Cover is UP! The stunning art is by @eliotbaum.
Call Me Traitor is the story of a living weapon fighting her way towards personhood and the awful lesbian she's doing it with. I keep calling it 'the sapphic Winter Soldier wizards' book despite being told we can't put that in the blurb.
STORY:
So this is the book I have spent the last few years on! I think it's the best thing I've written. I am both nervous and hugely excited. Reblogs massively appreciated if that is your thing, and if you are inclined to preorder, they do help me out a lot with my publisher, but I completely understand that not everyone is in a position to. All interest treasured and appreciated!
(Also: HOW gorgeous is this art! I am unspeakably in love with it! How it captures these two idiots so accurately, and the incredible dawn clouds and the mountain and the sea. I pushed for Eliot Baum for the cover ever since he was among the initial artist suggestions because of the gorgeous way he does characters, and this both showed me that was the right choice and also completely blew me away. Highly recommend the follow: @eliotbaum. I am also a big fan of the title design, which is by Jess Kiley!)
Stopping point if you find yourself on your phone doomscrolling, procrastinating, or “stuck”
You can move to scroll in another space (if you haven’t gotten out of bed yet, move to the couch; if you haven’t left the house yet, you can sit outside)
You can make your current space more pleasant to scroll in (if it’s not possible to move spaces, open a window or light a candle in your space)
You can scroll while taking care of your body (change into clean clothes, scroll while brushing your teeth or washing your face, scroll while drinking water or having a snack)
You can stay on social media but avoid depressing or mindless content (try searching for fun facts, hobbies you’re interested in, or good news)
Hard mode: try just making the switch on your phone from short-form to long-form content (from dozens of short posts to an article, a fanfic, or an ebook; from TikToks/Reels/Shorts to a interesting or fun YouTube video, podcast, audiobook, or film) — this can be the first step in transitioning out of being “stuck,” because you can, for example, go on a walk while listening to an audiobook, fold clothes while watching a video, etc.
Expert mode: Set a timer for one minute and put down your phone. Do anything else. (Take deep breaths, go get a drink, pick up a book or craft.) If you can do this, aspire to two or five minutes and keep increasing your time away from scrolling. (Use your phone to play music, a podcast, or an audiobook if this prevents you from picking it up again)
Good luck! I hope you were able to make your scrolling a touch more cheerful today!
Any sci-fi media: the spaceship is a character
Me: OMG THE SPACESHIP IS A CHARACTER
Human Is is a 1955 Philip K. Dick sci-fi short story where a guy goes to another planet for work and when he comes back to Earth his personality has flipped from an asshole to a sweet, kind, considerate man. Everyone's immediately convinced that an alien has taken over his body, this goes all the way to court, and in court his wife testifies that she's noticed no changes at all and so the charges are dropped.
And then there's a bit right at the end of the story as the wife and the husband are walking out of court:
Jill turned abruptly. "What is your name? Your real name."
The man's gray eyes flickered. He smiled a little, kind, gentle smile. "I'm afraid you would not be able to pronounce it. The sounds cannot be formed..."
Jill was silent as they walked along, deep in thought. The city lights were coming on all around them. Bright yellow spots in the gloom. "What are you thinking?" the man asked.
"I was thinking perhaps I will still call you Lester," Jill said. "If you don't mind."
"I don't mind," the man said. He put his arm around her, drawing her close to him. He gazed down tenderly as they walked through the thickening darkness, between the yellow candles of light that marked the way. "Anything you wish. Whatever will make you happy."
And I. God. There's something there. A soupcon of monsterfuckery. To tell your partner in a moment of intimacy that yes, you're something so inhuman that the lips you're stealing can't speak your actual name. You're a parasite that not only had the ability to burrow under this man's skin and take over his life, but you were so desperate to escape a dead, dry, blasted planet that you did.
And for your partner to then turn around and go "I know, I've always known, and I love you" is just. God I know it's not a great Dick story but something about it is making me lose my mind
"Why do you buy books when the library is right there?"
Because publishing houses will not continue printing paper books if libraries are their only customers.
Also, I like being able to read at my leisure and generally have books at hand.
#public libraries are good because they let people access books they might never otherwise read#private book ownership is good because it's Yours#physical books are good because they last a long time and again it's Yours#ebooks are good because you can fit a whole library into the physical space of a single book and they're cheaper to produce#audiobooks are good because they're accessible to people with eyesight or visual reading issues and leave your hands free#in conclusion: all books are good and people should enjoy them however and whenever they can#(lest it be misunderstood I agree with you completely OP I just also really like books in general and it got away from me)
YES. all books. every kind
Tump dies tonight while giving his speech in the hot hot sun. Like to charge, reblog to cast
This might be a bit out of left field, but do you have any Moshang fic recs? I’m in love with basically every comic or picture of them you draw and I want to know if you have/know any of the good stuff.
They’re actually surprisingly hard to find.
Yeah I have a bunch! Good taste is subjective but I hope you'll find something from this pile that you like.
Lets get the obvious one out of the way! Which includes literally anything by Tossawary! Their Pride Is Not The World I'm Looking For has been the one thing that's influenced my read on Shang Qinghua (I like this author so much that I got into bookbinding because I NEED to have physical copies for myself ahjahagahjgd). If you like my version of sqh, well... this is where that version came from mostly.
Avoiding Execution and Other Romantic Lies by MysteryTeacup Words: 62,143 Mobei-Jun blurts out that him and Shang Qinhua are lovers and now the An Ding peak lord has to construct a whole fake dating history for them. It's been a while since I read this so I wish I could give an actual review.... But this is in my bookmarks for a reason.
Cold Hands, Warm Heart by Zizzani Words: 16,274 Mobei-Jun learns about frostbite! Very cool! Not so cool for Shang Qinghua who has to explain what the stages of frostbite are while its happening to him... Has a schrodingers cat joke that was very memorable. If you like sappy and dramatic shit this one is for you.
common fellows by tagteamme Words: 4,254 Shang Qinghua finds out that someone is writing porn of him and his king. But the problem is... he doesn't know the author! Who the hell is writing this shit?!?!? What if Mobei-Jun finds out!!! I put a note on this that said "So funny i actually was fighting for my life" so that pretty much sums it up hahahahaha
drunk and disorderly by sarahyyy Words: 5,105 Shang Qinghua has a one night stand with his new boss, Mobei-Jun, and goes as horribly as one would expect. Comedy ensues. I am not a big proponent of Modern AU for svsss, but I did enjoy this one for its writing. I put it down as funny in my notes and I did bookmark it so I do recommend it.
bereft, bestowed by sixthmoon (seventhstar) Words: 3,245 A short one! Mobei-Jun is not interested in his suitors so Shang Qinghua proposes he set up a task for anyone who wishes for his hand in marriage. Very cute and fun.
Just Like The Dark by therealandraste Words: 6,812 Shang Qinghua has decided that his romantic feelings toward his king will never be returned, so might as well learn to accept that... But is that really the truth of things? I noted that "I liked how prickly shq was in this", so you can expect characterization that I absolutely vibe with.
(Still) Here by KotoneChou Words: 7,108 I noted that this had a really good fight scene. I like fight scenes. Moshang is there too but..... fight scenes and drama.....
Foretold by the gods by Asuka Kureru (Askerian) Words: 1,879 Most of this is Airplane freaking the fuck out and Mobei-jun going "we are married now". Absolutely delightful writing. God this is funny...
Joie de Vivre by ino Words: 13,051 Mobei-Jun's and Shang Qinghua's first meeting goes a bit differently... I don't have any notes on this and thus lament being unable to give a proper review. However, I trust past me that there is a reason I bookmarked this. This fic has my favorite tag however, which is "competent Shang Qinghua".
An Ding Master's Introduction to the Design of Sacred Places by Seiraheron Words: 132,695 INCOMPLETE Want something bigger to chew on? Well, heres an incomplete fic! Which is still very long but if you dont like cliffhangers that will probably never get resolved maybe skip out on this one. The only note i have for this is "Yes. Good." which... sounds promising...
You really dont? by Reisei Words: 5,040 Left a note "Good shq characterization. Lighting an incense stick for him". I think that tells you all you need to know!
so you have a bad day by tagteamme Words: 30,999 Shang Qinghua has a bad day and when he goes out on a much needed vacation he gets kidnapped! I just... oh this is incredibly funny. I've re-read this a few times actually! The ending is incredibly satisfying!
Welcome to the second part of this post!!! These are fics that are a bit harder to recommend because theyre more extreme. READ THE TAGS FOR THESE ONES.
Twighlight sleep, waking nightmares by droogproxy Words: 6,111 Mobei-Jun gets tortured by Huan Hua's deciples. I left a note that read "probably the most explicit shit without any actual porn". This is a great read and actually very funny and cute despite the setup.
Welcome to my mad delusion by EllsKay Words: 26,697 HARDCORE. SO FUCKING HARDCORE. Shang Qinghua gets posessed and goes mad. It is a delightful read for those who like getting their brain scrambled.
Thats all for now! It was fun going through my bookmarks and reminicing on fics I've read. If you wanna pick my brain and see what I like about moshang, read all of these. I sure as hell am gonna reread a bunch of these now. Thank you for the ask!

#know your fandom history
so we're doing "You can't draw Ancient Greek Mythological figures as Black, that's inauthentic and disrespectful of real Greeks" arguments again.
First, that's patently racist (see the long history of European powers interpreting and re-interpreting Greek mythology to support the idea of a White Western Civilization where they trace their own spiritual/philosophical lineage back to the Greeks - why is that given a pass but tumblr artists drawing Patroclus as Black in their ship art is not?) and second, deeply weird to assume that Bronze Age and Classical Greeks had never interacted with an African before (the Ancient Greeks.... knew about Africa. It's right there. Egypt was the HEIGHT of awesome civilized coolness in the Bronze Age, Bronze Age Mycenaeans thought Egyptians were the coolest)
There are also points to be made that Greek mythology so often gets divorced from Greek culture and its own history in service of claiming it for a genericized western European/American culture. And that's worth considering too.
But it's wrong to act like those are somehow opposed concepts. Drawing Greek mythic characters as Black is not inherently disrespectful or inaccurate or un-Greek. Especially because the Ancient Greeks themselves saw no contradiction between "being African" and "being Greek," at least in their mythic imaginations.
Some of the most important Greek Mythic Genealogy goes thus:
Poseidon had a son with Libya, the personification figure of… well… Libya. To the ancient Greeks, Libya was basically all of Africa west of Egypt, and Aethiopia was the part of Africa south of Egypt. Poseidon and Libya's son was Belus, ruler of Egypt. Belus married Achiroë, daughter of Nilus, the god-personification of the Nile River.
Belus and Achiroë had (at least) two sons, Aegyptos who ruled Egypt and Arabia, and Danaus, who ruled Libya.
Danaus had fifty daughters with several different women: Polyxo, a Nile River Naiad; Memphis, the personification-goddess of the Egyptian city Memphis; Europa, also said to be a daughter of Nilus; one or two dryad nymphs; and various other women, one of whom was specifically named as Aethiopian.
Aegyptos meanwhile had fifty sons, and wanted his sons to marry Danaus's fifty daughters. Danaus, fearing a prophecy that his son-in-law would kill him, decided to flee with all of his daughters to Argos, where they made him king (because he was descended from Io and Zeus four generations back).
Anyway then the plot of The Suppliants happens, all the daughters of Danaus kill their husbands except Hypermnestra, and Danaus's daughter Hypermnestra and her husband Aegyptos's son Lynceus founded the Argive royal dynasty. (Lynceus's mother is either another daughter of Nilus, Aegyptos's Phoenecian cousin, or a princess of unknown ancestry.)
They were the great-grandparents of Perseus, who married the Aethiopian princess Andromeda, who were then the great-grandparents of Heracles.
This is why in the Iliad, the Greeks are called Danaans: descendants of Danaus. That's right, all the Greek mythic heroes in the Iliad traced their spiritual and cultural descent from an African! (Two Africans: Hypermnestra and Lynceus, even.)
I'm not a scholar of Classical Greece. But I've done some study of the Bronze Age Aegean, when these mythic stories of the Trojan War and such were set, and it was an extremely interconnected place. Egypt was trading with and/or conquering Kush (in Southern Egypt and Sudan); Crete and Greece and Turkiye and Syria and Egypt (or rather, the Minoans and the Mycenaeans and the Hittites and the Canaanites/Lebanese/Syrians and the Egyptians. also the Assyrians and Babylonians) were trading, communicating, and possibly intermarrying with each other. These were not ethnically separated nation-states, they were all part of the Mediterranean World later mythologized in Classical Greek views of the ancient age of heroes. This mythological lineage reflects that understanding.
You can draw the Greek mythic figures as Black and African and still also Greek. There's no inherent contradiction. Point to their Danaan Argive history of Danaus and Aegyptus. They wouldn't mind.
Lovely to see we have spaces where you can gain access to so much literature!

everyone quit reblogging with "investing" and "making this blow up". that only happens to blogs that are already big. my posts sit squarely at 2 notes apiece and so it shall remain
can you reblog a two-part post in the correct order?
you! tumblr user!
every time i listen to “you’re a mean one mr. grinch” i can’t help but sit there and think “what did the grinch do to hurt you?” because dude just stands there for 2 minutes and 58 seconds and drags the grinch into the dirt
he stole christmas, kayla! stop with your #notallgrinches propaganda!
you know what if someone told me i was a three-decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce i’d probably be bitter enough to steal christmas too
Interestingly, though The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is narrated by Boris Karloff, the big musical number is sung by the late Thurl Ravenscroft - an American voice actor better known as the voice of Tony the Tiger.
My headcanon is that the Grinch and Tony the Tiger had a bad breakup, and “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” is the resulting breakup song.
Did this really HAVE to be the first thing I see when I opened up Tumblr?
Yes.
oh god theres art
@altadude you know what must be done.
ive been avoiding reblogging this honestly but just. What the fuck. What the fuck tumblr
I apologize to all my followers for this
if i had to read this you do too
I have a hate-hate relationship with this
Good grief… I’m sorry, but I can’t not reblog this…
Tis the season bitches
DAMN IT WHY WOULD YOU BRING THIS BACK YOU HEATHEN
Why is this on my dash?
…..I’m.. Bothered? by the fact that I’m not bothered by this.
You’re not bothered?? I’m not only not bothered, I’m freaking invested. I’m having actual empathetic sadness for The Grinch. I want them to go into couple’s counseling. I want the “ten years later” when Tony visits Whoville on business and meets the reformed Grinch whose heart has grown 3 times its usual size. I want them to reminisce over a shared dinner of roast beast and wine, then spend a drunken night together, then realize that maybe things are different and people really do change. I want a 3-act story where there’s a long dark night of soul searching and the realization that maybe we’ve all got a little bit of bad banana with greasy black peel inside us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make a damned fine banana bread if someone will give us a chance.
“maybe we’ve all got a little bit of bad banana with greasy black peel inside us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make a damned fine banana bread if someone will give us a chance” is an incredibly profound quote and I did NOT expect to get it from a Grinch x Tony the Tiger post
every fucking year i have to see this on my dash please just let me fucking r e s t
It’s that time again.
