For artists who have problems with perspective (furniture etc.) in indoor scenes like me - there’s an online programm called roomsketcher where you can design a house/roon and snap pictures of it using different perspectives.
It’s got an almost endless range of furniture, doors, windows, stairs etc and is easy to use. In addition to that, you don’t have to install anything and if you create an account (which is free) you can save and return to your houses.
Examples (all done by me):
Here’s an example for how you can use it
Great find, thanks!
OMG HEAVEN!!
Bless you!!!!
How do you take a generic/used idea (example: kids getting powers/being in a lab etc) and turn it into something that isnt terriable and cliche?
Aha! Well, lucky for you, I specialize in making standard ideas unique and have practically all but developed a system on how to do so.
1) Character, character, character. The most unique driving force of a story in my mind is the cast of characters it contains. Sometimes, it’s nice to fit in with the genre standard, but if your plot is also fairly standard, then you may want to diversify your cast! (That isn’t directly to say race/gender/sexuality, although having a diverse cast in that aspect certainly helps.) Perhaps your character has a learning disorder, or a physical disability, or an every day condition that people don’t often address but have fairly commonly (say, diabetes or vitiligo). These traits can add greater depth to your world by appearing more unique and realistic, therefore giving your story a generally more unique feeling. (For example, I have a superhero novel led by a transgender woman who gains her powers through someone swapping her estrogen for a concoction of chemicals that gives her superpowers. The plot is standard: What happened to me? How do I control this? Who did this to me? but because her origin and character are unique, the story stands out more.)
2) Twist the tropes! If your concept is standard, you can always divert from the standard storyline! Taking your example of kids being experimented on in a lab, you can twist the standard story a variety of ways. Perhaps these kids willingly consented to these experiments. Perhaps rather than some secret institution hiding unethical work for the sake of progress or playing God, who’s doing what is made fact and no one simply cares. Perhaps the kids escape, but don’t wish to heroically save any others who shared their fate and simply want to run away and hide forever. Any of these routes will make your story stand out!
3) Come up with a unique world. Or at least, add some unique attributes to your world. Perhaps it’s almost exactly parallel to our world, but a certain food or animal has gone extinct, and it’s changed subtle details. Maybe there’s a new state department or a different national law or governing process. There’s no limit to what you can create to make things different, and this will definitely make your story stand out from similar works!

Warning to writers
While you are worrying about whether beta readers will steal your ideas, there is a more genuine threat on the horizon.
When offered a publishing contract, please do all your research before you sign. There are a number of fakes and scammers out there, as well as good-intentioned amateurs that don’t know how to get your work to a wide audience. I won’t tell the heartbreaking stories here - there are too many.
Being published badly is worse than being never published.
It can destroy your career and your dreams.
The quick check is to google the publishing house name + scam or warning.
But, to be sure, check with these places first. They aren’t infallible (nothing is) but they can help you protect yourself. They are written and maintained by expereinced writers, editors, publishers and legal folks.

Also applies to many so-called freelance sites that are just content mills, and may not pay unless your work is used, even if the contract seems designed otherwise.
Listen, reading these is like legit reading horror stories. When it comes to publishing your writing, always, always, ALWAYS do your research. Not only will it help you avoid scams, but it will also be likely to help you land a much better fit for an agent/publisher/whatever. Knowing more is never going to hurt.
Omg!!! Thanks for the warning! Writers— reblog!
I’ve heard stories like this that are scarier than horror stories. This is an all time worst nightmare for a writer. Everyone reblog and make sure you keep your work safe!
Always, ALWAYS check Writer Beware. Let me also recommend Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s blog about contracts and contract scams for authors in her section Business Musings.
Reblogging again for the links. Also check pred-ed.com and the Absolute Write forum. Then google Publisher’s name + scam and see what comes up. Do NOT use the BBB ratings, they are wholly unsuitable for rating publishers and regularly give A ratings to well-known publishing scams. You can also read my own post on publishing scams, have a link on the left of my blog ( can’t link here, I’m on mobile, sorry).

SUPER IMPORTANT PSA!
Equally important to know is that you can SELF-PUBLISH through a number of platforms these days. @ean-amhran and I used Amazon’s CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing to publish both of our books. No editors, no contracts, no finagling with publishers who want to change your materials. Just direct-to-market material.
(Granted, it means you’ve got to do a LOT more work yourself with editing and formatting and cover art, but it’s worth it to miss the headache of trying to bargain with publishing houses or avoid scams.)
Be vigilant, fellow writers!
If you choose to self publish then HAVE A PLAN and think things through.
And hire an editor. Please, for the love of all that is holy, hire an editor. It’s expensive, but you will get a better book out, a better reputation…
If you’re going to publish electronically, make sure you also get someone who can LAY AN EBOOK OUT PROPERLY.
I have spent money on Kindle books, many of them reprints of older works, whose formatting is so messed up as to render them unreadable.
I actually recommend using the Smashwords Style Guide even if you don’t use Smashwords.
It lays out how to neatly format an e-book in a wonderful step by step format, and you can get it free from Smashwords. Just leave off the couple of things that are (very obviously) Smashwords specific.
If you can’t stand dealing with the meticulous detail, then by all means hire somebody, but most people can learn to format an ebook correctly and once you’ve done it a couple of times it takes about an hour tops.

Because the redirects aren’t working for me, I’m going to assume others might have trouble with these links, so for those who need it the URL for the website to Writer Beware is: www.sfwa.org/other-resources/for-authors/writer-beware/ As stated on here: “Writer Beware is sponsored by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, with additional support from the Mystery Writers of America, the Horror Writers Association, and the American Society of Journalists and Authors.” These are not publishers’ guilds, notice; you sometimes see scammers trying to defend themselves against Writer Beware exposes by claiming that they’re “small press” or “indie” and Big Publishing is somehow out to get them - but all of those guilds are run by and for writers, to help support them and represent them in the field. It is the closest writers have to having unions, and there’s no direct competition between them (you could literally be an in any of those guilds are the same time as each other, in addition to others, and I believe a number of authors are).
Writer Beware is a wonderful resource, and I highly recommend it. It’s both a good general guide to the scams people run/red flags to watch out for (such as giving up your copyright entirely as opposed to specific rights, or being charged to publish something or have it edited, when they’re trying to act like they’re a “normal” publisher), and a frequently-updated list of the latest specific known scammers, both in “fake agents” and fake/scammy publishers categories. (The company formerly known as Publish America is one of the most famous and egregious cases, but by far not the only one)
Additionally, for SF and fantasy writers, the SFWA’s own list of qualifying markets that one can be published in as a prerequisite to be able to get into their guild (remember, it IS a profession-based guild), is a great guide to normal markets for those genres that have standard contracts that aren’t abusive or scammy, and their guidelines include some of the industry-standard minimums for “per word” etc rates, so even if some new magazine market isn’t on their list, you can tell if it’s suspiciously far outside the usual per-word or whatnot standards. (It’s likely the guidelines for Mystery Writers of America etc also would be useful in that vein) Even if you’re unpublished or don’t want to join their guild, they’re a wonderful group and resource, and I highly recommend their site and Writer Beware in particular! The other sites mentioned above, such as “Preditors and Editors” should be still valid if you Google them, and are often rec’d by Writer Beware, but Writer Beware is the one I’m most familiar with. :)

Just make sure you have solid evidence from a reputable site with outside sources, same as any type of fact-checking (Writer Beware is legit and would be my go-to source).

Shorthand Google Reference Guide
I’m gonna type this up while it’s fresh on my mind because some of y’all don’t know how to use Google
SO YOU WANT TO DRAW A woman sitting in the grass.
IF YOU SEARCH: female sitting
Very vogue. Very male gaze. Good for fashion or model pictures, not very good if you’re wanting to draw a natural looking pose on a woman who isn’t a model and whose camera certainly didn’t fucking turn on by itself.
IF YOU SEARCH: female sitting pose
Arguably worse, depending on the use. My experience with “female + pose” searches is that you get a lot of IMVU and The Sims pose sets, and artists making sketch compiliations that… don’t always have great anatomy and are frequently just more stiff model poses. I do use similar searches for pinup sketches, ie, “female sassy pinup pose,” though “posing for pinup photography” and “how to pose for” will give different results if you aren’t finding what you need.
IF YOU SEARCH: woman student relaxing sitting on grass crossed legs
Closer. Still kind of staged looking. Maybe we don’t want her studying. Maybe we just want her relaxing. Still, you start to see how specific keyword searches will really get you results.
IF YOU SEARCH: woman sitting under tree grass relaxing nature summer
Nice. This is only a small handful of the results, but most of them more or less fit my mental image. Mostly stock images, but good for gesture sketches or figuring out a pose. Still… we could go further, and I think I will.
IF YOU SEARCH: woman sitting under tree grass relaxing nature summer senior photography
Jackpot. Senior pictures aren’t always awkward kids in braces. Look at how much more natural a few of these look? Compare that to the “Female sitting” search. Google Search tip #1 is basically “use more and specific keywords.” But just… one more thing I just… can’t get off my mind… what if I… just…
IF YOU SEARCH: black woman sitting under tree grass relaxing nature summer senior photography
Uh oh. So let me level with you, if you just google “dreadlocks,” expect a lot of white people. I spent over 30 minutes adding keywords to this search, and every page was still white people. Breaking it back down to “black woman sitting on grass” helped but gave me all the boring pose issues of the female sitting search. So basically, Google Search tip #2 is: Google image search is as White as the rest of the damn world. How do we find what we’re looking for now, then?
IF YOU SEARCH: black woman sitting in grass nature tumblr blackout
Beautiful, natural poses. Adding “photography” whitewashed it. Adding “summer” gave me bikini pinups. Searching for POC models using Google image search is infinitely more frustrating than finding a million thin white women, and you’re usually going to be better off supporting POC modeling blogs themselves than fighting with Google all day. Using “tumblr” and “instagram” as keywords may also get you a lot more natural, less Vogue Was Here hits. Pinterest too, on occasion.
But keep in mind that these are real people–especially using tags like “tumblr” or “blackout.” There’s a difference between referencing a pose or drawing different face shapes, and outright copying someone’s exact likeness without their permission. Maybe also consider liking/reblogging/following them if they’re a model or photographer. Use some common sense. You don’t own images found on google yadda yadda don’t be a dick.
Have fun being better at search engines and learning how to draw stuff!

20 ways to draw a more consistent character
TAKEN FROM HERE: https://sites.google.com/site/houseotwisted/junk/20drawings
1. Draw the most common appearance for your character. This is your comfort zone. (Color)
2. Draw your character from the front, the side, and the back. This is something called a ‘turn sheet’. It’s a little boring to do, but will be very helpful to you in the future to have on hand.
3. Draw your character from the front, the side, and the back, but have them in nothing but their undies at most. This is to show off how your character is built. Drawing nothing but a straight pant-leg with no structure under it is no way to learn! (Skip this if your character doesn’t wear clothes)
4. Draw your character at three different ages than they currently are. (Must be noticeably different. No ages: 4, 5, and 6, etc.) Color one of them.
5. BANG! Your character just heard a loud noise right behind them. Draw their reaction!
6. Draw a bird’s eye view of your character.
7. Draw your character feeling very happy. Show body language.
8. Draw your character feeling very angry. Ditto.
9. Draw your character feeling very sad. You know the drill.
10. Draw your character with a different body type than they usually have. This helps you map distinguishing features onto different ‘templates’.
11. Draw your character if they were the opposite gender.
12. Draw your character as a different species than they normally are.
13. Somebody has just handed your character a live duck. Draw their reaction. Keep them in character.
14. Mary Sue the HELL out of your character. (Due to being asked “What is Mary Sue?” several times, I have included a link to the evil that is Sue: [Click if you dare.]
15. Draw your character lifting something heavy. (no magic allowed!)
16. Draw your character in an opposite role than they appear in your story/continuity.
17. Draw your character doing something they enjoy.
18. Draw your character doing something they do NOT enjoy.
19. Draw your character in a dynamic pose that is not a profile shot (from the side).
20. Draw the most common appearance for your character. Color it. (Pssst! See if it improved from the first one you drew. I bet it did!)
Ragehappy - Fandom Appreciation Days Post
What is this list? Just a little bit of a disclaimer. This isn’t just a rec list, but it’s a list specifically for Fandom Appreciation. Either, I feel that the story or author made me appreciate the fandom more - or appreciate a specific part of the fandom that I hadn’t before- or I believe they deserve more appreciation. There are obviously tons of amazing stories in this fandom, so if I left anything off I’m not trying to slight it or say it’s not good. I’ve also, more than likely, just forgotten about it. I also tried to pick one or two fics from each author to keep the list manageable (otherwise, this list would just be Jos’ works list).
Enjoy!
Smut
By your hand is the only end that I see by callmearcturus. Freewood.
Minecraft AU. Ryan decides to teach Gavin a thing or two about fealty. One of my favorite smut fics in this entire fandom to be honest. Have probably read it a thousand times. Best described in their own tags as “dirtybadwrong to the extreme.”
Tonight!verse by quackingfish. OT6.
AH OT6 AU- Gavin and Michael make a stupid bet, it’s only slightly Geoff’s fault, and oh yeah, the bet totally revolves around sex. The OT6 porn story, as far as I’m concerned. This is the second OT6 fic I read, and I would recommend it highly.
Double-Up by achievemenhunter. Freewood.
The Gavins decide that Ryan is being a right tease by wearing that suit-and-kilt combo, and drag him into a supply closet to ravish him. It’s hard to pick just one achievemenhunter story, which is why I won’t be doing that I’ll probably have several, but this is definitely one of my favorites. Right after TLR, everyone on Tumblr was going insane, frothing at the mouth for any TLR free wood we could get and achievementhunter absolutely delivered.
Lessons In How Not To Be An Utter Douchebag by achievemenhunter. Freewood.
The Fake AH Crew’s latest recruit, Gavin, is a talented and invaluable new asset, to be sure, but that doesn’t make his sense of superiority any less unbearable. If anything, it just makes it worse, and Ryan is under the firm impression that no amount of skill with computers should warrant that level of smugness in a person. Even if that person also happens to be frustratingly attractive.Scratch that, especially if they also happen to be frustratingly attractive.Geoff asks Ryan to scare the kid into showing a little more humility, and he gladly complies.…His methods end up being something that Geoff probably didn’t have in mind. Some of the best freewood porn out there. WIP, but who cares. Go check it out.
Show Off by KuroKitten. Freewood
Gavin liked to show off, and sometimes, Ryan was ok with that. If it meant he was showing off that he belonged to Ryan… Just solid Freewood porn that’s not only hot but does a great job of showing the potential chemistry between the two of them. Definitely a freewood classic to me, but I rarely see it in rec lists.
Watching Him by taffetaDirigible. Mavin.
Gavin is a webcam model for an adult website. Michael is looking for something new to jerk off to. Classic Mavin story. Just solid porn, and one of the best Gavin/Dan stories as far as I’m concerned.
Hard Stop by horrificsmut. Micheoff.
Narcotics-cop-turned-bodyguard Michael Jones finds himself assigned to protect Geoff Ramsey, a senator’s son and mayoral hopeful. Ramsey’s advisor and campaign manager, Ryan Haywood, has no love for Jones. But Haywood knows the young cop–and his unwavering, inexplicable dedication to Ramsey–will be useful. Especially since Ramsey likes booze too much, likes sex too much, and isn’t into waiting for a decorous time to engage in either one. Despite Haywood’s warnings, the assignment borders on boring for Jones. But it only takes three months for Ramsey to figure out how to get them both into trouble. I know for Kelly, you would think I would recommend The Aftermath, being the penultimate Micheoff fic, but I think this one always was my favorite of her’s. Something about Mayor!Geoff in a suit, hiding his tattoos, idk. Read this, and then read all the rest of Kelly’s fics. Even if it’s for the umpteenth time like it is for me. Then go buy her actual books because they’re fucking amazing.
And I Ran Where They Told Me Not To Run by Micheoff. Micheoff.
Michael calls the wrong number in a lust filled haze and Geoff picks up. An excerpt: ‘I, uh… just wanted to talk,’ Michael offers, not knowing where he’s going with this. He should hang up. He should tell his boss he called the wrong number on accident. It was a butt-dial. His phone sometimes makes random calls and he really needs to get it fixed. Alien signals interfered with his phone and called him. Something. Anything but this. Just amazingly hot. My other favorite Micheoff fic. Have read 10 billion times.
Half doomed and semi sweet by chailattemusings. Freewood.
Gavin has spent the last month and a half on the streets, after being tossed out by the only owner he ever knew. As a homeless robot, he wanders, looking for shelter, while avoiding any humans that might decide he belongs in the trash heaps. His trials are ended when he stumbles upon one of the only repair shops in town that works on robots and the young mechanic named Ryan Haywood who happens to be there. Probably my favorite freewood AU, that’s not one of the video game AU’s. If you haven’t read it, you are definitely missing out.
jizz it up by tinypi. Freewood.
When a heist takes them to a nightclub, Gavin and Ryan bust a move before busting the bad guy’s face. Another solid, smutty, FAHC freewood story. I think my favorite thing about this story, however, is how Gavin and Ryan’s personality are so seamlessly blended with their FAHC personalities and their normal real-world ones. Their characters are a good mix of both in here, and I really like it.
Play the Game by ryanthepowerbottomguy. Ramwood.
Ryan would never have expected that pickpocketing Geoff Ramsey’s wallet would lead to him making out with one of the most dangerous men in Los Santos at three in the morning, but here he was. Definitely the penultimate Ramwood story to me. This was probably the first story that made me realize how much I needed ramwood in my life.
Calibrating by Kaiserteeth. Freewood.
Ryan is a programmer who has a few upgrades he’d like to try out on Gavin, the ladbot. Just some solid, fantastic, robot!Gavin smut.
Ten Steps to Planning a Successful Wedding (and How to Ignore Every Single One of Them) by anarchetypal. Micheoff.
Over the years, Geoff’s learned the best tricks of the trade for planning a wedding.Falling for the groom, though—that’s probably not one of them. I’m just worried that there are people who have not got to read this fic. If not, do yourself a favor.
Bet On It by PAPERSK1N. Mavin.
A single dumb bet revolving around one, arguably harmless comment.“Gavin, you’re not fucking seductive” This list needs more Mavin. One of the good ones. Pure smut. Check out the rest of Paperskin’s stuff as well, (especially The Girlfriend Experience)!
The Mad Hatter’s Crew by GamerAlexis. OT6
Ray Narvaez Jr. and Ryan Haywood had taken over Los Santos. There wasn’t a gang or mob who could stand up to these two insane criminals. They took what they wanted at their leisure and destroyed anyone in their way. Rumors spread like wildfire about Brownman and the Vagabond and their twisted relationship. No one dared to mess with them. Except for one crazy son of a bitch. Geoff Ramsey. Psychoteeth. Raywood that turns into OT6. I’m not a huge Raywood, or psychoteeth fan, which is why this one has to be added to the list because I really did enjoy it. It’s fucked up to the extreme, and hot as hell, and if you’re into that I would recommend it.
Notsmut
Chatterbox by rage-quitter. Freewood
Gavin’s going to get himself killed, but then again, maybe the Vagabond doesn’t mind his ridiculousness. I have such an obsession with FAHC Ryan and Gavin and this little fic is just my exact head cannon of what would happen when Ryan joined the crew. Go read!
Great Sealand Takeover by whalehuntingboyfriends. OT6
When the mysterious and very dangerous ‘Edgar’ starts moving in on Geoff’s territory, he’s not amused. He is even less amused when Edgar targets his boyfriend, Jack - forcing him to team up with mercenaries Michael and Ray to stop him. Things do not go as planned and suddenly they’re all stuck together, on the run and working to bring him down - along with Ryan, the ‘mad mercenary’ who holds a grudge against Edgar, and Gavin, a data analyst with his own secrets. And of course, because things aren’t already complicated as hell, they just have to start falling for each other. (slow build AH-OT6, criminal/GTA AU) It’s hard to pick a certain Jos fic because all of her stories should be published novels imo, but GST will just always hold such a spot in my heart. It was the first OT6 fic that I genuinely enjoyed with every part of me, and I can’t recommend it enough. If you’ve somehow been in the ragehappy fandom for any amount of time and haven’t read GST, or every single one of Jos’s amazing fics, you need to call in sick to work, stock up on the essentials and have a lovely day of reading ahead of you.
The Visit by whalehuntingboyfriends. Freewood.
There are rumours aplenty about the Mad King. That he is a tyrant, a sorcerer, that he possesses strange and dark magic - so when he comes to visit Geoff’s court, everyone is prepared for the worst. But Ryan is not what he seems, and the last person anyone would have expected to find out the truth is the King’s fool.(Prompt: 5 times Ryan surprised Gavin and 1 time Gavin surprised him.) It is extremely difficult to pick out just a couple of Jos’ fics to recommend. I narrowed it down to one OT6 and one freewood, and when it comes to Freewood I have to choose this one. I love, love, love King AU’s, and obviously, Jos is the Queen of those, but this one is just a staple in my head of that headcanon. Where the Lost Go expands on this, I think, and her Gavin/Ryan interactions in that are perfection (And the angst will rip your heart into two). But this story was one of the first ones that fleshed out King!Ryan and Jester!Gavin so perfectly to how I imagined them.
picking your battles: an unauthorized Los Santos survival guide by anarchetypal. Raywood.
Ray moves further into the kitchen and points the gun directly at Ryan’s chest. “Who are you? Not a crackhead. Not some guy looking to get his rocks off at a club. You took my gun, let me walk off like Prince Happy Unaware to get the shit beat out of me, and now you’re making, what, chocolate chip waffles, are you serious—who the fuck does that?” Ryan sets the bowl down and lifts his hands, palms up, still not looking particularly concerned. “I got hired to find some stupid kid who stole nearly fifty thousand dollars’ worth of coke off a kingpin,” he says, offhand, and Ray’s stomach flips. I’m not a huge Raywood fan, but honestly, if you haven’t read this I need you to drop everything you are doing right now and read it.
Michael had a Little Ram by MissGillette. Micheoff.
After trading punches with a werewolf classmate at his high school graduation ceremony, Michael is shipped off to his uncle’s animal sanctuary in Sewanee, Tennessee. Cursed and unwanted animals live out their natural lives on the farm in dignity and relative calm. Naturally, Michael butts heads with a peculiar ram, whose fleece is black as coal. Some fun Micheoff. I always enjoy supernatural AU’s in any fandom, and this one’s just adorable.
A Medley of Poor Choices by PerpetualMisperception. OT6
It had been a very, very long time since Michael had been this close to someone who wasn’t trying to stab him. One of my favorite WIP’s out there. I always cheer when I see there is an update. It’s so wonderful following along with Micheal’s self-destructive tendencies and seeing the patience and love coming from the rest of the guys in their own distinct ways.
Go Classy Into That Good Night by Banach_Tarski. OT6
“Alright, you idiots,” Geoff told the lot of them, climbing off his ass. “No more killing each other. Especially you, Vagabond. You’re on a murder break.” Ryan looked sheepish, as much as one could wearing a blood-splattered skull mask. Two rival gangs, the Gents, and the Lads, end up hunting for the same target- a mysterious device in the depths of Fort Zancudo. The crews will need to work together if they ever want to leave alive because breaking out of Zancudo is a lot more difficult than breaking in. If they fail, which they do, repeatedly, the device sends them back to the depths. Can the crews trust each other enough to escape? Jack almost laughed aloud. Like that was ever going to fucking happen. If you have not read this, and you enjoy OT6 even a tiny bit, go read it right the fuck now. There’s angst, and romance, and drama, and intrigue. The plot is so unique and fun, and everybody is just so natural.
Something Different by thatmavin. Freewood.
All of his life, Ryan has wanted something different. But, his life changed when ‘something different’ wanted him. Pretty much a staple of classic Freewood. WIP, likely not never be finished, but if you’ve not you should definitely give it a chance. Gavin and Ryan are just so fantastic in this story, you’re really missing out by not reading it.
RVB
Above Ground by YIN. Grimmons/Tuckington
Dexter Grif really only ever wanted to keep himself and his sister out of trouble, and maybe get a few naps in while he was at it. But chance encounters end up putting him in the thick of a battle to save his home….Figures. I know this is a Ragehappy rec post but I just wanted to throw this baby in here real quick. It’s a 470k word RVB!AU and it may be one of the greatest fics I’ve ever read so I think everybody should know about it. Some days I think about printing it off just so I can read it over and over again whenever I want, but it would be like three books and that’s a lot of work. I might do it anyway.
a random soulmate au idea i had, where a person has a mark/tattoo on their arm to represent their soulmate and it spreads as they grow up to incorporate different things that represent the person or have some significance to them and eventually you have a full sleeve tattoo and it’s neato.
(and just think of the potential shenanigans from people trying to interpret their tattoos. like “goddammit is this dog supposed to represent loyalty or do they just really fuckin love dogs??”)
Do you have any recommendations for books on how to be a better writer and/or how to go about getting published? Or any advice in either. Thanks you're the best!
Before you get into books, read and listen to Ira Glass talk about The Taste Gap. You’ll come back to this many times over the next few months and probably years.
Books:
Stephen King’s ON WRITING is incredibly valuable, and each time I read it, I learn something new because I’ve grown as a writer, and unlocked new perception abilities.
Save the Cat, by Blake Shelton, is very good, too. I don’t agree with all of it, and its primary focus is on screenwriting, but the fundamentals of pacing and working from a logline and basic story type are really useful.
The Anatomy of Story, by John Truby, is also very insightful and helpful. I love that it uses movies you’ve already seen and know to help explain the mechanics behind building them, so you can use the same mechanics in your original work.
As far as getting published goes, don’t worry about that until you feel confident and mature as a writer. Put your effort and XP into developing your voice, your discipline and commitment to doing the work, and rewriting the first draft. Once you’ve gotten all of that into your build, you can go ahead and start looking for publishing.
I hope this helps get you started. If there was one thing that I could make you listen to and internalize, though, just one single thing that you would be compelled to do, it is this: Write every day, and keep it simple.

Here it is!
Others that randomly occur to me:
