It's about desexualizing breasts and "female presenting nipples" and not being criminalized for our bodies if we want to go topless because it's a million damn degrees out. This was a popular growing movement that was still widely known a decade ago!
And the fact that not wearing a bra is so discouraged and stigmatized that people think the movement was about being able to go braless under your shirt in public rather than about being able to not wear a shirt at all says a lot about how far we've backslid in the past decade
I mean i quite like my brain, i’m really very fond of it i just think it’s a design failure that i can’t pop it out of the ole skull basket every night and plug it in to recharge. travesty really
we share one collective braincell and that braincell desires a bath apparently
This is brainwashing propaganda
This is a literal sexual harassment training video we had to complete
i assumed this was porn
Words have no meaning. The "b" in bus stands for "bourgeois". The true vehicle of the proletariat is the SUV.
Pros of having curly hair: looks nice
Cons: i only get to fully stand under the shower stream on wash days
*producer about to make one of the worst seasons of television ever put to screen* surely writing purely in reaction to what the fans are saying on twitter will work out great for us this time
In the S4 premiere, captain Pike looks at the camera and says "You wanted to explore strange new worlds, now here's your chance!" And then the episode is bad.
we don't hate J.J. Abrams enough
Branson Reese, whoever you are, I keep your words in my heart all the time.
"branson reese, whoever you are" put some respect on the smooth sharks one fear man's name

Very fascinating type of person i have seen at least twice on tumblr is someone who wants to travel back in time and kill Jesus to stop Christianity in its tracks and therefore prevent the colonization of the Americas, Atlantic slave trade, etc. Like. I don’t think killing him is gonna stop Christianity. In fact, it famously did not.
