I am asking you to please look about for Colombia. I know there is many incredibly horrendous things going on and it is tiring to learn about another. Colombia is a country in South America, we are supposed to be the happiest country in the world but we are the #1 producer of drugs too. Most of our goverment have ties to narcotrafic, many have laboratories. Corruption cost us 50Billion annually.

Recently they announced a bill to “recover” what they spend on the pandemic (there are many irregularities about everything with the pandemic, since food prizes to toiletries, to everything in between.) but mostly they have spent in publicity to have a good name (because 73% or more does not want our president), and tools to repress the people. Tanks, guns and other implements for “anti disturbs squads” ESMAD, and improves in goverment salaries. Discounts for big companies too, ofc.

Yesterday many thousand protested against the bill, a national strike. Look at the news for it, I am asking you please. Already there are casualties, but that has been normal in the last strikes or protest.

We are being killed by our goverment and police and military. News outlets are centering the narrative around COVID and an spike (we are irreaponsable) and the vandalism (we are ALL supposedly vandals.we are not.). Everyone is afraid but out goverment scare us more. We are students, farmers, teachers, HHRR, workers, even health care. We just care for our people

We have masacres most days than not (30 in 2021, +70 in 2020.) Military bombs kids. Paramilitary and guerrillas take over towns. The rural part of our country lives in constant war because of drugs. Most rural parts have nothing but drugs and its bloody money to survive because the state DOESNT CARE.

Still they want to increase our taxes. I will tell you some:

- taxes to public services (light, water, etc. Already pricey)

- taxes to funerary costs (you are reading it right. In the middle of a pandemic)

- taxes to basic food

- increased “declaración de renta” or another tax because you gain money. It begins at 2M Colombian pesos and by 2023 at 1.6M Colombia pesos. 500 US dollars.

-1.7 M families are not eating at least 3 meals. And 90% of our covid deaths are 1 and 2 classs (estratos. The higher the more money you have. Yes, we are that classists)

-A toll INSIDE cities. And more in our roads. (We already are the country with most tolls in America. The whole America)

There is more but I am not feeling like writing it. There is many wrongs in my country. I would normally not share this, but I feel that is worst to be silent.

We are not supposed to survive our conditions, we are supposed to LIVE!!

Growing in The global south is a traumatic event itself. We did not ended our oppression with independence. We only changed the ones who loot us and called them allies and leaders. I’m tired and heartbroken, but I have it easier. We are taking back our dignity. It’s slow but I trust it will happen.

Update 30A: there are 7 confirmed deaths and 23 confirming, many many wounded and 1 sexual abuse. It’s not the first time police sexually abused girls, last strike many CAÍ (police stations) were burned because in many they had sexually assaulted women (I think 5 maybe more, they take the denouncing so I am not sure how trasparente it is).

Today first of May, we pretend to get out and protest with full force. We are tired of living in corruption, living in a dystopian reality. I hope this ends soon, if not I worry how many will die in the hands of the ones we pay to protect us.

I’ll never forget I once had to break the news to two women that their dog had cancer, and as they cried and hugged and asked me questions I said something about how I was grateful this pup had such a loving family to support her- only for these ladies to inform me one of them wasn’t actually an owner at all, she was just the other woman’s Uber driver…

So this driver tells me she’s literally never met the other lady in her life, but when this passenger started crying in the car with her dog because she was worried, this angel in the form of an Uber driver went off the clock, came inside the building, and waited over an hour in a busy emergency room with a complete stranger just so she would have someone there by her side in a scary situation. This woman even took notes about everything I said so the owner wouldn’t have to try and remember it all later.

I see plenty of stuff at my job that makes me tempted to lose my faith in humanity but all I do is remember that Uber driver and it comes roaring back to me just like that. Humans are so unbelievably good, man.

For all evolutionary history, life has struggled against calorie deficit… So much energy goes into finding food that there is no time for anything else. I nearly teared up reading “Andean agricultural technicians” bc fuck yes! these were members of Pre-Inca cultures who lived 7 to 10 thousand years ago, and they were scientists! food scientists and researchers and farmers whose names and language we can never know, who lived an inconceivably long time ago (pre-dating ancient civilizations in Egypt, China, India, Greece, and even some parts of Mesopotamia) and we are separated by millennia of time and history, but still for thousands of years the fruits vegetables of their labor and research have continued to nourish countless human lives, how is that not the most earthly form of a true miracle??? anyway yes potatoes are beautiful, salute their creators.

people seem to have trouble understanding why i’m an anti-capitalist, so i’m going to try and put it into simple, real-life terms.

i work at a restaurant. i make $12 an hour, plus tips. minimum wage where i live is relatively high for my country - the national minimum wage is $7.25/hr, and has not been raised since 2009. before taxes, working full time, my yearly income is about $22,000 a year. ($25,000 if you count tips)

at my job, we sell various dishes, with an average price of about $10-$15. we get printouts every week detailing how much money we made that week; in one week, our restaurant makes about $30,000. (one of our other locations actually makes this much on a daily basis!)

i’m not going to go into details, but after the costs of production (payroll for employees, rent for the building, maintenance, and wholesale food purchasing) are accounted for, the restaurant makes an estimated profit of $20,000 per week.

this profit goes directly to the owner, who does not work at this location. the owner of my restaurant has actually been on vacation for a few months, but still profits from the restaurant, because they own it. i have met the owner exactly twice in my year of working here.

to put this into perspective, the owner of this restaurant earns in 2 days what they pay me in one year. and that’s just from this single location - the owner has several other restaurants, all of which make more money than the one i work at. this ends up resulting in the owner having an estimated net worth of tens of millions of dollars, even after accounting for the payroll for every single worker in their employ.

now, i have to ask you: does the owner of my restaurant deserve this income? did they earn it? did their labor result in this value being created?

the naive answer would be “yes”; the owner purchased the location and arranged for the raw ingredients to be delivered, did they not?

the actual answer is “no”. the owner may have used their initial capital to start the location, but the profit is a result of my labor, and the labor of my co-workers.

the owner purchases rice at a very low bulk price of about 25 cents a pound. i cook the rice, and within a few minutes, that pound of rice is suddenly worth about $30. the owner did not create this value, i did. the owner simply provided the initial capital investment required to start the process.

what needs to be understood here is that capitalists do not create value. they use the labor of their employees to create value, and then take the excess profit and keep it.

what needs to be understood is that capitalists accrue income by already HAVING money. the owner of my restaurant was only able to get this far because they started off, from the very beginning, with enough money to purchase a building, purchase food in bulk, and hire hundreds of employees.

that is to say: the rich get richer, and they do so by exploiting the labor of the poor.

the owner of my restaurant could afford to triple the income of every single person in their employee if they felt like it, but this would mean that they were generating less profit for themselves, so they do not.

the owner of my restaurant pays me the current minimum wage of my area, because to them, i am not a person. i am an investment. i am an asset. i am a means to create more money. 

when you are paid minimum wage, the message your boss is sending you is this: “legally, if i could pay you less, i would.”

every capitalist on the planet exploits their workers for their own gain. every capitalist, even the small business owners, forces people to stay in poverty so that the capitalist can profit.

I ran an Aliens rpg years back. But the players didn't KNOW it was an Aliens game until halfway through the first session.

They thought it was a sci-fi game but they also thought the monsters were going to be zombies.

Over a period of 2 hours they then proceeded to make EVERY Aliens movie cliche "mistake" known to man. Because at the time they all made sense.

The characters in a story don't know they're in a story or what kind of story it is.
