Casual reminder of who the Tea Party was

Rational Republicans were disgusted by the Tea Party. I know three Republicans who registered as Libertarian or Independent in the next election because of how disgusted they were by the Tea Party.

Rational Democrats should be doing the same thing. We shouldn't need a Tea Party of our own, and we should fully expect people to jump ship if we start allowing assholes like Platner to represent us.

How many Russian restaurants have had to close in the past three years due to constant harassment, vandalism, and threats? Because I can think of five kosher restaurants that closed off the top of my head, and if I did some research I bet I'd find way more. How many times has someone tried to blow up a Russian daycare? Has anyone ever shot up a Russian holiday party? Raped a teenage girl for being Russian? Tried to poison their employer's family for being Russian? Been caught on tape saying they'd let their Russian patients die? I could go on and on and on but I know the answer.

the thread this was on in r/television was taken down, but all of the comments like this were equally disturbing and talking about how it’s just “drunk teenage fun” and social bonding behavior and only “zios” get offended by it.

the one empathetic, intelligent comment pushing back against that idea and saying we shouldn’t normalize this, and that it’s appropriate to apologize for a situation where hate symbols are involved, and that we should be more careful not to model this as a joke or as laudable, was downvoted to oblivion, and had nasty responses.

admittedly I don’t watch HR, and I’m not shaming Hudson Williams (it’s whoever drew that on him that made the bad choice anyway), but as the tags above say, this isn’t about him. it is, however, about how far too many people dismiss or diminish concerns about hate if that hatred is antisemitism. it is about how the Holocaust is so commodified, universalized, and even at times denied or justified, that people have no reaction to it other than an “lol boys will be boys.”

then the media pretends to wonder why these issues have gotten so bad, why extremism and white supremacy are on the rise, and why Jews are being targeted by hate crimes every day.

I don’t think the people writing comments like this wonder, though. they just don’t care.
